I've noticed since El Capitan update (maybe even Yosemite) that OS X will pop up a dialog box about my external hard drive not being properly ejected (screenshot).
However, when I go to Finder it's still there.
Not a MAJOR issue, more of an annoyance but wondering if anyone else has been seeing this.
The external drive is older (about 8 years old, Western Digital WD32000ME-01) but works great.

first, you should really replace that drive; 8 years is a long time for a mechanical hard drive. second, make sure it's os x extended (journaled) as a format before you start using it. last...sounds like your drive is sporadically losing it's connection to your mac, which can't be a good thing (you can try resetting the SMC for your mac, google that). but really...consider a new external drive...
