iPod Eliminating not deleting songs from a Genre On Itune software

Attempting to play only select songs on a specific Genre. I have unchecked the song from the list and not deleted it. The uncheckked songs still appear on my Ipod Genre list, must I create a new playlist or is there another way to do this?
