I just won an ibook on ebay (Ibook 700mhz Combo drive 256mb, airport, panther) for 650$

I am using this machine as my intro to macs and a stepping stone to a powerbook I will be looking to buy summer 2005.

i am pretty sure i will need to get a new battery and would like to upgrade the ram. are their good 3rd party batteries out there? or should i stick to apple batteries? links please?

What kind of ram do i need? i guess i would like to load it up, where should i order it from? is it easy to install?

thanks guys, i cant wait till it arrives, i am so tired of PCs!!!

RAM:
Go to http://www.crucial.com , choose your computer, and order the most you can get. Everyone else on here will vouch for that company, just do a search cor crucial.

Welcome to the Mac world!

You'll probably have a day or two of disorientation while you get used to the OS and its conventions. My advise - if you can't figure out how to do something, ask yourself: "If I knew nothing at all about computers, how would I try to do this?" Most of the time, you'll find that it works.

Back to the question at hand. Buy as much RAM as you can, but more than 768MB is really pushing the point of diminishing returns - unless you can do it for real cheap, I wouldn't bother. Stick with the major brands, Apples can be finicky about their RAM - the PB's more than the iBooks. Kensington, Viking, etc. Do NOT buy generic CompUSA/Fry's/BestBuy RAM - it ain't pretty.

I've found OK deals on RAM at www.macmall.com , www.macconnection.com , and www.smalldog.com .

For batteries, I just read an article/blurb in the recent MacWorld magazine. They recommended looking at http://www.lindelectronics.com/ and http://www.batterytech.com/ .

This site is a great resource for Mac questions and ideas for software that you might find useful. It's sometimes a bit verbose in here, but you've just got to wade through the stuff that doesn't interest you.

Again, welcome to Macintosh! You'll love it!

Duff-Man says....well, I have bought from both Crucial and Other World. They are both excellent to deal with and I would not hesitate to buy from either again. See which has what you need, and at what price you want, and with the warranty you want....you won't go wrong with either of those vendors.....oh yeah!

Doesn't this machine have a max of 640MB anyways? 128 built in, 512 addon?

I have a powerbook and purchased RAM from a local supplier, and even though the RAM met the spec in the manual it would not work. Purchased from Crucial.com and it worked no problem, so crucial gets my vote.

Congratulations on your Mac.
