For movies, I usually go through The Movie Database. It's what iFlicks defaults to when it tags my movies and most movies have a lot of different posters to choose from. If I can't find something on there, I'll check out Valkae or Get Video Artwork. Both of these are also good for TV shows (although GVA has a much larger selection than Valkae).

For TV shows, if I can't find it on GVA, then I'll hit up The TV Database. They don't have artwork in the 600x600 iTunes format for TV shows, so I'll muck about with the images in Photoshop until I get them to where I like.

And if I can't find what I want on Valkae, MDB or GVA for movies, the Movie Poster Database has some great images that I'll mess around with in Photoshop if need be. Failing that, Google Images.

...I spend too much time on video artwork.

Nice library you got there !

How the hell did you get The Avengers in HD ? LOL

I have no idea what you mean, I think your eyes are playing tricks on you... ;) Maybe you're seeing into the future when it'll be available.

I can tell you that those videos are not all HD, despite what iTunes says. They're all encoded for Apple TV 3, and I guess iFlicks translates that into "oh, if they're for Apple TV 3, then they must be HD." Strangely, there is the occasional movie it won't do it for.

IFlicks determines if something is HD by the number of vertical pixels, not the encoding setting. Many times it gets this wrong especially with PAL format DVDs where the standard definition can have as many as 576 vertical pixels. I'm not sure what the exact number of vertical pixels iFlicks uses to determine if a flick is HD or SD, iDentify2 let's the user determine the tolerances to determine SD/HD.

That said, I own both apps and use them both extensively.

iFlicks has a little drop-down menu where you can change the setting from HD to SD. I just always forget to use it.

Hi all. Since Im a new mac user, and havent looked into tagging tv-shows and movies since my 2ng gen iPhone. Where do I find more info regarding this? Do i need to reencode or convert them? Lets say the sources have both DTS and AC3 for example. And TV-shows, for that matter. Any tips greatly appreciated.

I use the same technique with TV SHOWS as well, except I try to find them on Apple's Website. Usually a search for "Dexter iTunes" will pull up Apple's iTunes page and there is the image. Albeit, it's only 175x175. So when I copy the URL it looks like this:
Code:
http://a5.mzstatic.com/us/r1000/096/Video/17/af/31/mzl.jmfltjhx.170x170-75.jpg
at that point you simply remove the "170x170-75." and BAMM!! you've got a beautiful 600x600 Official iTunes Artwork! Still need to find artwork for one-offs like NAtional Geographic and BBC shows.

All in all though, TV Shows are square and movies are rectangular.

Thank you very much for this amazing tip! Have spent the last couple of hours updating my old artwork with these new hi-res images. Perfect for ATV on the big screen and Retina displays

If your TV shows and movies already work in iTunes, then you don't need to re-encode or convert them. If they don't, you'll need a conversion program. Handbrake is free and a really good one.

As far as the tagging goes, there are two different ways you can do it:

1. Manually - This is when you right-click on a title in iTunes and select Get Info (or highlight a title and use the Command-I hotkey). A window will pop up where you can edit all the metadata, with a few exceptions (you can't change the quality marker from SD to HD, add cast/crew, or ratings with this method). For artwork, you can just drag and drop into the artwork tab.

2. Meta-Tag Editor - There are a bunch of these floating around the web. MetaX is a real popular one and it's free. I use iFlicks, which costs somewhere around $20 (throwing that out there since my App Store is in yen, might not be right on). Both of these scrape data from an online source, usually the TV Database or the Movie Database, and then you can edit the data further if you like (sometimes ratings are off or you may not like the genre it selects and sometimes the descriptions look like they were written by illiterate twelve-year-olds). This way is much faster than the manual method since it scrapes the data for you first and then you only need to tweak things manually if you want.

I'm trying to tag some old Knight Rider seasons but some of the episodes are 2 parts but when iDentify looks up the episode info from IMDb it doesn't see the 2nd part so I'm stuck with 2 different parts with the same file name and it throws off the whole order of the season.

1. Goliath
2. Goliath Part 2 (but it thinks this is the NEXT episode after Goliath when it in fact is the 2nd part of a 2-part episode.

Any ideas how to separate these?

I looked up Knight Rider at IMDb and this seems to be a problem with their episode listing. They don't seem to list the second part of two-part episodes. My guess would be that maybe these two-part episodes were originally aired as hour-long specials or something, and so they're not listing the second part as a separate episode. Or maybe whoever edited the Knight Rider page was either lazy or just a moron.

I checked the TV Database and they've got the two-part episodes listed correctly. I'm not sure if iDentify can do this (never used it myself), but you might want to see if you can change the settings so that it can scrape data from the TVDB instead.

The creator or identify told me it doesn't use imdb for tv shows, just make sure when you edit the episode your have tv show as the type than at the bottom in those fields you have the episode and season correct and hit rescan

Starting to get a little excessive in size. Used to be the usual bloke's library, Aliens, Suspects, Shawshank etc but it's amazing how a genre tipping point is reached when you have 2 under 5s. Bob The Builder, Thomas & Friends and many others have started to make my Drobo and ancient Mac Mini crack at the seams

For me, used DVD sales are what contributed to my massive collection. Used to raid the recycle shops when I was still living in the States.

Does anybody know of an Automator/script that will refresh the id3 tags metadata in iTunes. Usually when u edit the itunes tags in an external application, in order to get it to show on iTunes you have to click the get info option on the media in order for it to refresh. You can also play the media in order to force iTunes to recheck the metadata.

I've searched and searched and can't find anything that enables you to force iTunes's to recheck tags on mass. Sorry I have found one script but it's only available on windows :(

Has anybody else found a solution to this

Wow - this is some great info! I've got a little bit of OCD with my media collection. If anything isn't labelled right, I have trouble sleeping. Maybe I have problems ...

Movies and TV Shows have been simple enough for me, with a little fine-tuning of the tags to make sure it fits my OCD. However, I'm stumped on what to do with things like pro wrestling (yes, I realise how sad this is!).

So, I've got all 28 Wrestlemanias (amongst others). Would they be filed as a tv show with the genre wrestling, and each event being one episode? Or would it be better to have them individually as movies and make a playlist?

Not sure what will file them the best when I view through ATV. Thoughts?

If you want to do it the way iTunes does it, they have Wrestlemania 28 and 27 as TV Seasons, with each match labeled as an episode.

Seems like we suffer from the same affliction. As for what to do with your Wrestlemanias, I guess it depends on what you personally want to classify it as. You could do it as each Wrestlemania a separate movie or a separate TV-movie (for example, I've got Burn Notice: The Fall of Sam Axe listed as a TV show and it shows up as the only episode of that season as opposed to listing it in movies). Or you could do each Wrestlemania as a separate season with the matches being different episodes.

Thanks, I've maintained the same library file for about 5 years, so maybe it's time to freshen up and start again. But it means you lose ratings, playlists & counts etc

I love the idea of listing each Wrestlemania as a different season with each match being an episode (as per the iTunes store). However, all of my files are .avi (or equivalent) that I'll be converting to .m4v using iVI (as I'm doing this with all my tv shows, movies and documentaries). Can I split single files to categorise the matches differently?

Why can't iTunes just let you edit the file type list and create your own types (movies, tv shows, wrestling, documentaries, porn). Plex does - I just don't particularly care for the interface of Plex ...

Depends on your converter. iSkySoft iMedia Converter, for example, allows you to edit like this. Or you could probably use QuickTime's Trim feature to cut the matches where you want and save them as separate files. Or just use a regular video editor.
