New Refurb iMac 17/2.0/160 HD/G5 from the Apple store.
Question: When running apps. it sounds like a box of crickets
singing in four part harmony:) Basically, a high pitch sound that goes up in down. Is it the fans or HD? Is this common or do I need to contact Tech?
It's pretty annoying. I would appreciate a little feedback.
Thanks

My iMac rev's up when I do something processor intensive, like start up Dashboard for the first time or play h.264 video. those sounds are the fans, not the hard drive. Once that process is done, they rev back done to normal. I woulnd't worry about it too much, if it does bother you, you can set the process to reduced in the system prefs. That should quiet things down a bit, but your computer might run a bit slower.
