how do i install tiger on my external HD and make it bootable....how do i select which volume to boot from...i dont have any previous versions of OS X installed on the external HD

First off, what type of external HD do you have? If it's only USB, it won't boot. If it is firewire, you need it to be class compliant.

To boot it from the external, I would just assume that you just install it onto there and then when you're starting up, press cmd+shift+opt+delete to select that volume to boot with...but I've never tried it before, so I can't be positive.
