I was just on to Apple support about this and the agent said Apple are aware of the issue and working on it. No timeframe given.

I've spoken to Apple support today as well, and their representative also admitted that they where aware of a software fault with 6s's causing this problem. They gave a time frame of a week or tow for a patch to be rolled out.

Fingers crossed that this is accurate!!

I went to the Apple store just this morning and explained the situation to them. They ran a diagnostic on the battery and, while it was still in an acceptable range, they went ahead and gave me a new phone. They didn't admit that they were aware of the problem, but with how fast they gave me a new phone, I'd have to say that they are aware of it. I had to wait an hour or so because I was a walk in, but the whole process maybe took 20 minutes.

So I did the whole letting the battery drain all the way by turning on my flashlight, and today I'm at 17%, and it hasn't shut down yet. Hopefully this did the trick. We shall see if I actually get below 10%.

Edit: Only made it to 13% before it finally shut down.

I've been to 2 apple stores - in NYC and London. In both they ran a diagnostic tests and... didn't want to give me a new phone... :( my problem with battery started around January 2016

Let's hope. My one year old 6S started shutting down without warning after upgrading to iOS 10. The subsequent releases (through 10.1.1) have not changed the behavior.

Previous to the update, when my phone got to 20%, it would pop up the warning and offer the low power mode. Now, my battery can be at 64%, and it'll shut off without any warning. I will note that the battery meter will show a pretty fast decline (say, 75% to 64% in 10 minutes). This is with a podcast player playing audio, and usually looking at Twitter. This is the exact same behavior I'd use before the upgrade to iOS 10.

I like the suggestion to turn off background App refresh. I'll try that tomorrow.

I think I’m getting my phone back in a couple of days. I wonder what the repair summary is though.

Same problem here, iPhone 6s UK 64GB, when temperature is quite cold it would turn off when 30-40%. Tried restore but the problem remain. So annoying!

I bought a certified pre-owned iPhone 6S from Best Buy less than 2 weeks ago, and I am having the same exact problem you are describing on this thread.

I can still return the phone to Best Buy since it hasn't been 90 days, just trying to figure out if it is a battery issue and not a software problem. I did connect remotely to apple support chat and the guy ran diagnostic on my phone and said it wasn't a hardware issue, but I read on this other site that describes the same issue but with jailbroken phones (mine is not):

"It will continue getting worse. I fixed it by replacing the battery in my 6s. Unfortunately, the way that Apple's battery health program works (the one that the geniuses will run on your phone when you take it to the genius bar to diagnose your battery) it is designed to ignore this particular type of battery failure / degradation. What happens is the 6s battery voltage drops more than it should when under a high current draw. a few places that and he had me do a restore on it and it just happened again now."

https://www.reddit.com/r/jailbreak/comments/5cy1ni/help_ios_933_jb_phone_shuts_down_at_2040_battery/

If I do return it, would it be worth getting a replacement or are they just going to send me a phone with the same exact battery and/or problem most likely?

If it's definitely a software issue, how do I confirm this and have they found a 100% fix to this yet? How long will it take if not. I can get a refund instead of a replacement if I need to, also. But I don't even know what I should buy if I got the refund if all the certified pre-owned iphone 6s 64gb could possibly have the same faulty battery. If I were going to buy a new battery, is there a certain site I should buy it from that will not be these faulty batteries described in the other thread I read? Help! :(

Does this also happens on ios 10.2 public beta or developer beta. Had anyone tried?

I'm on the latest beta and haven't had a shutdown yet (fingers crossed). This problem is driving me crazy. I have an appointment with the Genius Bar on Thursday, but don't really wanna swap my phone out if it's only a software problem.

Yes. I had shutdowns on my 6s when using 10.2 beta.

I have since sold the 6s and now have a shiny new 7 plus. No issues thus far.

Same problem here, it started one month after the expiration of the warranty... After that, it shuts down in a daily basis.

I tried to disable the background refresh of the apps, it didn't work. However, I've noticed something and it seems to be working for me. Have you tried to run the iPhone in low battery mode? I will complete today the second cycle of the battery without problems so far.

I promised to report back: I had my 6s battery replaced and i still experienced shutdowns between 10-20% on 10.2b2

I had no more shutdowns between 40-50% which i had before that, though.

Now let's keep our fingers crossed apple fixes this with a software update.
I am testing 10.2b3 currently.

I'm talking about the new beta released yesterday.

I installed the most recent beta (released yesterday) last night and my phone died at 10% today so it's still not fixed in the most recent beta.

I wish Apple would come out and even announce they're looking into it. Promising to see China have given them 10 days to respond so that might get them to make an announcement.

A few of the earlier posts are saying that apple staff told them it will be fixed in a software update. Let's hope this is the case and they sort it quickly.

Had 2 iPhone 6s, bought at the same time, each with exactly this problem.
Worked fine until around the release of ios 10 or 10.1
Done a lot of reading and could be 3 reasons of this failure: SMC chip fault, battery fault or ios 10

The firm where I bought them offered a free inspection so I send one of the devices to them.

In the meantime I bought a new 6s which arrived with ios 9.3.3.
I upgraded to ios 10.1 ... to discover the phone starts having *exactly* the same problems.
A one week old iphone 6s just crashed with 36% battery life

I have a 6s and have been having this problem for quite a while. Phone shuts off when there's about 20-30% battery left, although it can vary. When I hold power button it says plug it in. When I press home and power it comes on, shows 30 or 48% battery or whatever and after 5 seconds shuts off.

I tried a full dfu restore and it didn't work. I went to the apple store and they checked that my hardware/battery were just fine. The guy said I was the third person today with the same problem and that he expects it to be corrected shortly with an update. One of their suggestions was to drain the battery completely, however this was impossible due to the problem.

FINALLY I tried running down the battery with the flashlight and it WORKED. Battery drained all the way and it doesn't shut off anymore.

Important note: you can't use any other programs. I tried making it drain faster by turning on netflix and the flashlight--it shut off as usual. You need to turn on the flashlight and just put your phone down and don't touch it. Once it drains, charge to 100% as normal. If I remember correctly I had to do this two nights in a row and have since not had problems.

Hope this helps, pretty annoying problem to have.

I would suggest trying this method because I did it two nights in a row, and now my phone is down to 1% life remaining, and I have had no shut downs today. I will see tomorrow how it goes without doing the flashlight trick tonight, but for now it is working correctly again.

According to Apple Support Chat: This seems to be a common concern, please don’t worry, Apple’s engineers are already working on this. Please just wait for the next update for this to get fixed. I do apologize for the inconvenience, I’m sure everything will be fine with the next update release.
