iPod ipod going down the pan

hi guys need help
when i plug my 3rd gen 40gb ipod (on windows) the pc wont regognise it and it just carries on recharging.............i've tried it on a friends pc and it recognisises it but when i've tried mine with firewire and usb adaptor nothing happens
please help im missing it so

it could be your PC's USB and FireWire drivers have gone down the pan, and not the iPod?

Upgrade your iTUnes, make sure iPOD is fully updated, and give it a reset. Not likely a hardware failures.......

This is a common problem with PCs....

no i've got other things plugged in to usb and firewire that work fine

itunes is 5 and cant update as pc won't recognise..could try update on a mates pc
