Long pressing shows customize then there's only an option to change wallpaper. Are actual widgets on the lock screeen available to install on the ipad pro only or?

If your iPad support iPadOS17 you should also be able to add lock screen widgets.
The steps that you need to take:
  • Wake your iPad, and hold down on the Lock Screen
  • Tap Customise
  • Tap add Widgets
  • Select from the list
  • Tap X and then Done

That's what wasn't working, but got it working eventually. First had to select customize, add wallpaper and it wasn't until after trying trying roughly five wallpapers that one showed the option to add widgets. Prior to that, there were also error messages about widgets.

No, you cannot add widgets to the lock screen of iPad Air 5th gen in iOS 17 as of today, September 24, 2023.This feature is currently available on iPhone and may it becomes part of iPad Air 5th gen in iOS 17 in future.
