iPod itues won't play from unsync'd ipod

I'm trying to play my ipod through a mac w/o syncing it yet (as i have to get all my old music off my old hard drive first). My new cpu is a Mac & it doesn't seem to let me. My work computer (a PC) is able to play music through itunes w/o having to be sync'd. Any ideas?

My guess is your iPod is formatted for a PC, thus it won't work on your Mac without a reformat.
