iWork vs iCloud

Bit confused.. Update Pages and Keynote on my iPhone - noticed I could open a doc through iWork. I imagine that iWork has been around for a while but I've not noticed it.

So, what's the difference between the two - they sound pretty similar, why use one over the other?
