Kernel Panic after installation of 10.8

Discussion in 'OS X Mountain Lion (10.8)' started by Killerbob, Jul 27, 2012.

Since doing a "Clean Install", followed by migration from Time Capsule, I have been getting two kernel panics this afternoon.

I have never experienced systematic kernel panics, and don't know what to look for, and hope someone can guide me to what is causing the crashes.

Can someone please read into the log, and help me to understand what/who the culprit is???

    Thanks in advance!!

    cocky jeremy

Usually kernel panics are a sign of hardware problems. I started getting them immediately after upgrading to Lion last year and spent almost a year trying to figure out the issue on my own (I'm hard headed like that) and it ended up being a bad video card. Might want to go get that checked out by Apple if it keeps doing it.
  3. macrumors 6502a

I know what you mean, but this Mac Pro has been working for 3 years with no issues, and only after installing 10.8 today do I start getting this panics. It is a bit perculiar that it should not be software or driver related.

How do I read into the log to see what caused the crash?

  4. macrumors 6502a

    Bump, and some more info:

Is it possible that heat can cause Kernel Panics? If the heat is high enough, and the RAM start acting erratically, could that not cause Kernel Panics?

Kernel Panic After Clean Mountain Lion Install

I have never gotten a kernel panic on my Mac in the past. I was on Snow Leapoard and then upgraded to Lion and at the same time added a new 1TB Samsung HDD and upgraded memory from 4gb to Kingston 8gb for a mid 2010 MacBook Pro i5.

Then I did a clean install with Moutain Lion and manual copied over my iTunes media, Aperture pictures and documents from My TimeMachine backup to the new ML install.

Since ML I have had several kernel panics. I ran the Apple Hardware test tool and everything was ok. Except when I ran the extended test and then the program would hang. So maybe there is a hardware issue.

I swapped out the upgraded Kingston 8gb memory back to the original Apple memory and I'm still getting kernel panics. I'm under AppleCare so I'm making a genius appointment next.

    Any suggestions?
  6. macrumors 6502a

I ended up identifying the videocard as the culprit. Probably due to overheating it had simply become faulty. I replaced it, and since then all has been fine...
  7. macrumors regular

    Video problem it is...

Ok, just to follow up. I took my MacBook Pro to the Apple Store. They looked at it and said that it failed the video test and the logic board needs to be replaced. The Genius person did say that they had to run a test specific for my machine (mid 2010 MacBook Pro i5). I have AppleCare so I don't have to for anything I just find it a little odd that this problem surfaced after a clean install of Mountain Lion. Included labor this repair would have cost me $310 if I didnt have AppleCare.
  8. macrumors 6502a

i know its possibly just coincidence, but i also started getting kernel panics immediately after doing a complete clean install of ML (i try to keep as many files as possible on externals, so there isn't any junk or leftover clutter). i ran a hardware test and got no errors.

i suppose i'll have to book an apple appointment as well. even if it does turn out to be something hardware related, does anyone know if its technically possible that ML could be triggering some sort of hardware failure?
