Alright,

I just got mac os X Leopard, and ever since, at least every session, i get this blue screen, out of nowhere without any warning, and it goes away after a second or two, and then shows my desktop, just like it would be after i'd log in, and all the programs would be closed. It's very frustrating, I'm just talking on MSN, or on safari, and out of nowhere, I see a blue screen for a second, then i have to restart every program i had running. I checked the console, and there's nothing obvious there. I also can't be sure if this ever happened on tiger, but i just know it happens a lot in leopard. This blue screen also hangs a bit on startup, but it's not that big a problem. Could anyone tell me what this problem is even called, i don't even know how to google this problem. I really want to get this fixed, before i start doing serious school work, and i'd have to start half way through because of this problem.

Thank you!!

Yes, I'm having the same problem on my MBP when attached to an external monitor. It seems to happen only then. Does anyone have a solution to this issue? Thanks in advance!

I just started having this problem recently, as the thread starter said, it's hard to figure out what to google with this. I found this thread and it's the exact description of what's happening to me. It just happened for the second time. The first time was maybe a week ago, it was weird, but I just assumed it was a freak incident and hopefully wouldn't happen again.

I'm on 10.6.5 on a mid 2007 MBP. This last time it happened just after switching to full screen view on a Flash video. I can't remember what I was doing last time it happened, I don't think it was a flash video, but maybe. I'll keep my eyes out for the next time it happens.

Anybody have any suggestions? Or even just suggestions on what else I could pop in to google to search this issue? It's hard to describe, but ya it's like all of a sudden I'm instantly logged out and I'm being logged in again, starting from a blue screen, and then I see my desktop. The "uptime" counter does not reset though.

I just ran a disk check, it came up healthy, and then I repaired permissions... Anybody think this could have remedied the situation? Somehow I feel like this would be more of a hardware problem or something. I'm a little nervous this'll get me at some key stressful moment... I'm submitting my Master's thesis in two weeks!

This just happened again today. I was watching a flash video full screen (it wasn't very high res, not even 720p), the computer crashed when I turned up the volume on my computer, it seemed to stall before showing the volume floater image, actually it never got that far, it just went to the blue screen and "re-logged in".

Sounds like windowserver is crashing for some reason.

Please post contents of /var/log/windowserver.log, and anything that looks related in /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

and there seems to be a diagnostic report for this crash and the last one that happened on Nov27, both listed under WindowServer_..._localhost.crash (the "..." is the time and date). There's another crash diagnostic report before that, on Nov 22 (i'm trying to remember if that was the first time I had this crash) but that one is listed as locationd_..._localhost.crash.

Here's what the latest report says, i hope this isn't too long for a post!

Looks like something went awry in the video driver.

Seems like Flash might be tickling a bug in the driver here.

Have you taken all of the recent updates from Software Update? I can't speak definitively about NVIDIA's drivers (I have ATI)...

Hmm ya, that seems to be it. I do run Software Update on a regular basis. I did have my Graphics card replaced under the extended MBP warranty thing they had for the NVIDIA issues, could this be related to that? I know with that issue, the symptom I was getting was more along the lines of Kernal Panics, but I thought it's at least worth mentioning.

Thanks a lot for your input!

I have a Mac Mini connected to a TV via a HDMI to *whatever* adapter (it's not the latest model). Somewhere along the chain one of the connections is loose. I can wiggle the wire and get the momentary blue screen you're talking about. I also have an HDMI switcher. When I switch to the Mac Mini connection from one of the others the first thing I see is the blue screen which quickly fades to whatever should be visible. I never worried about since I just figured it happened when the Mac didn't detect a monitor, either momentarily or otherwise.

EDIT: Wait. I hadn't seen the part about having to restarts apps. That's not happening to me. If the connection is loose I can be watching something in XBMC and be constantly seeing this blue screen every ten seconds until I get up and do something. The movie keeps playing the entire time. Maybe there's a connection between our problems. If not, sorry for the non-help.

Hi Khanyl, that sounds like something different, doesn't sound like too serious an issue. The blue screen I'm seeing is definitely the screen you get before logging in. i've got automatic login turned on, but I'm guessing, based on other people's reports, that if I turned that off, I would get the blue screen followed by the login window.

I just had a pretty serious incident involving graphics glitches, I'm not sure if it's related. I was just opening a photo to edit in iPhoto, and all of a sudden, everything became unresponsive. The cursor still moved, but nothing responded to cursor movements (dock magnification didn't react) and nothing responded to any clicking or anything. Even trying force quit wouldn't bring up the force quit window, apple-tab wouldn't bring up the app switcher... By accident though, I hit the apple-esc key for Front Row, and that came up just fine. I could navigate through Front Row totally normally, listen to music, look at photos and everything. When I exited Front Row, things still weren't normal though, and I started to notice weird visual glitches. Big black boxes were all over the place, vaguely in the shape of the Force Quit window, or the Shut Down, Sleep etc dialog. Some windows sorta became transparent in sections, and then occasionally the screen would flicker really violently, like seizure-inducing flashing. The mouse cursor was still responding to the trackpad, though nothing else on the screen would respond. I could still go back in to Front Row without any issues there at all. Finally I gave up and held the power button until it shut off. On reboot, I was a little worried to see the screen turning on at maybe a lower resolution setting, and more of a square aspect ratio with black bars down either side. Eventually it started up, everything back to normal.

I found a whole bunch of stuff in the Console logs, especially this message related to NVIDIA that came maybe a 100 times in the space of about 4 minutes, part way into this episode, continuing until I shut the computer down:

Which computer do you have by the way? Mine is a mid-2007 MBP, one of the one's with the troublesome NVIDIA graphics card, I'm wondering if that's related at all. I know NVIDIA keeps coming up in the various error logs and stuff.

do you think it's likely that my first "logout" crashes are related to the same problem, just a different symptom?

This computer's over 3 years old now, I hope Apple would still cover it if its the graphics card they've acknowledged is faulty.

Were there any errors like the "Channel exception!" around the time of the other windowserver crashes? If so, then that argues pretty strongly for these being different symptoms of the same root problem.

If not, they still may have the same root cause. I guess it wouldn't hurt to try swapping out the graphics card again (if you can get Apple to do it for you)...

do you think it's likely that my first "logout" crashes are related to the same problem, just a different symptom?

This computer's over 3 years old now, I hope Apple would still cover it if its the graphics card they've acknowledged is faulty.

Sounds like we have the same computer with the same problem!

15" 2007 MBP with the replaced video card and the same problems started shortly after updating to 10.6.5.

Any resolution to the problem on your end?

Thanks,
D

no, no resolution yet, only increased frequency of crashes, both the WindowServer crash where it logs me out, and also occasionally a crazy glitchy graphics crash. I've been very busy and haven't had time to bring my computer in to the Apple store yet. I might try to bring it in this week as I'll be going away for a few days and might be able to get away with not having a computer.

Sound more and more like video card death spiral to me...

I experience exactly the same issue.

However, my MBP is mid 2010.

Mine has exactly the same log:

I'm experiencing this everyday in the past few days. Didn't install anything new.

The computer simply hangs, but I can still move my mouse. Then the mouse cursor freezes, screen gets blue. My wallpaper loads. The menu bar loads, finder window and then the dock. It feels exactly like I'm logging in for the first time.

This is a 6 months old machine, and after running hardware tests, it showed everything is OK.

For sure it's a bug in OS X. Did send some feedback through Apple Feedback - and please, everyone experiencing it here, send some report there, otherwise they simply won't know it.

So just before the holidays I brought my MBP into the apple store, they ran the NVIDIA graphics card test and it failed right away, so they replaced my mother board for the second time under the extended 4-year coverage for these faulty NVIDIA cards.
And then yesterday, I had another Window-server crash where it logs me out, this time while switching to full screen view while watching a .mkv 720p video in VLC. So I guess I had two separate problems. Hopefully this persisting problem is covered with the new 10.6.6 which I just installed, I'll be keeping my eyes out for further crashes.

Just to follow up, 10.6.6 definitely did NOT fix this problem. i'm still getting this crash very frequently. I hesitate before turning any flash video to full screen and double check that I've saved all my work, but it's still REALLY annoying. Anybody else having troubles with this lately? Again, I JUST had the NVIDIA graphics card replaced, so it seems to be a separate issue.
