I recently had a problem with my macbook pro and was wondering if this was a software or hardware issue. After I updated to el capitan, my macbook crashes if I try connecting my Anker USB 3.0 hub while it is on. This never happened before, especially after I bought the hub. Is this an issue with the hub or the laptop? I have the mid 2012 15 inch macbook pro.

This is strange and reminds me of an issue I had. I had a particular micro USB cable that, when plugged in to my 2010 13" pro, would make it shut off. Never searched for an answer because it was only that ONE cable. I would blame the hub. Easiest way to see, is try another hub, and try your hub on another mac.

If you find out why this is happening, I'd sure be interested.
