I have a second monitor attached to my iMac G5 and was wondering if it were possible to make the second monitor the main screen while the built-in iMac monitor is the secondary monitor.

Yep, in the Arrangement part of the Displays pane in the System Preferences you just drag the red outline of the menu bar to the other screen.
