I just got a macbook air and I'm somewhat new to macs - I can't find the HD in the finder window. I know enough about macs that usually I open the finder window and on the left under devices, the Macintosh HD is there. It simply is not there on the air. Am I missing something? I did a spotlight search for macintosh hd, and nothing comes up. I just wanted to check space left on the computer.

Lion hides it by default I think.
I'm a Mac n00b as well and don't have it with me but IIRC, look at Finder's preferences and you can un-hide it.
