I am interested in to what changes. I just moved to the iPhone last week after deciding on leaving Android platform. I had many other Apple products except PC. yesterday I signed up for a now 60 day free trial to see how I like it. iDisk is the most likely all I will need. My phone and iPad function off of exchange from my work.

If iDisk is all you need, Dropbox is (for me) a lot faster. iDisk is pretty slow. I like the rest of MobileMe, but I don't really use iDisk because of its speed.

I wonder what it means for my long running .mac mail account that I've had since Mobile was .Mac and before that iTools.

I'm in the same boat - I've got a very nice and very short email address at mac.com that is one of my primary email accounts... so I'm kind of possessive.

I'm pretty much expecting it to go away within the next year at this point... but I've got no real evidence on which to base that bit of paranoia.

Stop thinking your information is so important. It's not. Governments only want our money. That's it.

Also, where are you getting the information about the Constitution? Is there an exemption clause in the Constitution about cloud storage? I missed that part.

Additionally, you should encrypt anything stored remotely. I have several terabytes of data on Backblaze, all useless without my encryption key.

Be careful!

I suggest you two actually read the news and follow the legal issues. No need to spout tin-foil hysteria. Just observe real law enforcements. As to encryption, you're putting way too much faith in it. What were considered uncrackable encryptions are now easily broken. Technology advances.

Still gunnu be an expensive pile of crap if they dont get some servers setup for the majority of customers: Non-US based folks!

Its painful trying to use iDisk if you arent in the US - this should be Apple's top priority with a MoMe update (and by god does it need one!).

I have nothing the government would want. They can go through all my stuff for all i care.

Beware that what is stored in the cloud is not protected by the usual Constitutional protections against government search, seizure, privacy, etc. Be prepared for warrant-less invasion of your privacy. Don't store anything on there you want private. No credit card info, no legal documents, nada.

I do agree with your sentiment, but I think your examples are not the best choice. I'd say don't store anything you'd feel you could be incriminated with in a warrantless search. I'd use examples like music and movies you didn't purchase.

Many legal documents are public information anyhow. As far as credit cards go you'd want them encrypted anywhere you store them electronically. Any private legal documents should be encrypted as well.

You might want an encryption method with plausible deniability, like TrueCrypt. Fill the "I was compelled to provide this password" side with (legal) porn.

i just hope we get free @me.com email address
I never give out my @me.com address. NEVER!

It smacks of the ultra narcissistic Steve Jobs.
I'd like to think this new version of MobileMe will offer some innovative features, but I'm not feeling very good about it.

In fact I'm very disappointed in Apple as a gadget & consumer electronics company. I never expected Apple Computer would change it's name and morph into what it is today.

Nor did I imagine Jobs and his disciples would display fear of competition the way they fear Android. I often wonder where fanboys directed their fear, insecurities and anger before they had Android to bash.

I second this. iDisk pretty much blows compared to Dropbox.

Maybe this will change with the MM updates coming. I like Dropbox because of its speed and ease of use. I never have to worry if it's working. iDisk is a nice thing to have, but I'd never sign up for MM just for that.

I actually use the Calendar, Contacts and FindMy services. I could care less about the email and pictures. iDisk I use occasionally when I'm too lazy to open up DropBox.

I hope they at least keep the Calendar and Contacts support up for a while.

well since you still can sign up for a full year with mobile me there is no danger of them canceling anything anytime soon.

also don't expect anything for free either.

Or don't store anything there un/semi encrypted.

encrypted .dmg could be your friend.
And send every email securely.
On a side note my entire credit report was sent unencrypted by my mortgage company to my email. I had previously required them to winZip AES-256 communications.... They had a hard time with that request, as they felt email was 'just as secure' as paper mail (to which I said... "I don't want it just as secure... I want it 'secure enough' for my satisfaction.").

I can't wait!
It's this type of blind faith, with not one fact of what the service will be like, that is so unique and scary.

No wonder Apple is ultra successful, they don't even have to do anything and the customers opening their wallet at the mere suggestion of a new product.

Simply mind boggling.

Don't any of these fanboys think for themselves ?
He probably meant he can't wait to see what the new MobileMe is like. He obviously doesn't just adhere to whatever Apple offers since he's jailbroken his iPhone

Apple Retail Store Alstertal in Hamburg, Germany as of a couple of days ago still has MobileMe Retail packages on display, for sale and is still advertising them next to the Macs on display.
