NAS with Apple TV and PLEX

Hello, I gonna buy NAS , I dont know , which NAS is better for me. I choosing between Synology 112j and QNAP ts-112.

1.
I find some video on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXlS26M_CBw here is QNAP with NAS and 3rd part (Apple TV, Roku,...).
We can install app PLEX for Apple TV 3 and we can install this app on QNAP.
What does it mean? I can play my films from NAS to Apple TV 3 with out Macbook?
Or it not work?

I think you can run plex media server from Synology and use plexnet on atv3 . Check this thread and see if it is what u want
