To answer your post however, are you certain that the movies were ripped in 640 x 480 or 320 x 240 size? If the movie is bigger than than 640 x 480 it just won't work - you'll have to resize.
Another good idea is to check the bitrate of the movie - you don't want it to be too demanding - remember, it's supposed to be used on a handheld device, remember?
