Yes, it is faster than a 8600GT. Most of the people complaining about the new MBP GPU don't know what they are talking about. They should spend some time on tomshardware or overclockers and look at benchmarks before posting false information.
A newbie has never spoken such beautiful truth. ;)

Sorry you two, but this simply isn't true. The 8600M GT is still more powerful. Take a look at this other thread I posted.

No, your 320M is not more powerful than the older 8600M GT

I don't play games on my laptop (got consoles for that), but I do care about HD flash videos running and 1080p MKV running on it flawlessly without 100% cpu utilization. Why should I care about the extra gpu power, when nothing that I do seems to be GPU accelerated?

It does seem like enhanced graphics are pointless for a lot of things. Nothing has actually implemented OpenCL yet, which is a shame.

Sorry, I should have given instructions:
In Device Manager, double-click the NVidia 320M display adapter and you will bring up the Properties field. From there, click on the Details tab and you will find a field named Properties. Roll down this field to the second entry "Hardware IDs" and note the second value.

Also, could you let us know if the Cirrus Logic 4206A audio controller is installed? You'll find that one under Sound, Video and Game controllers in Device Manager.

Thanks again!

hardware ID: PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_08A0&SUBSYS_00C2106B

Yes on the Cirrus Logic CS4206A (AB13)

As a gamer/SC2 player, would you recommend if I got a 15" MBP over an Asus G73 with the ATi 5870 1G GDDR5?

i would go with the Asus if you are a serious gamer. however, the 15" MBP should be able to handle SC2 very well since the graphics are supposed to be 2x faster

i've been able to play every 1080p quicktime trailer, video file, youtube video flawlessly with the new 13" mbp. CPU utilization is about 60%

Tbh, I'm not really a serious gamer at all. I just like to play my casual RTS games and sometimes FPS (CoD, and the like). But no, I'm not extremely serious about gaming. It's why I'm hesitant over which to get.

As am I, but perhaps 13'' is even too small to enjoy gaming? That, and what about the C2D? How does the 2.66 13'' compare to the i5 2.4 in the 15''?

Can somebody try benchmarking the 2.4 ghz 13" with Modern Warfare 2 and Crysis and post your fps and settings(I'm not much of a pc gamer either, but it would be nice to have them anywhere I go)

thanks for posting this info :)

I'm excited to upgrade my G4 12 inch Powerbook, have been waiting over 9 months to do so. My computer is currently missing a delete key, the T is starting to fall off, and the case is separating a bit because I've dropped it a few too many times.

Serious dilemma for me though - no matte option for the 13 inch. Grr. I'm a 5 foot 2 female, so the idea of toting around a 15 incher seems a bit much... but darnit I want that screen. Decisions, decisions... sigh.

Thanks for the info! That hardware ID is not listed in the BootCamp V3.1 graphics drivers posted in January, so we'll need the DVD provided with the laptop following Windows installation.

If the Matshita drive is the same as the mid-2009 models than the only difference will be the NVidia GPU. Should be able to just pop in my current HDD, boot up in Windows and update the graphics driver with the recovery DVD! Now if I could only get my hands on one...just canceled my Apple Store order 'cos I don't want to wait until 5 May for delivery. May have to drive to Zürich next week in the hopes of finding one there.

You always have to speak at native resolution. Running a game at 1280x800 resolution on a 1440x900 screen is simply a ******** display quality.

And as native resolution, 320m is faster than 8600 GT, even if the 8600 GT is more powerfull.

I've been waiting to reply to this until I've had first hand experience. Yesterday my buddy let me borrow his brand new base model 13" for 2 full days as he's well let's say incapacitated. This new 13" running WoW next to my 15" 4,1 MBP running WoW difference = night and day.

COD4 difference night and day.

Overall feel and snappiness of machine no comparison. Granted RAM is considerably newer but not much else. I'm now buying a 13" for my road-horse knowing I can still very much legitimately game on it when I feel the urge. I know you want to justify that our older 8600's still stack up but they just don't.

You mean GMA950, not GTA950.

I'll like to know how you got that statistic of 90%. The GMA950 is a very old, piece of crap graphics chip made by Intel in 2005. Seeing how it's 5 years old, it probably hasn't been sold on any Windows laptop in years. The GMA950 has been replaced by the X3100 and the 4500MHD, and now the GMA (HD) which is in your Arrandale laptop.

I have a 2.5 year old MacBook with a GMA 950. All MacBooks back then were sold with it, as were nearly all laptops within from low to mid price-range because manufacturers felt it was fast enough for most users while it also extended battery life. In reality, it was probably used to save themselves money, while the rest was just marketing. Doesn't matter though, because that's what we got. Maybe Intel gave all manufacturers a deal for using their motherboard with Intel graphics integrated inside. So while gnasher729's stats may be a bit exaggerated, I wouldn't be surprised if it was within the ballpark (say 50%, 60%, 70%).

Ok I overclocked my 320M to GPU630 mhz and shader at 1280mhz.

3d mark scores indicate I get a 5237 up from 4704. Using Nvidia Inspector 1.9.4.4 to overclock. Levels have been tested by many people on this thread and are safe https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/904300/

Anyhow, all I have to say is my MBP is my first Mac ever, and it combines the best of all worlds into one slim durable unibody package.

My spects are 2.4ghz core 2 duo (P8600), 4gb ram, Nvidia 320M, Vista Ultimate 32bit.
