Does that mean it is no longer possible to download and use Lion? While my late 2008 non-aluminum MacBook is supported by Lion, it is not supported by Mountain Lion.

In fairness, it's not really Apples fault that you chose to wait well over a year to update.
Besides, Do you need to update? Assuming you are still on 10.6, then you are missing very little and are still using a very good, if not the best version of OS X to date (In my opinion
). I only moved on to 10.7 for MobileMe/iCloud reasons. Not for the extra bloat & GUI tat which chomps on more resources, and can makes itself apparent on older Macs.
