My 2007 macbook has recently started to be a bit slower than usual, i decided to verify the permissions in disk utility.

It then came up with around 100 readings that started with;
Open error 5: "input/ output error" on usr/X11/share/man/man3/ ...

To finish verifying the permissions it takes around 1-2 hours.

This is causing my mac to take stupid amounts of time to do the simplest of functions.
My mac has a 500GB hard drive and 2gb ram

Any help solving this would help, i tried googling it with not much help.

This is the second time ive had a hard drive fail on me with this mac do you think i could bring this up with apple? Bearing in mind i did replace the old hard drive myself after apple were going to charge me a silly amount of money to replace the old one.
Some people have suggested that it could also be a software problem, instead of hardware?
