Partition TM/Backup EXT HDD

I'm going to be receiving my rMBP on Monday so I'm trying to clear up/clear out my current 750GB HDD.

I have a 500GB external disk which I currently use for time machine once a week, however I was told I could partition the disk for a full backup of this machine, plus use it as removable storage for my new mac which will only have a 128GB.

I've had a little look in Disk Utility, and I'm probably being thick (and tired as it's midnight) but how do I partition the drive?
