Does anyone know if the processor PowerPC G5 (2.2) is the most up to date (ie. the 970FX?) I've just bought a brand new Mac and thought the most up to date processor was the 970FX. When I go to About This Mac it brings up PowerPC G5 (2.2) as the processor name. I'm mentioning this because I have a steady whine from my power supply, a problem I though Apple had put right on the most up to date Macs. I'm wondering if I have been sold an 'older' version Mac. Any help greatly appreciated.

PPC 970FX is IBM's name (who make it) for the PPC G5 2.2

That's the old processor, the 130nm version.

Edit -- Explanation removed after I saw the newbie was cross posting. [IMG]

But I might be tempted to put the info back if the newbie tells us what machine was purchased, and the build date on the box.

Now you've got me curious. My new Dual 2.0 says thus: PowerPC G5 (3.0)

So is that the 970fx or the "regular" 970? I guess in the end it doesn't really matter but my curiosity is piqued.

Machiine was delivered to me last Monday direct from Apple. (8/16/04).

This is the 970fx (rev 3.0 CPU), the DP2.0PM's seem to have been shipping from the factory with the FXs -- if they shipped sometime in August (don't know the exact build date of the switch).

If somebody is getting the 130nm processor in a new DP2.0, it's either floor stock or something built awhile ago.

Don't know about the DP1.8PM -- no real confirmation from people either way.

Info courtesy of Sun Baked via Shadowband:

The procedure to determine your CPU version is as follows:

    1) bring up a terminal window (Applications/Utilities/Terminal)
    2) enter the following:

    ioreg -l | grep cpu-version

A CPU version of <003c0300> equates to PowerPc 970fx rev 3
A CPU version of <00390202> equates to PowerPc 970 rev 2.2
