Recommend a beginner rip software for printer (various media)

I don't want to spend a ton of money not knowing which will suit my needs best. To learn trap settings, rastering, and such.

Which RIP's are you looking at?, I know AGFA Apogee 11 client bogs a mini down a bit ( it really wants a good GPU ), but the main engine ( infrastructure as they call it ) is Windows only.

our Old Cannon RIP is decent on the new mini if you have lots of RAM to blow

I just have a MacBook Pro 16GB. I want a basic RIP to learn my way around it and see where to go from there. Mostly print stuff.
