Sony Working on App to Stream PS4 Games on Mac and PC

Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida has announced on Twitter that the company is working on an official Remote Play app for Mac and PC, enabling users to stream and play PS4 games on desktops and notebooks, per The Verge.

Remote Play is currently limited to various Sony devices, including the PlayStation Vita, PlayStation TV and newer Xperia-branded smartphones and tablets. All new PS4 games must be compatible with Remote Play, except for games that use peripherals such as PlayStation Move.
Some people asked if we plan to provide Remote Play function to PC, and yes, we are indeed working on an official application for PC/Mac. :D - Shuhei Yoshida (@yosp) November 27, 2015

While owning a PS4 gaming console will still be required to play games like Fallout 4 or Destiny on a Mac or PC, the expanded Remote Play app will move Sony games one step closer to true cross-platform playability.

Brilliant, brilliant idea.

Kids hog the TV. You have the Playstation turned on, whirling away. You stream the game and play on your iMac/MacBook, wherever you want, with no framerate issues or performance problems. Hopefully the streaming will be really smooth and support some nice resolutions.

Uh oh. Now Bloodborne will be able to distract me everywhere. :/

A great move though. Destiny will work better for me as a drop in remote play thing than it does in the living room.

It works really well on the Vita and PS TV, totally reasonable latency for most games. I expect 1080p. :)

Does this functionality let you play games if you are away from home on your laptop? Or does the computer need to be on the same local network as the PS4 for this to work?
 
It's still a lot to shell out for a few PS4 exclusives. If I was a two-TV user, this would make sense, as I have an HP Stream Mini plugged into one TV for the specific purpose of streaming games from my gaming PC to the TV. A second TV could then be home to the console. Given how much cheaper PC games are to buy, I don't see a PS4 streaming option to be particularly groundbreaking. That said, there are three games exclusive to PS4 that I eventually want to play: Bloodborne, Uncharted 4 and the Last of Us pre/sequel.

PC games may be cheaper, but you need a decent PC to run them well. As Mac users well know, thanks to limited dGPU options, properly smooth next-gen gaming on the Mac screen is a dream, until now. Well, unless you're playing EA's Blackjack 16 Pro - even so, some of the animations still stutter on that game, and you need to pay DLC every time you want another card dealt. (it's not a good game).

Xbox One already does this with Windows, it's not their idea.

I just laugh at you people who made the wrong choice.

Been playing on my Wii U with or without the TV from the day it came out.

Now if only Nintendo would release some games for it. It's both hilarious and sad that Nintendo seems to be clueless about why the console is doing so poorly - it's been out for four years and still has a severe shortage of good games.

No Metroid or F-Zero. No mainline Zelda or Mario. Kirby, Yoshi, Toad, and Pikmin are all insane let downs that feel like Nintendo rushed them out the door (you had 4 years and 6 teams - what the hell were they doing?)

Same news, and same Rumor that happened when Sony were developing what turned out to be a Sony Via only remote play tool for the PS3.. I think they would rather sell you a PlayStation TV or a Sony laptop than give away software.

Nintendo has released far more first party games than their competition - the problem is the lack of third party support to fill in the gaps. I don't know what you expected from a Kirby or Yoshi game...Captain Toad is critically acclaimed as is Pikmin. That 3D Mario World game IS the mainline Mario game. It's New Super Mario Bros. Wii U that's not the mainline game.

As far as the years and teams, your math is wrong and you're forgetting about a number of games those teams have released that you didn't name. Zelda will take many, many years as usual. Metroid will not happen, they have farmed that game out to second parties for more than 20 years.

Should work from anywhere if you have a decent signal at both ends. I spent a good few lunches at work doing Assassins Creed Black Flag busywork remotely from my vita. :)

You can already do this. though its not as simple as this.. you download an android emulator, install the ps remote play app, and set it up. you can then play your ps4 where ever

cMP at lest means you’ve got a few good GPU options.
As with most things, the manufacturer has priced the equipment as high as possible so as to make the decision almost revenue neutral.
The cost of a separate PC, (£X.XX), the console, (£400), plus a few expensive games, (£300), probably amounts to the same amount as a nicely tricked out PC. Makes for a crap decision.

Not perfect but a step in the right decision at least. I’m still praying for a PC port of The Last of Us. This step by Sony whilst welcome doesn’t bring that any closer.

EDIT:
Just seen a PS4 for £280 and that includes ‘Uncharted - The Nathan Drake Collection’ what ever that is.

Nowadays consoles are so underpowered that it is quite cheap and easy to keep a good gaming PC

Alienware's Alpha is pretty great, and there's others like it now, I think. I use one as a kitchen PC, and of course MIGHT play games on it :-D

This is definitely cool/smart of Sony...I've played around with streaming the One, and it works, though there's obvious (though probably not too annoying) artifacting, and I notice some input lag. Maybe some people wouldn't notice it, but it seems obvious to me, though you can probably get used to it. No question hooking a device up direction works better though.

Wish the PS4 had backwards compatibility and non-proprietary batteries in the controller though :-/

What is this "wrong choice?" The majority of WiiU owners have a WiiU *and* another console/gaming set up, as everyone knows its software support is beyond terrible outside of (admittedly awesome) 1st party titles.

Something like remote play isn't a system seller, it's just a nice handy extra.. The wiiU's gamepad's range is atrocious too, in my house it barely works between floors.. Compared with vita remote play which I've done from other cities, they're not exactly the same functionality.
