Right or wrong, I reinstalled my OX S Yosemite, it worked wonders.

Pictures used to take an age to load, accompanied by the coloured spinning wheel, not now they load they load in a flash.
 
How do you open your pictures? You may go to the directory under Finder and double click the picture to open it with 'Preview'.

I've been using Yosemite and while not perfect I never had the issue you describe. It seems a clean install is the recommendation being issued quite often when running into serious performance issues.

Glad that you sorted it out though :)
