Okay, I caved. I ordered the 8gb 1tb model to see if this new 8 GB base is workable. (I know about the future.) If I get any hiccups over the next week, it's going back for a 16 GB model.

Beauty of Apple’s extended holiday return window. Definitely get a feel for the 8GB. Put it through its paces.

Well it’s official. I’m coming from a Late 2013 15” Retina MBP 32GB RAM, 500GB SSD to a 2023 16” M3 MBP MAX 128GB RAM, 4TB SSD. What a jump! Anything special I should know or do when I get it? I’ll be setting it up as a new machine as I wiped my one.

A lot of screens come with micro damage. Shine a flashlight on it, if you have one escalate to Apple.

Just do the things you normally do with it. Don't try and find limits and you will probably be happy with it.

Sold my 15" MBA to get the M3. Picking up my 16gb/1tb model later today. Very excited (esp. about the improved battery life).

You certainly maxed out your M3 Max.

May I ask your use case for this beast?
I did indeed. I'm a composer for film and television. I've always wanted to be able to be mobile and work, but my typical project eats up around 100gb of ram. This new m3 Max with 128gb is the bare minimum required to compose outside of my studio. Hope it works! I'm hopefully replacing a maxed out Mac Studio.

Just got my 16GB/1TB M3. Still testing out the battery life. There's clearly a performance difference from the 15 MBA I had. What I don't know is how much difference (+/-) the battery is. I'd be open to the M3 Pro but I'm trying to get the best battery life possible outside of the Air.

Got my 16" M3 Max in space black delivered today. I went with the 14-core, 36GB/1TB. Decided to finally consolidate and get rid of the two 16s that I had (a 2019 i9, and a 2021 M1 Pro). I am keeping the 13-inch M1 because I run macOS beta's on it. Once the M3 (or whatever) is out for the Mac Studio, I will probably pick one up to replace my iMac Pro (that machine is used for my work).

I went with the M3 (not Pro) but upped the configuration to 16gb/1tb. So far after a few days, I'm very impressed. The battery life has been rather ridiculous. It seems to be getting better battery life than the 15" MacBook air.

What I hope will be a Wicked Fast Mac is on the way (yes, I'm enough of a dinosaur to remember the old IIfx and use its tagline)... M3 Max 16/40, 64 Gb, 8 TB in Space Black. They say it'll arrive by March 4 (being shipped to an Apple store because I live very close to New Hampshire, which doesn't have sales tax). What's people's experience with Apple's shipping dates? I wonder if it may ship early, or do all CTOs take three weeks or so?

Custom builds do take longer. From my experience Apple's dates on CTO's are pretty much right on.

What does "Processing" mean on a CTO? Is it "we're building your computer"? Or is it still hung up a step before that? Mine has been stuck in "Processing" for over a week. If it's "we're building your computer", that's expected - the machine has a three week delivery date. If it's "we haven't sent your order to the factory yet", that's more worrisome. I don't see a "building" stage in between "processing" and "shipping to store" (I'm picking it up at an Apple Store in an adjacent state to save sales tax).

I just ordered a 16” M3 Max 16/40/128 with an 8Tb drive. I bought the first 16” Intel MacBook Pro about five years ago, and it is becoming a bit long in the tooth. I have found that, for me, buying a top of the line computer (I do quantitive analysis as a professor) and then keeping it for as long as I can tends to give me the most bang for the buck.
