firewire dying?

but I still can't see how so many people say that firewire is fading away.
what's the basis for that?
I have even seen reports of FW1600 coming out next year. Whether it's true or not, I don't know, but it seems viable.

Chips for FW1600 in production, but end user products slow in coming out.

FW3200 in prototyping for just as long, but yet to hear of any chips.

USB is popular simply because of "Advertising", be it commercials or word of mouth.

FW is not becuase Sony at first standardizes (and other PC makers followed) on the *non-power* 4 pin FW connector, which meant things like "flash drives" would not work (it is slowly switching to the 6 pin).
THEN Microsoft screwed over PC FW users with a bad WinXP patch that (on purpose?) caused FW to run at its slowest speed.
ON top of that, FW800 drivers for XP released very late.

Even though USB3 is completely different, by calling it USB they create the perception it is USB (compatibility is created by a USB2 sub-circuit included with main circuit).

Well what do you know!

Intel DELAYS USB 3.0 OVER 1 year, to some undisclosed period in 2011!

http://www.techtree.com/India/News/No_USB_30_for_Intel_Chipsets_till_2011_Nvidia/551-107322-581.html

I would not say its good news for the industry, but it clearly shows Apple is a fool to think FW is dying and pull it from the MacBook, again!

Actually, I think it's not because of USB that Firewire's being slowly killed off, it's more likely because of LightPeak. It's also possible that Intel delayed USB 3.0 because they wanted to try to push LightPeak first.

That is absurd.

You don't kill off one product before its replacement is solidly in place.

I read up on LightPeak, and the interesting part is, it is protocol independent. USB, Ethernet, FireWire, etc.

I am not sure if it has its own protocol or uses the parts of the one its connected by....

Would you like usb3 with your MBP?

In 2008 Apple asked: "Can MacBook without FireWire be called Pro?"
In 2009 Apple knew the answer and FW came back to MBP.

In 2009 Apple asked "Can MacBook without ExpressCard be called Pro?"

If you have MBP with expresscard you can buy usb3 (or eSata) card from 3rd party for $40.
If you have MBP with sd-card reader you can buy new MBP with usb3 in sometime next year for $2000.
They really hit the goldmine!

January 2010 CES in Las Vegas showcases the first consumer available USB3 devices.

Seagate with USB3 portable drive:

And a laptop with USB3

I predict USB 3.0 will allow me to connect USB devices to my computer.

The Magic 8 Ball says "Most likely"

But will you get the magic USB3 speeds?

Everyone can say they can connect FW400 device to a FW800 port and get FW400 speeds from it.

Exactly, Light Peak is twice as fast as USB 3.0, is protocol independent, can handle data, video, and audo with huge bandwidth, uses fibre optics instead of cable and offers an all-in-one solution to existing cable formats. Currently at 10 GBps, light peak has potential to reach 100 GBps with further development. Apple has been pushing Intel to develop it instead of USB 3.0.

I think it's a more elegant method of connectivity, with potential to become a more universal and longer lasting standard. There would be no Light Peak 2.0 etc, and no need to upgrade mobos, chips, ports on cases, etc. every few years.

It is also very early. Lets not hang on the dreams but wait for real stats (I am not discounting it, just not doing back flips until I see more)

Really, where you hear that??

PREDICTION: First Mac product with USB3

MacBook Air!
That single USB2 port is hack job by Apple to make it work with SuperDrive, and for wired backup is a poor choice.

USB3 will go far to address that, well, stupid idea of Apples.
