I've kinda jumping on the Kaby Lake and Cannonlake wait. My rMB is going strong. Quad core is overkill.

The reason I change my mind from rMB to rMBP it's I'm afraid about the A9X. I still think Core M is faster but A9X wouldn't be far behind. Quad-Core still a long way to go.
And sometimes I have to do some high performance work too

A9X is designed for a different line of apps and another OS. Like comparing cheese with giraffes. Sometimes doesn't justify going quad core. Future proofing is like buying a tent for your bedroom.
Yeah I've heard that from an engineer.
I was talking about Spec2006, which "simulates" most common situations for today, I think the point is who can be faster if they are running similar software and doing similar tasks. A9X shows that it's good enough.
For "quad-core", I mean A9X still far behind the high-end i7 (a quad core and 8 threads)

I just hope the waiting does not turn out like the Mac Mini 2014 (people predicting a release since nearly 2 years prior).

I think what happened with Mac Mini, MBP and the rest was that Apple was waiting for TB3, and when it was apparent that TB3 will come early 2016 they gave a mediocre update into their computers. I genuinely think we may expect a pretty big revamp in their lineup of hardware with new "view" of it.

External GPUs, 4K and 5K Thunderbolt Displays, etc, etc...

So you think we won't get a redesign until 2017?

No, Im not the one who is interested in MBP redesign, or MBP at any level right now. Im just saying what is my opinion on events before. I think Apple did not changed their hardware lineup dramatically before TB3 would be released.

Apple has always picked the highest end integrated CPU versions of Intel chips for its 15" MBPs, starting with the mid-2010 model which was the first to hold a chip with Intel graphics on board.

The story for 13" is a bit different. In 2010 it had just a dGPU (GeForce 320M), but from 2011 it joined lockstep with 15" in iGPU, until late 2013 when Apple started using Iris graphics for 13" but stuck to Iris Pro for 15"

Listing all refreshes for both 13" and 15" :

Mid 2010: Arrandale with Intel HD graphics (only option). Only 15"/17".
Early 2011: Sandybridge with Intel HD Graphics 3000 (Sandybridge chips sold with HD Graphics, HD Graphics 2000 and HD Graphics 3000). All models.
Late 2011 : Sandybridge update, still with HD 3000. All Models.
Mid 2012 : Ivybridge with Intel HD Graphics 4000 (Ivybridge sold with HD Graphics, HD 2500 and HD 4000). 15" only.
Late 2012 : Ivybridge update, still with HD 4000. 13" only.
Early 2013 : Ivybridge update, still with HD 4000. All Models.
Late 2013 : Haswell with Iris Pro 5200 for 15", Iris 5100 for 13" (Haswell was offered with HD Graphics, HD 4000/4200/4600, Iris 5000, Iris 5100 and the top of line Iris Pro 5200)
Mid 2014: Haswell update, still Iris Pro 5200 for 15", Iris 5100 for 13"
Early 2015 : Broadwell with Iris 6100 (Broadwell was offered with HD Graphics, HD 5300/5500/5600/6000, Iris 6100 and the top of line Iris Pro 6200). 13" only
Mid 2015 : Haswell update, still with Iris Pro 5200. 15" only

Skylake graphics: this new processor comes with the following graphics options:
HD Graphics 510, 515, 520, 530, Iris 540, Iris 550 and Iris Pro 580
Generation:
510 = GT1
515/520/530 = GT2
Iris 540/550 = GT3e (eDRAM of 64MB)
Iris Pro 580 = GT4e (eDRAM of 128MB)

Based on past record, 15" will get Iris Pro 580, while 13" will probably get the Iris 540 (550 is the same as 540, but with higher clock and TDP, which will probably mean it won't get into 13")

No Iris 540/550 or Iris Pro 580 based Skylake chips have as yet been released. All of those released so far are upto 530 . To know when Skylake MBPs will be out, look for the release of 540/550/580 based chips.

Update: Looks like at least one processor with Iris 540 is out, but none at all with Iris Pro 580 . Until that is out, there will be no 15" . Apple probably wants to update both 13" and 15" at once.

Would they got a immediately release after the chip is released?

Iris Pro 550 = 540 with more higher clock. That's true, thank you HighRes15! Also the difference must be insignificant between them.

But 540 is allready released since i7-6650U (Surface Book) so maybe they are waiting for 550 on the rMBP13

...

If the redesign it's not happening until 5k thunderbol display support it's here, then it won't be a redesign until 2017 Caby Lake, which will lead to a 2016 Skylake version of the same actual body, maybe even without USB-C like they did with the iMac. I hope not, because that would be a pain in the ass.

Agreed.
Another thing I wasn't for sure, will the redesign take a longer time? What happened in the previous generation?

The i7-6650U with Iris 540 in the Surface Book is a 15W part. Historically, Apple picks more powerful chips for 13"

The i5-3230M Ivybridge in Early 2013 was 35W
The i5-4258U Haswell in Late 2013 was 28W
The i5-4278U Haswell in Mid 2014 was 28W
The i5-5257U Broadwell in the current early 2015 is 28W configurable down to 23W

Skylake has the i7-6567U which has Iris 550 and is a 28W TDP chip. As far as I can tell, it is not out though Intel lists it as out Q3 2015. There's clearly no Iris Pro 580 out yet either.

I can't speak for the redesign - I'm only looking at the processor here.

If I'm not wrong... with small design polish details between years it has been like that:

2006 first model

2008 new design (2 years from last)

2012 "new" retina design (3 years from last)

2016 ?¿?¿

It's time to make something here! I would be happy with something like the rMB => color options, no backlight logo, keyboard edge to edge, speaker edge to edge and no plastic thing for the screen on the upcoming rMBP. But who knows...

And the gold for sure.
I do hope so, but the iMac has nothing new for too long though, and it just released this year.

As far as I can tell, there is no "Iris Pro 550" . Only an Iris 550 . In the past 2 generations, Intel only has has one Pro graphics model at the top end, and one or more Iris graphics below it, with HD graphics at the bottom tier. For skylake, the Pro tier is Iris Pro 580 .

I doubt we're seeing a redesign this year. Although I agree it's probably about time. I'd think next year would be it. Depends on what their next objective is with a redesign (TB3, new 'lightning with audio' coming to iPhone next year, removal of HDMI, USB-C, etc.). Keep in mind, it's not just about a "fresh new look", it's also about ports and stuff. Apple is very systematic, they just don't say "oh hey - it's about time to change the design, let's shuffle a couple ports around and change the look".

Can anyone shed some light on what Skylake allows manufactures' to do when compared to Broadwell? Thinner, smaller, anything that would allow for more room in chassis, etc?
