For some reason I have extreme slowdowns with Safari although I don't have that many windows open (app. 10). The activity monitor shows me a cpu usage of about 85 % for the app and I get the spinning beachball for about a minute or more.
My machine is a 1.25 Ghz Powerbook with 1.25 GB Ram, Mac Os X 10.4.7.
Also it seems that the problem occurs more often after I wake the book up from sleep.

Is that behaviour common?

It depends on the sites you visit really. I have no problems with Safari but I don't visit sites with much Flash and I occasionally follow the advice of this guide. What sites are giving you this slow down? :)
