Also, this is the highest PPI screen Apple has ever shipped. Much easier to slip in a few video sensors in a screen that dense, huh?

I didn't really think the patent was possible untill I read about the SED TVs, "It's essentially a flat-panel television that uses millions of CRTs instead of one electron gun.", really cool but expensive and not even out yet....

Whats the time limit for a patent? I really have trouble seeing it being produced anytime soon.

YouTube isn't just fun. Its everything. Its not like theres some kind of content blocker on there that only allows tasteless fun... You can find interesting, enlightening, tasteful, and educational content on YouTube. I think you are the one that needs to think "outside the box" as it were.

Everything? I don't think I see any pornographic content on there... ... ...

(;) :D)

Anyone know what the size of the file is?
it seems to be taking for ever to download

I don't know the file size, but shouldn't take all that long. I started the download, went into the next room to get a drink, came back and it was done.

The elite few that have received their iPhones seemingly guard it with their lives. The iPhone has been in an incredibly small amount of number of hands in comparison to the release of just about any techno-gadget I can think of before it goes on sale to the masses. Secrecy, even at less than ten days, is paramount, and there is still so, so much we do not know about the iphone.

I just find it difficult to believe, as incredible as the iPhone already is, and I emphasize that I think it is indeed incredible, that there aren't a few more surprises waiting to be released. I really think there are a couple of "One more thing(s).." to be mentioned.

I thought the extended battery life and glass touch plate was a nice eleventh hour announcement, and now YouTube at 11:58.

Is there anyone out there that really, truly believes that there will be NO MORE surprises between now and the 29th? (I know there doesn't need to be any more, but I think there will be at least one more...maybe a biggie.)

I love the speculation about an iSight camera facing the user while looking at the touchscreen. (Yes, a second camera other that the 2MP on the back.) Could it be the home button? (Fingerprints...nah, they wouldn't bother an isight much, would they, wipe it off during preview.)

If an isight...here are some apps I would love to see:

1) PhotoBooth on your iPhone (Who wouldn't want that. Lots of fun!)
2) Video iChat (The big crowd pleaser.)
3) YouTube Upload (capture live video & upload to your YouTube account)

;)

Actually one thing I know for a "FACT" (don't ask for source) Is an AIM Widget will be on the iPhone on Launch date. Most will just get pushed out on June 29th after purchase, through "over-the-air" update. This will include AIM (Not Web 2.0 or HTML/Java based) It will be an actual Widget. And as of MSN Messenger and Yahoo that will be out "one week" after the June 29th release date. But the good thing is at least AIM will be out on June 29th and as a widget. Same with MSN and Yahoo Messengers, they will both be widgets also. So for all those concerned about the iPhone lacking "iChat" they will have it.

I was curious to read the Yahoo news report today stating the IPhone will be the first phone able to access You Tube. Might just be inaccurate reporting. I can think of at least four easy ways of watching You Tube on almost any phone. tinytube dot net converts them to the universal 3GP streaming format (and a player is built into virtually every phone made now... unless carriers actively disable them - do they? There is the official m.youtube dot com (best way to go). There is wap dot mymobileclips dot com. Also, on Windows Mobile and probably Palm OS devices, the kissyoutube download site followed by playback with the TCPMP player with the FLV plugin (Unneccessarily laborous, but it is yet another option)

None of thse solutions even require 3G. EDGE is fine. I am bit puzzled and did wonder if core media software is being removed from some carrier phones. Most likely it was just sloppy reporting though... any knowledge on this?

It had been reported that the IPhone will not support the Flash plugin. Some Mobile browsers like Opera and Netfront support Flash to a greater extent than Windows Mobile, but none can stream You Tube via Flash. Actually, You Tube Flash downloads are progressive, not streaming (you cannot drag to part of the video not has not yet been downloaded. It is download to buffer then start playing, not steam as you go) They are not on a true streaming Flash server anyway.

The 3GP variants are true streaming formats though. You can watch them on,for instance a Moto Rzr today.

I feel I must be missing something here. That or the reporters are not well informed about existing streaming media.

In itself You Tube on a phone is in no way new. All will be revealed on the 29th I guess! I will not be in line. For 500 bucks plus I expect GPS, broadband, VoIP and several other features missing from the IPhone (and already have them all already) My current phone has a second camera for live person to person video calls. Unfortunately there is no sign of that as carrier feature in the US at this time on any phone, I can only use them in Europe.

In regard to iChat (runs in AOL AIM servers), although this is not elegant one can currently logon via text message from any SMS enabed phone. The iPhone will not be an exception. Some of ATT PDA plans come with 1500 messages per mth anyway, It is hard to get through that many whatever your do.

With my SDHC slot I now have a 4GB storage card and cards up to 32GB are in the works.

Plus there is no way I am signing two year contract for any phone. Ever!

Ultra slick interface. Fir sure, Likely to completely unrivaled. Absolutely and for sure.

New features? As in, not at possible on any other phone in any way even if less elegant. Only thing that has been annouced is the multi-point sensitive screen. That is a first. It is the only first announced. Other new features? So far as we know at this point, exactly zero. Without regard to style the raw specs are unimpressive...

m.youtube aside, it's the first non-hacky "official" Youtube on a mobile phone. m.youtube is a bit of a weaker implementation than Apple's: Apple's actually improves the quality (if the source is high quality), rather than degrading it. Also, m.youtube is brand new, so I think people are just lumping the two together. So technically you are right, but technically you could also say that the iPhone Youtube is just part of a larger mobile youtube effort that is indeed the first official implementation of youtube on mobile devices.

So you're European (or at least spend a lot of time there)? You represent a fairly persistent new category of internet commenter: Europeans who complain about the US release of the iPhone. I don't mean to sound rude, but the cell phone markets are vastly different between the US and Europe so I'd expect the iPhone that gets released in Europe to differ than the model we're getting next week (3G is a must for Europe, for starters). I don't think there's any point to complaining from a European perspective about the US iPhone. MOST ALL of our phones and servcies suck comapred to Europe.

GPS is somewhat cool but overrated in my opinion (most people aren't lost most of the time and can easily type their rough location into Google maps. Also, the US is very heavily "marked" compared to Europe: much harder to be lost in the US). I expect some sort of GPS dock-connector plug-in for the iPhone right now (like the Nike+ kit) and that it will be built-in to the next major revison of the phone (this time next year, probably). By "broadband" I assume you mean 3G: American networks suck and very little of the country has 3G coverage. VoIP is again a somewhat rare feature as at least some cell phone carrieres actively block such capability from phones. I don't know what "several other features" you need that the iPhone isn't giving you.

Yeah, the IM thing should be easy to workaround, but I expect a full-fledged IM app (like iChat) on the phone fairly soon. This shouldn't be a problem.

With my SDHC slot I now have a 4GB storage card and cards up to 32GB are in the works.

Yes, but those cards are very expensive. And swapping them back and forth on the go isn't the most convenient thing. Apple's model has always been onboard storage only (a la iPod). It's a different philosophy: whether you like one better than the other is more preference than anything.

Plus there is no way I am signing two year contract for any phone. Ever!

Well, in America you have 2 options: sign up with a contract or pay out the ass. It's starting to change a bit with prepaid options, but for the most part the only economically viable way to get a decent phone is to get a contract. The iPhone is expensive even with a contract, but still not as bad as say an unlocked N95.

Ultra slick interface. Fir sure, Likely to completely unrivaled. Absolutely and for sure.

Yes, that's really the main selling point of the phone. The second being that it's a really slick iPod as well as a phone.

New features? As in, not at possible on any other phone in any way even if less elegant. Only thing that has been annouced is the multi-point sensitive screen. That is a first. It is the only first announced. Other new features? So far as we know at this point, exactly zero. Without regard to style the raw specs are unimpressive...

The iPhone is not about having more "features", just as the iPod is not about having more features. To understand Apple's philosophy you have to realize that to Apple sometimes NOT having a feature IS a feature. It's about having a *great* interface for the features people really want (people being most people, not corporate users or tech-geeks or other niches) and not cluttering things with unnecesary complications. That said, you discount the interface: a sophisticated touch screen capable of gesture recognition and multiple inputs IS a new feature and a very big deal as it changes the users fundamental interaction with the phone. This is why people dismissing the iPhone because "touch screens suck" are near-sighted: this touch-screen is really a different beast. It's like saying all GUIs suck because you tried Windows 2.0 once and it wasn't so great. The iPhone is attempting to be *the* breakthrough for touch-interfaces that brings them as mainstream as the mouse and keyboard. If they succeed, it's a big deal.

Specs and bullet-points a great product does not make.

is edge fast enough to stream youtube content? this sounds like a feature that would require wifi. i wonder, though, if one can record/store youtube content on the iphone. overall, good news.

3G is needed if this wants to work in UK :)

I tried it on the :apple: tv last night, and the YouTube really works well. Nice interface. The download was kind of long, with a bunch of restarts, but once it's done, it's very nice. The quality of the videos was better than I was expecting- it was acceptable most of the time. A few pixelated ones, but I imagine the source file must have been VGA camera phone or something on those. The searching is a little clunky with having to scroll to each letter, but then again usually you're just inputting one or two words. Nifty how the background becomes an opaque version of the video frame when the video is paused and the menu pops up. Even brings up related videos as options to watch when the current video finishes, just like on regular YouTube. Apple and YouTube did a good job implementing this.
