I recently picked up a panasonic sdr-s10, it's perfect for the youtube generation. It's shock and shower proof the big plus is no moving parts it writes to sdhc cards. The quality is mediocre but it does 16/9. Keep an eye on the panasonics i remember Stevie had a nice little HD panasonic on the keynote so that's definitely recommended. However the little sdr-s10 is priced well for an entry level basic rugged setup.

Brewno, I just bought the same camera, but it doesn't appear to be Mac compatible. The MacBook doesn't even acknowledge it's there -- any suggestions?

It is Mac compatible. I used it on my MacBook Pro. It took a while for the computer to recognize it, but it did. I just had to wait a minute or so, it was probably recognizing the hardware or something.
I used a firewire cable (obviously) and it was not using the battery, I think.
Makes iMovie ('06) recognize it and record movies at 640x480 - which was good for me back then.
I moved from Europe, so I sold it. I'm now looking forward to buy this one.
