If I had a Mercedes, it would have to be black, black is sleak!

I have owned more cars then you can imagine and I know more about then you know. We are talking about the Basic series from MB right there. nothing fancy. nothing sports natured, unlike lets say a 3 series but even at that point, we are talkin about 80's units.
this is no offence to the original poster. to each his own with his units and im a Euro nut fan, so nothing against you bro, you will love your cars :) and appreciate them too ^_^

oh no, no hostily meant...:) I just got the impression that because it's an 80's vehicle, it must be no good.
Me? I'm partial to the older 500SL. I also like the 300D turbo diesel. Nothing like fresh diesel exhaust in the morning :D
And 165k miles for an '83 diesel isn't that much at all. Probably no more than 1/4 the life of the drivetrain, provided it's been well maintained.

No, because it's an 80s vehicle with 167-200,000 miles on it, its not going to be expensive or anything spectacular. Except for people who think the Mercedes logo is worth 70,000 dollars alone.

an older mercerdes can be an incredible deal, even with load of miles, provided that you know how to work on a car (or have a good mechanic)- and have a cheap parts source (radiators usually start to go, not cheap to replace most times)

I just have a thing against Mercedes (owners) since it seems so many of them think that car entitles them to be a$$holes to everyone around them.
But it could just be I come in contact with the worst of people with my job :(

judging people based on what they drive/how they look etc. can be a dangerous thing to do...
that said... i think i hate most SUV drivers in DC- if it can't fit in to a normal parking space and driving lane, leave it at home... are you really going to off-road in the city? please... ;) :D

i personally think i dont have enough gray hair to drive a Mercedes. I love my 550i, maybe i'm just a BMW guy but i think mercs are for old over the hill doctors/lawyers that are trying to pick up some 18 year old blonde.
I was never a fan of Mercs though...

Hi!
I am soooooo sorry, but I own one! It is a 2-year old (from new) SLK230 Kompressor, 11000 miles on the clock. Totally black - metallic black body, black tinted windows, black leather electric seats, black maple wood trim, low-profile tyres, six-spoke ally wheels, sat-nav, etc. blah blah blah, and it goes --- well, it goes soooo fast that I reckon it is nearly as fast as this very fast and impressive G4 Powerbook that I use to type this reply. I drove it across Germany (to Denmark) when it was new to see just how fast it would go. It went off the clock at 165mph (supposed to be regulated at 155mph and I wondered if I should complain to Mercedes - thought better of it) and it was soooo rock-solid. Deep joy all the way, especially with the power-roof folded down. Until ---- until I was overtaken, at speed, by a bunch of Porsches and Ferraris going at a squillion mph or more. Whatever; driving around in it is better than sex any day - even if the sex is very very dirty.
Ummmm. So why do you want to know?

I always wondered why Mercedes didn't ship over their cheap models to the US - the ones that were closer to 20,000 euros. I personally don't think they are worth 80,000 or whatever people spend on them, except for the social status it is viewed as by some.

That's right, my 1979 W107 (450sl) costed me $10k when I bought it in 1999, I sold it for $10k in 2002.

My family has a W210 E240 and an E39 540i. I know that there is a significant difference in engine sizes, but the 5-Series is just a better car in almost every respect. That isn't to say that the Mercedes is a bad car though.
Here are some pictures of the E-Class

You can get one south of the border ;-) i bought an A160 2000 six months ago and, even if they are not a REAL Mercedes, i've found it quite better than my previous Jetta, and believe me, that's something good. I've heard somewhere that the new B-Class will be sold in the States.

I wouldn't call myself a fan-boy (Id much rather get myself a '91 J-Plate Golf Mark II GTi 16v) but I do drive my Dad's from time to time. I placed the order for him - and chose the 'spec :)
2001 E240 (2597cc model) Mercs are heavy - always order at least a V6 under your right foot!!

I had 2, but have since sold:
'93 300E
'98 AMG C43
The AMG was unbelievable...tempermental; however, a complete rocket. Fast, comfortable - nothing better for (quickly) eating-up the miles on the highway. Also, it was a complete sleeper - very few hints it was a modded car. And only something like 1,100 +/- were imported to the US - I onl saw 1 other C43 live during the 3 yrs I owned it.
Still have German cars, just not MB's anymore...
BTW, the late 80's/early 90's diesels are absolute workhorses (between the diesel engines and workmanship of the time).

Not a huge fan, but a pseudo-Mercedes that impresses is the MacLaren-Mercedes SLR. I saw two of them pull up at opposite sides of an intersection in South Ken a few days ago. It must suck to pay that much for a very rare car and then to see one in exactly the same spec across the street.

Blasphemy! ;)
heh, I am like you too, I have owned and sold many cars by now. I am actually looking at a low budget Disel, but I think it will be a TDI, as the price is good, and so is cost of keeping it on the road.
Those Mercedes cars are great, a friend of mine ice races his, and uses it as a winter car. With good snow tires, and some Ballast weight, they handle quite well in the snow, and also have great heat!
You won't find 840quadra on that site, I go by something else in the automotive forums I frequent :) .

hmm..well I kinda do..
My older brother had one (SLK, W-reg, 2000 i think) in metallic blue. He's switched cars so it's mine now (although I haven't bothered learning how to drive yet so it's pretty useless for me)..
It's in the garage right now but here's a pic from a couple of months ago:

They were built to a standard, not a price.

I'd agree with that, we had a 190E and an E-Class back in the '80's and the build quality were very, very good... much better than the BMW's of the day for example (for periods we also had an E30 320i and an E28 528i) which were about as well screwed together as Fords of the same era.
That said, the new A-Class would suggest that Mercedes are trying to return to the good old days, amazingly well screwed together... with almost Audi levels of attention to materials.

lol well a half million dollar deal fell through with my family and we have accumulated much more debt than that
so at that time money was extramly tight
then the deal was reestablished and set back on terms (still havent gotten $$ yet)
do you have any more personal family questions
but one day i saw this beaust sitting in a used car lot (the 83 300d)
so we kept oging back and asking question and finally i told my father that i was going to buy it then he was like sure just be prepaird to pay around 1500 or more
so we get a price $812 with tax and title included so the next day i hanf them cash and wallah i have a car
now its in the repair shop and getting $300-500 worth of work done

Amazing Cars. My parents 79 has pretty much just had oil/tire changes in its entire lifetime. Last month it got new valve covers. Even the interior has held up all these years. Just goes to show what getting past the kids in the house stage will do!

I had a 300D for a brief period back in January/early February, but the transmission acted funny and it had other little misc. quirks, so I sold it because I was afraid it would end up being a money pit. I loved it, though. I'd like to eventually get another one. I love diesels!
Here's some pics of it. It only had like 127,000 miles on it.
