Hey arn,
I dont know if I am the only one, but I think it is time for a new forum/site design/update. The grey-ish background with the BIG text ads on top and on bottom are not very appealing. Also, I think we should give the logo a little work...it looks like clip-art. Definately at least make it a bit "aqua-ey!"
If you need some help with the redesign, contact me somehow or another, and I will be glad to help for free.

You know what? I think it's fine... more than fine. Aqua is so yesterday. This site is designed for legibility IMO.
And the logo? It's a good piece of work.
But what do I know? I'm just a designer.

No,
I dont mean "exactly" aqua, just more shiny, and apple like. It is like a generic apple, and apples are FAR from generic. if yolu want generic get a dell

If you think that this site will be improved by some shiny surfaces, I think you're completely missing the point about legibility and usability. This site does not have a 'grey' background and to call the logo 'clipart' betrays a lack of knowledge about logo design.
However, if I have one unasked-for criticism, it would be that the forum section headings (i.e. Mac Hardware, Mac Software etc.) are a little lost on the main forums page. They could do with a little more emphasis to more clearly delineate the separate sections.

I actually really like the logo :)
As for a general site redesign, I don't have any plans. I could tweak some things here and there and tighten things up a bit, but that's the extent.
I do think the icons/smilies could use some brushing up. I'm just using the vbulletin default. I've looked around but the icons I've seen elsewhere haven't been that inspiring either.

Since we are talking about the logo anyway...
I was trying to modify the logo to turn it into an icon, so I could bookmark this site in my dock using the logo.
All I really did to it was make the background transparent, but for some reason it still shows the white. :(

What did I do wrong? (The attached image is the icon I tried making)

I'm not huge into site design, so don't kill me for saying this:
I think i've been to other v bulletin sites where you can hover over a post with your mouse and get a quick preview of the original post. I know more than a few people would object to this as a default, but could it be an option or something?

On behalf of modem users - there's nothing more annoying than waiting 30-60 seconds for a page to load because a few goofballs throw 20 animated smileys in their posts. This is currently a very modem-friendly site.

Maybe...
It could be an option, to animate smileys or not. (just like displaying signatures is optional)
For those that disabled animation, the smiley would still show up, but it just wouldn't move.

Another vBulletin site I recently joined is http://www.panthershuddle.com/forum/... for whatever reason, they have ALL of the bells and whistles turned on: Images in sigs (which is BAD), a galaxy of smilies (many of which are animated), reputation (which Arn turned on VERY briefly a little while back... you can give "rep" to someone for a good post... or you can take it away for a bad one), custom user titles (contributors can specify their own titles), hovering previews of posts, etc.
However, doing all that makes the site MUCH less readable. And, their site only has about 10% of the traffic of this site.
I like things the way they are, although I do like the custom titles option.

I love the site and the forums the way they are...
Best bits:
- Logo
- Overall appearance
- Forums very easy to read
- Tight control of forum options keeps everything looking smooth
- Use of tabs
- Regular updates
- 'Tell it like it is' style
- Guides
However from reading this forum, some things I like the idea of...
- Forum navigation pull down menu
- More static smilies (not animated)
A few of my ideas...
- Make the home page less 'full'. Sometimes feels like information overload.
- A new poll every day.
- Interactive play mate :D
How about these? :D

Hmm, looking at them again, I think you're right. I was trying to keep them in vague apple-like colours (i.e. either a shade of red or green) but I think the ones we have already (as well as the colours communicating) are instantly recognisable by the colour, before you see the expression.

Speaking of animated smiles where is a good place to download some nice ones.

How do you do blinking text? In ad email?? can you do that?
It's a .gif, you see when you right click on it and select "Save Image to ".
Test blinking text.
<blink>Test blinking text again.</blink>
At least it is not included in the BBS software.
Btw, how did you come upon this four year old thread?
