And that glossy screen sucks ass - I wouldn't buy one solely on that problem alone.

I would have to keep taking fioricets at ten minute intervals to actually use the machine :P

Seems i may have to get a Revision A MBP in a year if they make all their laptops have the glossy screen

Or i can show them my medical history and ask for a special order.

Roger is hot...

I really like the new looks - they did a nice job, and honestly, this will be a kick butt for anyone who doesn't use Photoshop. For now. :D

I like how the keyboard is kind of recessed in. I wonder if the RAM is still under the keyboard, or if they moved it to the bottom?

Pretty screen for watching movies or working in low light. That'll be a bitch out in the daylight, or a normal office setting.

Oh, and that Roger guy? I'd hit it.:p not;)

From what I've heard, the RAM is now at the bottom.

Also of note.. the mic. is now next to the iSight, and the speakers.. where the frack have they gone? :p

God that screen is NICEI even with gloss. I guess i'll stick it out with my iBook with out gloss, buy a iMac merom and be forced to buy a glossy apple laptop when my iBook can't run an OS with all the eye candy extra:rolleyes:

If they were up your arse you'd know where they were. :p

I'd start this reply by pointing out that Roger is hot, but the rest of it would probably get censored. :o

I guess the logical guess would be that the speakers are mounted under the keyboard? Don't some of the PBs/MBPs have speakers under the keyboard? Not that they've ever had a keyboard like this one, about which hot Roger refuses to comment. :D And not that they've ever ONLY had speakers under there.

I got the chance! On a MacBookPro, at least...

I hated it. I guess I'm so used to the iBook keyboard that my brain is wired a different way, but the spaces in between the keys really threw me off. I kept hitting the keys next to the ones I meant to hit. It was a total mess.

no im with you here. i think i looks a tadge childish. its like having big rounded buttons! i dont see why they just didnt put in a MBP/PB keyboard and set it back a bit. it is the best keyboard on a laptop i have ever used.

Yes, glossy lips, not screens. :D

I think the current iBook keyboard had a big learning curve for me, but that once I eventually got used to it, I found myself having trouble with other keyboards. Looks like now I'm eventually going to have to play that game again?

P.S. You know that, now that Mac Head has made a Rogertar, there is basically zero chance that Roger will ever come back, right? *sobs* :( :D

Hey I'm Roger's roommate. That's my account that the pics of Roger's new Macbook are posted under.

I'll tell you all: You have no idea how inflated Roger's ego has become from all this positive attention.

Anyway, here's a picture of him without a shirt on:

And the rest of the photos of him in my photostream are here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pealco/tags/roger/). Now, please go ahead and turn this into a massive internet meme, thanks.

PS: If you have any Macbook-related question for him, ask and I'll forward them on.

I HATE the glossy screens. That was one of the things I couldn't stand about PC laptops...

I feel like I have to say he's hot at the start of my post...

Going 100% shiny is an interesting tack. Most wintel manufacturers still offer the option of low gloss screens yeah? I'm all for whiter, brighter (and while I'm at it, better larger gamut please) screens, but I'm wondering how these new shiny screens will work in color critical jobs?

Just another reason to suck it up and grab a MBP (for me at least).

Still, wicked consumer laptop. I'd get one if I could affor a desktop workstation in addition (in both cost and space).

May 16, 2006, 08:45 PM

Nobody has ever looked so good standing next to a computer until Roger came into our lives.

I'm going to visit the Apple Store and check those puppies out, I'll probably see Roger on the box for the MacBook because Apple thought he was so hot.

After seeing some in person in Chicago today, I gotta say, the screen really isn't too shabby. I thought I would hate the glossiness, but it's not extremely glossy like some of the PC laptops out there, and it's pretty sharp. We tried running some full-screen movie trailers on it, and they looked great. I need to go find $1000 somewhere now...

It's a fine looking machine, but I just can't get over the fact that I prefer my iBook more than the MacBook.

The black is nice, though. I loved the Powerbooks when they were black, but I somehow prefer my white iBook and the keyboard. I'll have to go and try out the MacBook at an Apple store to see if I'm willing enough to sell my iBook and buy a MacBook.

And looking at all these pictures is putting Bon Echo to the test. And it's working fine so far!.

I love the glossy screens. I remember going into Circuit City a few months ago and seeing PC laptops with them and going "WOW, that screen looks great!"

The black one looks great. (the white is nice, too.) I even like the looks of it more than the MacBook Pro. They are a huge improvement over the iBook, IMO.

Keep the pics coming.

The design of this macbook is really slick. It looks like one molded piece of plastic, very well rounded off.

How about those speakers, where the frack are they?

Has anyone tried using this in Aperture or Photoshop (for example correcting the white balance) in a classic work lighting situation.

Is the screen any good?

Believe it or not (stupid as this sounds) it's the security "system" they have on these models, it's glued to the top case, but plugged in via USB. They don't use the security lock, so it'd be easy to walk out of there with one :p.

So if you unplug it an alarm sounds and the iBook takes a pic of your mug.
Then the Apple thugs (like that big black guy in the Roger pics) take you out.

Believe it or not (stupid as this sounds) it's the security "system" they have on these models, it's glued to the top case, but plugged in via USB. They don't use the security lock, so it'd be easy to walk out of there with one :p.
I'm not so sure about that. Link (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=201740).

Is that a 12" iBook? Cuz if it is I would be very gratefull if you would take some pictures comparing their size and design. The thing is that I right now have a 12" ibook that I got last tuesday which means that I have until tuesday next week to find out wheter or not I want to return this for a Macbook, the problem is size, I really don't want a laptop much bigger then my ibook.

Or if someone else have pictures of a 12" ibook and a macbook I would very much like to see them.

DKS, the 13.3" is a totally different form factor than the 12" because its wide screen, im torn as well with my 12" PB and selling it to get the MacBook im holding on mine for a min but i do think that since you just picked up the 12" i would go ahead return it for the MacBook considering how much more your getting and your staying ahead with the Technology with a faster processor and ram.

I've started a size comparison thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=201948), for those who don't have access to an Apple store anytime soon. There's a picture comparing a P-Book to a MacBook. The P-Book is a very similar size to the iBook.

I know, I know. It's faster and better in anyway possible, except size.. But I actually really like my iBook, it's plenty fast for my everyday use, though iWeb is not all that fast.

But the size is the important factor, I really like my iBook for the size..

They are called cable tyies. In the UK, they can be bought at places like Staples (office supply store) and B&Q (DIY store).

Here in da USA their called zip-ties. Any office supply store has them. It's also useful to have a zip-tie cutter, so you can trim them to size, and cut then off once your done.
Their made out of pretty hard plastic so cutting them with scissors is a *****.

Me too... i went to the apple store to check the glossybooks out yesterday...

They are VERY nice, but i cant handle the glossy screen... i could see every overhead light reflected in the screen at most angles... noticed no reflections on the matte screens of the MBP's... (and never have with my old PBG4)

pictures did look really nice on the glossy's... colors were rich, blacks were black... but just too reflective for me... my office has a big window and overhead lighting.... also like to bring the powerbook out to the hammock with me to do a little surfing... dont see that happenng with a glossy screen...

Edit: oh yeah... if you buy a black one... get some touch up paint! the black macbook on display at the local store had only been out that day and already had a big scratch all the way through the paint on the top of the macbook (white underneath)

Indeed there's a replacement on its way. Unfortunately the machine also makes the intermittent fan noises (or 'moo' sounds), and goes into thermal throttling once the CPU load hits 100%.

I'm pleasantly surprised by the clarity and brightness of the glossy screen however. The keyboard is also one of the better laptop keyboards I've used.

My gf recons the new keyboard on the mac book looks like a scrabble board. So, as of now, the new mac book keyboard will be known as the scrabble keyboard.

Cheers but is it possible to have it 'in your face'. I dunno why but i prefer the close up ones. I saw one on the close up of the apple key but in the dsame style as the other one and that looked good but as i will be buying a macbook, it seems appropriate to have that.

Just got this baby today.

Hey, a question for anyone with the glossy screen or even without: I noticed today that for the first time, I can actually use my laptop outside; even in direct sunlight my MacBook's screen is still viewable (albeit the colors are a bit off) and slightly angled away it looks just beautiful. No longer am I trapped inside with this. Does the MBP's glossy screen do the same? Am I the only one who's noticed this huge improvement over past models?

My Black MacBook kinda does that. Not to that extreme, but it does push out a little more than the rest of the lid. The thing is, other than that it has no problems and that slight bulge doesn't ever bother me so I don't know if I should do anything. Also, I bought this thing a month ago, would they even fix it or would they just say that I could have done it so they won't take it....

They'll take it back. I had that problem on 2 MacBooks I exchanged the first one where the bezel came off and ended up outright returning the second one when the same problem arose. I'm going to wait it out a couple more months. Hopefully my tigger finger does'nt get tooo itchy.

The keyboard is fine to type on, no different than any other, IMO. I don't look at the keys when I type, and the actual space between keys hasn't really changed, it's just that they're flat and not sloped. It's a bit disconcerning to look at, but it's totally natural to the feel - I had no problems whatsoever.

As to the screen - have you guys ever used a matte screen outside on a sunny day? It's totally washed out and you can't see anything unless you're using a nuclear explosion to backlight it. The glossy screens are really not that bad. I'm a stickler for black colors so i'm finding them absolutely fabulous. Plus, whenever I need a mirror and I'm low on battery, all I have to do is pop it open ;)
