New Dell XPS M2010 starting at $4000. (http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m2010?c=us&l=en&s=gen&~section=design#tabtop)
I'll state the obvious by saying that Dell is overpricing these extremely and they are ripping off the iMac.
The specs are nearly identical to the 20" iMac besides the graphics (Mobility X1600 vs. Mobility X1800) but this costs 2.5x as much.

The remote accessory looks ugly.
It's not a very bad-looking package, but for the hardware its way too expensive, I think.

Yes, the machines are very similar, except:
The Dell is much less good looking.
Also, what's the point of having a folding screen if the machine isn't a laptop? I think Dell is trying to copy the iMac without blatantly copying the design.

i thought exactly the same. it's not a real all in one machine either because the base is separated from the monitor. somehow more like a G4 imac. the folding screen make no sense and the base wastes desk space. not a good concept and way too expensive.

I looked at this on Engadget and immidately laughed out loud. They're just desperate now.. I mean, before the LCDs, the Retail Stores, then the "accidental" Mac OS Drivers, now the wannabe iMac killer? Will I be surprised if they create a Dell Mini? This is hillarious and low..

Honestly, I think it's a nifty machine, and I can see gamers shelling out the money for one. It's essentially a powerful gaming desktop with the option of portability, which, if you attend as many LAN parties as some people do, is very handy. Also, the expandability far outstrips the iMac.
People shouldn't assume that every all-in-one is targeting Apple. It's a high-end gaming rig, and they're not even trying to say otherwise.

More power to them (redux!). I think it's a cute concept (well, I think the keyboard is atrocious, but the rest is reasonably cute). Yes, it's probably overpriced. But then again, who pays list for anything at Dell anyways? It's good to see them actually try to make something that's not exactly like everything else on the market for their XPS line... so far their XPS hardware has smacked of rebadging in the automotive industry.... :(

I think this is a pretty ridiculous machine to be honest. And the price tag, omfgwtfbbq???? How in the hell is that machine worth $4000? Let's be realistic now, that's just completely outrageous. I guess Dell fanboys will buy anything *sigh*
The design and styling of the unit itself seems pretty retarded. It's a cross between a desktop and a laptop which probably weighs 20 lbs. Certainly not portable enough to take with you everywhere like you could with a high end laptop that you could buy for at least $1000 less. I can't wait to see the first person trying to set one of these up on a plane flight, trying to figure out how to fit it on to his little folding table overflowing in to the people next to him.
Wow... this has got to be Dell's worst invention ever. Gotta respect the iSight rip-off, rofl.

There is something so "80's geek-tech" about Dell. Maybe it's the black. Maybe it's the fact you know it'll be ready for the garbage in a few years. It's not that it's ugly, it is just that Dell's designers don't understand design or the history of industrial design. At Apple, the guys understand and integrate.

If you can't even easily move it, why would you even WANT to close the screen?? Can anyone post a link to the Sony one? I was looking at Sony's site and can't seem to find it. Let's take a few quotes from the news.com article and extend them to more realistic terms:
"You can watch a DVD on a beautiful 20-inch screen, but then take that device to the office to do a presentation. You can play the latest video game, while recording TV and streaming live video. You can chat with friends while using video while riding the train," Parra said. "The PC is now the personal entertainment engine, until the piece of garbage that is Windows XP gives you the blue screen of death in about five minutes and renders the computer completely useless in a year or two."
"The design was inspired by jet engines, allowing for airflow cooling so that hard drives stay quiet and components stay cool, and we tried to mimic the sheer size of jet engines as well," Gruzen said.
Parra was careful to emphasize that service would be a large part of the product line, and that those on the other end of the phone line would be tenured, trained gamers who understand the needs of other gamers, but also don't speak English.
"The PC has evolved from a productivity platform into a digital entertainment platform, said Gruzen. "These products epitomize that space, while taking up every inch of space on your desk. Dell intends to be on the cutting edge here, now and into the future."
The customizable XPS 700 is also immediately available to order, but takes approximately 18 days for customization build, making it available no earlier than June 27. At least the Dell fans will get something while waiting another year for Windows Vista to come out.
Daniel.

I actually used that line at my office tonight. We had to introduce ourselves and say something that people find strange about you. I proceeded to say, "I love Apple computers. If you even say Windows XP, I will stab you in the jaw." Needless to say, we have a very laid-back work environment.

Are you serious or are you just making fun of the concept? I wouldn't ever pay 4000$ for that kind of machine, but at the same time, I think it's an interesting concept. If you work hours and hours on your computer every day, I think a big screen is neat. And being able to just fold and go is a big plus too.
You can get an iLugger for the iMac, but as I found out the hard way, some airlines enforce the weight limit very strictly, so I couldn't take my beloved 20-inch iMac with me to South Korea. IF - and I have no clue whether it's the case or not - the Dell weighs under the 10kg limit for carry-on luggage, then it's a decent fit for a certain class of people who want a very mobile desktop. I can toss my new Mini in my backpack, but the Dell 2405FPW screen I got for it will have to be shipped whenever I move, which is slightly annoying (and costs some $ too - something mobile workers would consider).
I would love to see a similar machine with a higher screen resolution though. I think Dell makes a 17-inch laptop with a 1920x1200 screen. (They do, right?) Why can't I get that same resolution on a 20-inch?!? The new Dell isn't a perfect machine, but it's a great concept... for some people.
Slightly off-topic, but I wish Apple offered a 20-inch iMac with a 1920x1200 screen. That'd be pretty cool!

Not really a bad looking design (considering it`s coming from Dell. Not Apple:p ) But it`s priced 4000$ WTF. Price it at 2500 and it might just sell. The market needs variety. Not everyone can be satisfied with a White iMac(But I`ll be definitely:D )
But it`s good to see that atleast Dell is trying something. If you forget bout the price than the Machine is not that bad at all. There cant be any real harm in incresed competetion. If they try and somehow(just dont know how though) get an iMac Killer. It`d mean we,apple users, will definitely get an even better iMac which`ll blow away anything anyone else is offering:D

Abstract
Jun 1, 2006, 11:14 AM
Thats a lan partyers dream computer.
If you buy a 17" MBP, and you end up a computer that has:
- smaller screen, but same resolution
- a larger HD size (17" MBP has a 120GB, the Dell only comes with 80 GB)
- slightly worse video card
- $1200 more money saved in the bank
- faster CPU (2.16 GHz Core Duo rather than Dell's 1.83 GHz)
- 8x Double-Layer DVD-RW (the Dell's isn't double layer)
but oh wait....... it's 6.8 lbs rather than the Dell's 18.3 lbs!!! Including the AC adapter "brick", the Dell comes in at 20.8 lbs.
So really, what benefits are there for LAN parties if you were to bring that Dell along? It's slower, and it's bigger. Oh, and the keyboard is pretty much wireless, and who wants to play games using a wireless keyboard?
The design is nice, but overall, it does suck and was a bad idea. Even if this Dell was the same price as a 17" MBP, I'd still take the 17" MBP because of the weight and gain in CPU speed and HD size.
The remote is cool though. Something like that would be a good accessory to the Airport Express. :)

Is there even such a thing? entertainment/gaming/portable???
I don't think they've been able to define a target market.
entertainment systems are not supposed to be portable. Traditionally neither are gaming systems (although that is changing).
I think they tried to make it all things for all people.... and like they say "you can please some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time"
It might be nice machine, but Dell is gonna have trouble selling it, especially at that price.
I'm also a bit dubious about this:
In just seconds, your XPS M2010 turns from a stylish and portable briefcase with a leather-like back, gloss accents, and lines and curves like a fine sports car, into a complete entertainment center
Leather like? sounds cheap!
Gamers don't want a stylish corporate looking briefcase.
And business people ain't gonna lug that monster around, especially if it isn't real leather.
EDIT: it may only weigh 20pounds, but what about the 7.1 speakers you gotta take with you... might need a moving truck.

Yeah, I don't really see how that can be considered a gamers wet dream. I mean, sure its got a really sweet video card in there (for now). But is it upgradable (something most hardcore gamers would demand)? Even if it is, it's still really expensive for what you get. The CoreDuo 1.83 is practically a joke on this system. And what about all the PC people who can build a/an (arguably) better system for much cheaper. I think the design is ugly, and I'd never buy one. At a $4000 price point, I'd go for a quad with a 20" ACD and be much happier.

I find it funny that the desktop background on that machine features a mean-looking Panther.
Surely they jest.
This must be what happens when marketers just totally give up at their job. Personally, I'd never buy a computer that looks like a lawn chair for 4-year olds.

Dude, that is an iMac wannabe! 3 times the price of an iMac, slightly better graphics, less storage capability (500 vs. 240), same processor, it may hold up to 4 GB instead of 2, but that doubles the price...:p Though it has a battery, this is not a laptop. The keyboard is external.:D

Na... this has a 20" display, ATI x1800, 2 Hard drives, 7.1 speaker system, full size, reall keyboard, and a display that is at the eyes level. The MBP is great (and will be greater when it will be in normal operating tempartures), but this one is more of a desktop than a laptop, but has "portable" possibilities.
The Dell with 2.16 Core Duo, 2 7200RPM 100GB Drives, 1GB RAM (2x512MB), and HD Audio = $4,275.
17in MBP with 2.16 Core Duo, 1 7200RPM 100GB Drive, 1GB RAM (1x1GB) = $2,799.
That leaves you $1,476 to buy a Dell 20.1 LCD ($415), 100GB 7200RPM HD (~$100), Apple Bluetooth KB + Mouse ($118) and 7.1 System ($200) which only comes out to $833 saving you over $600! ;) :D

Makes no sense to me - look at the desktop real estate it takes up. Might as well have an old CRT monitor.

no joke, speaking of which my new dell monitor should be here monday :D
I love my 20" Dell FP. It's beautiful!!! Beats the 17" Old school flat I had before that (a dell as well) and before that a dell 17" CRT.

I think I'd prefer to stab them in the jaw.
I've always been a fan of a punch to the back of the head. They never see it coming.
