After a long wait, Calgary is finally getting an Apple Store.

...Yay.
UPDATE: I scouted around Chinook and found an empy old store thing, right beside the Bay on the opposite of Sport Check on the second floor. I'm guessing this is it.
UPDATE 2: The real location is not by The Bay, but in fact the old Caban store.
UPDATE 3: It might not be in the old Caba store, but possibly the Reitmans store.

Chinook is kind of a busy place...ok, maybe an insanely busy place, but I'll take it.

Meh, their selection is mediocre and both their websites suck. But I know someone who works at Westworld, so that could justify the bad website part.

This is actually an old story. It was first broken by Shawn King (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=2167700&postcount=1140) back in February and Apple's website (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=2398525&postcount=122) confirmed it on May 11th. It is great that Calgary is getting the store and any scouting of the store, especially with pictures, would be fantastic. If you do get some pictures, I'm sure ehMac (http://www.ehmac.ca/showthread.php?t=40423) and ifoAppleStore (http://www.ifoapplestore.com/) would also love to see and post them. Hope it opens soon.

I know it's an OLD story, but as far as I know I'm the only one who has investigated it at the mall (Bit sad for a 13 year old). The store is NOWHERE near opening, they haven't even gutted the place. It's all green inside from the colour the people painted the wood at the previous store.

We need another Apple Store in New York City :D

Abstract
Jul 8, 2006, 10:01 PM
Having 3 stores doesn't make Apple any more convenient for us to have easy access to Apple. It's not a big deal whether we get a store or not. It's a big deal to get them in lots of major cities, and decent stores at that. I hear the one at Yorkdale isn't exactly something to write home about.

If it was a big store, or a flagship store, that would be nice. I wish they opened it in Vancouver, though. Large population, plus it's more of an international city.

The Apple resellers aren't bad places to go, either. There are bad employees at resellers, just like there are bad employees at Apple stores.

Very confusing.

Why Calgary?

A more sensible location would be Vancouver or Montreal. Just feels better to me. They're more cultured, savvy cities, so I assume there are more Mac users there. :)

My guess if that it is a question of availability of the acceptable locations. Apple is very selective in what kind of locations it is willing to to put its stores, and it also seems to have worked at a deal with one Canadian firm, Cadillac-Fairview (http://www.cadillacfairview.com/Client/Cadillac/CF_UW_V500_MainEngine.nsf/pagedocid/70379F8D8A5B577185256A33004EB8F5?OpenDocument) for its retail outlets. So the likely story is the Calgary location they wanted came open before such locations in other cities. It's not a value judgement that Calgary is better than Vancouver, and they have one scheduled to be open in Montreal.

OK maybe I am a little biased against Calgary, how about Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver first...more population that like macs...

Actually I don't want an Apple Store in Vancouver it would just take away business from the mac sellers who have been around 15 years struggling through the years and they would just get screwed by not being an Apple Labelled store.

Yeah, before your panties get too much into a bunch, please realize that Toronto already has two Apple Stores, one in Yorkdale and one in Eaton Centre: http://www.apple.com/ca/retail/

P.S. And just cuz they have more population, doesn't necessarily mean more that like Macs...

Greetings,

For a few months my girlfriend worked at Cadillac Fairview - the firm which owns all of the retail malls across Canada in which Apple is setting up stores. (to-date at least). She provided me with an interesting perspective on why Apple has chosen Chinook Center in Calgary.

The reason Calgary is getting a store before other cities is Chinook Mall has become the BEST mall in Canada from a retail perspective. It is THE most sought-after location in all of Canada because it has the highest retail traffic of all the malls that Cadillac Fairview owns.

I know it does not make sense because Calgary's population is only 1 million - much smaller than Vancouver.

I believe the combination of Calgary's growing economy (the best in Canada - right now at least) coupled with a city full of well-paid white collar workers with lots of oil-stock options money driving a housing boom and general retail growth is the reason why Chinook Center is the prime spot for an Apple Store.

There are more head offices here in Calgary than any other city in Canada (even Toronto !). There used to be a time (way back in '89) when several large companies had Macs in their corporate enterprise (ESSO, TransAlta Utilities, TransCanada Pipeline, Gulf Canada). I think an Apple Store will do very well out here.

Actually, a store in vancouver would probably cost a lot more than one in Calgary, simply because of the high real-estate costs.

Anyways, when Apple does open a store in Vancouver (hopefully soon), I hope it isn't a small store in a mall. The ideal place would be downtown, perhaps on on Granville @ Robson.

Looks to me like a location has been picked for the new Apple store in Chinook. It looks like it will not be on the second floor, but instead on the main floor at the main entarance across from TD Canada Trust. Right now it is a Caban store, but they are finishing up a store closing sale. This location would be excellent for Apple as it is in a prime traffic flow area and has outside access with good visibility from a major road (Macloed Trail). I am looking forward to possibly being at the grand opening as an Apple staff member. Fingers crossed.

Those pics posted previously are defintely not of Chinook. Here is the space in question, (ex Caban space). However it might be too soon to assume that Apple is taking this particular space, as Sephora is also opening a store in Chinook, and has similar space and profile requirements as Apple. Someone needs to go check it out next time they're at the mall, if they are demo-ing now the logo on the hoarding will be up ASAP.

Hey everyone, I was down at Chinook today and snapped these pics of where the Caban used to be. It seems like the perfect location for Apple although a little bit of a different design from your average Apple store with all the entrances. Much better than that other location as attached that is right next to The Bay. Anyway I can not wait till they open a store here, although I still have to say WestWorld is awesome!

I just wish I had my SLR on me when I went down to Chinook, the pictures would have turned out way better. The 2MP camera on my w810i can only really take semi decent grain filled pictures. Oh well I will just have to remember to bring my camera next time I am heading down there. Chances are the old Caban store will not be Apple, at least not if Apple wants to open before Christmas. Right now it looks like they will be opening a 'Spirit of Christmas' store there. Notice the green paint and the christmas trees....

bush79
Oct 11, 2006, 06:58 PM
Yup, Spirit of Christmas it is for the ex-Caban location. Which means that space won't be under construction for anything permanent until January at the earliest.

As for that space near The Bay, the location is crap and has been empty for ages (It was a Spirit of Christmas last season). Low traffic and practically zero visability.

November opening is obviously no longer a possibility.

Unfortunatly I don't have pictures of the space, but it is on the lower level, near the Williams-Sonoma. I don't think it has street access, but I'm not sure because I have never been in that particular store.

As of writing this message, it would seem that Apple has taken down job listings for Calgary from their site (again). From what I understand, Reitmans has to be out of the store in less than 3 months, so we can expect the Apple store to open in the spring.

Wow i wish i knew about this sooner! I am in calgary. So next time I am in chinook i will have a look at the place. I also think Calgary is a great place for this. It is a very rich city. The housing market is ISANE! We just stopped climbing in the housing market the average house is something like $400,000 and that is not any 2 floor house..........

EDIT: http://www.jimsparrow.com/market-stats.php average sale price anywhere from $300,000 in the low end corner of town too $491,000

The current Reitman's space is PERFECT for Apple.

-3,651 square feet
-33'-0" wide mall frontage
-Deep, rectangular layout
-Directly adjacent to Williams-Sonoma
-Extra tall storefront with maximum exposure

Some pics of the space as it exists, and the mall lease plan.

Awesome news. Thanks for the tidbit, Burntfire.

why don't you ask the apple people why they chose calgary (umm.. probably the same reason why williams-sonoma and pottery barn--to name a few-- chose calgary to be their flagship store in alberta). oh and i suggest next time.. think before you type and save yourself a lot embarassment! :o

First off I just phoned chinook mall. http://southcentre.shopping.ca/cambridge/jsp5/cu_cu.jsp?mallid=sou the public relations manager. And they do not know who is going into Reitman's. She said she would say if she knew where apple is moving into. They currently have NOT decided on a place according to this public relations manager. But she says they are still in talks with apple but have not signed a contract.

Now you have to remember I don't know how much she would tell if she even knew...but it sounded like its safe to say it is not confirmed its going into Reitman's.

Wow great news! Its too bad i live in the NW and dont ever shop at Chinnok.

But they need a store downtown! Downtown Calgary has the most square feet of office space in Canada. I would hope they build a store in the Encana tower when it opens in the next few years. Thats one cool building, with lots of new retail space comming as well.

That link is for Southcentre Mall, not Chinook Centre. In any case Chinook wouldn't be able to confirm at this point, that is up to Apple, not the mall management. They won't acknowledge its occuring until the logos are up on the hoarding. Time will tell. As for not knowing who is going into the Reitman's space, that's a joke...Reitman's is being FORCED to move to a secondary location with low visibility and traffic...because Chinook wants to put that high profile space to use for high volume retail.

I hope construction won't take too long:apple:

BTW with the 800M$ expansion (IIRC) that Chinook is planning, Apple will be perfectly set up if it makes it's move now.... (Maybe they will eventually open up into an even larger custom space...)

I've already posted this in another thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=3404258&postcount=403), but I'll post it here as well.I've been looking forward to Apple's new store in Calgary's Chinook Center for a while now in anticipation of a spring opening, but I was shocked to see that all job positions for the location have been pulled from Apple's web site. There is nothing on monster.com as well. Does anyone know if there is trouble with this store opening? I have a feeling they are going into the new wing which hasn't even broken ground yet. Which means apple can't really expect people who apply last november to still be willing to work for them 1-2 years from now. So its not worth collecting possible employee info yet.

Hey guys so I was looking around on the Apple site and I did find this:
http://www.apple.com/ca/support/products/premium/onsite.html

If the Covered Equipment is located within a 100-mile (United States) or 160 km (Canada) radius of the following cities, and Apple makes a determination that repair service is required before 1:00 p.m. local time on a business day, in most cases, Apple will deliver On-Site Service to the location within four (4) hours of the dispatch. For the same locations, if the need for repair service is determined after 1:00 p.m. local time, in most cases, On-Site Service will be delivered no later than 12:00 p.m. the following business day.

United States
Atlanta, GA
Boston, MA
Chicago, IL
Dallas, TX
Denver, CO
Houston, TX
Los Angeles, CA
Miami, FL
Minneapolis, MN
New York City, NY
Portland, OR
Sacramento, CA
San Franciso, CA
Seattle, WA
Washington DC

Canada
Calgary, AB
Montreal, QC

I am not sure if this means anything, since Vancouver is on this list though. Could there be a Apple corprote post or something.

I was visiting Calgary a few weeks ago and noticed this huge building-high iPod Ad in Red on one of the buildings downtown. I didn't investigate, but the building was definitely under construction. Does anybody think this will be the Apple store?

I know there's been a lot of discussion about it being in a mall but Apple usually likes to make major landmark stores, especially when working in new markets and areas.

Sorry about the crappy picture, you can make out the Apple logo and the dancing iPod guy. It was downtown probably...5th street? I'm only estimating I don't know Calgary very well.

Nope, that's the Theatre Junction (http://www.theatrejunction.com) building, it's been going under renovations for quite a while now and that one side of the scaffolding has had a number of different ads on it from GM trucks to Budwieser beer.

Guys if you needed confirmation of where the Apple store is in Calgary its actually already opened inside of the Deerfoot Meadows Futureshop.

I spoke to the guy there that is employed under Apple Canada and he says that based on demographics and overall market demand in Calgary, Apple couldn't justify opening a full blown store but instead leased some space to set up their own Kiosk inside of Futureshop. I guess the inventory is owned by Futureshop but the Apple guy there is hired by Apple.

So I guess to sum it up the Apple store here is really an Apple Kiosk with an Apple products expert.

That is what I witnessed myself this past weekend.

At one point there was a plan to put one in Chinook center because apples website said so. But that would be very hush hush anyway. It still could be going into the new section of Chinook when that is built. Or possible the new mall going in up north.

So after Apple scours Calgary first for two years and comes up with nada, WEM swoops in and signs the deal first. No surprises there, it was only a matter of time.

I have heard that the Calgary Apple Store may be going downtown, in the Eaton Centre/TD Square mall. The place is undergoing a massive renovation that will see a new Holt Renfrew (3 times larger than the current store) and a new, continuous glass domed ceiling. There will be new stores for Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co. et al, and a whole whack of new streetfront retail, as well as a new Harry Rosen flagship store. In fact, I have heard that the Development Permit submitted to the City shows conceptual images of a 2-storey glass-fronted Apple store next to the new Holt Renfrew. Would be nice to put it downtown in an urban setting, just like the new Vancouver store...time will tell.

touche!

Weird that, whatever it is, they'd just leave it in the parking lot. Heck, even if it was their tables or shelving, the type of people that would steal it wouldn't check first. They'd nab it, open it when they got home expecting a crate of iMacs or something, and instead have a crapload of IKEA-like furniture.

Next time you go to the mall, try and take a picture. I'll try and remember. :D

I walked past the new location a couple of days ago. If you look through the crack in the doors, you can see the genius symbol on the back wall all lit up, so they're getting really close to being open. October 4th seems quite possible. Strange that nothing has been announced yet though.

Just got this email from Apple:

The Apple Store, Market Mall, opens its doors at 9:30 a.m., September 27.
Come to the new Apple Store, Market Mall, and bring your curiosity. It's the place to test-drive any Mac, iPod, or iPhone and catch free workshops to learn all the latest tips and tricks. When you get there, find our Concierge in the orange shirt. The Concierge is your guide to everything from checking in for an appointment to instant checkout. And if you're one of the first 1000 visitors, you'll get a free Apple T-shirt.*

Just got the notice in my email. The Grand Opening is this Saturday (the 27th) at 9:30am.

First 1000 customers get a free Apple shirt.

EDIT - Blast; scooped by X5-452 :)

A meet-up would be great; I'm out of town this weekend though, so I'd be out. Otherwise, I'd be there ready to get my shirt for sure!

Finally! Calgary's getting an Apple Store!!! I am SO gonna be there! Just glad I finally have a place to take my MBP in for repairs if I need to rather than sending it away (knock wood, hasn't happened yet).

BTW, how far in advance do you think I'd need to line up to get a t-shirt? :p

I got the email too. Too bad I don't need to buy anything. I want to check it out but I'm in no rush.

Actually I assumed there was already an Apple Store there. So I am also delighted with the news (seeing as I am moving to Calgary before Crimbo :) )

wonderful as I've yet to experience an actual Apple store. All we have in Gibraltar is an Apple approved centre (few displays but not much really as Gib is a bit small).

I can't wait - its now on my 'When I Get To Canada I Am Gonna Do' list with Ice Hockey game, See real snow for the first time ever and get a descent Starbucks!

My first Apple Store was in Seattle over the summer, and to be honest it was underwhelming. I think you need to go to a flagship store to fell all the Apple shazam.

So, I was past the store today...took a quick look between the doors...lots of hardware and displays set up. Kinda wish I wasn't working on Saturday! Oh well.

Anyway...anyone know if they will honor Education Pricing in-store?

That would be great. I never thought they would set one up in Calgary.

Chinook is kind of a busy place...ok, maybe an insanely busy place, but I'll take it.

Westworld and MyMac Dealer aren't going to be happy.

But mymac ealer and westworld are very expensive!!!
At-least we will get a reasonably priced mac!

Across from H&M according to the Market Mall website (and the H&M logo reflected in the picture). Right between Laura and IRIS. Go thru the west entrance and turn right where the hallways intersect.

I was at Market Mall and got a decent photo on my iPhone.

Lots of people were inside- think it was a training thing.

I apologize for the finger on the top left. I was honestly in a rush to get back to the University... XD

We're not the sociable type in Calgary... I was about #40 in line and grabbed what I needed and was out before 10 AM. Pretty difficult to browse with so many people in the story!

Was at the opening. I am very impressed as I finally got a good play around with an iPhone. None of them had service though, and they didn't sell em.

I was not only there today, but I was the guy in the gray dress shirt on the news waiting in line! Hahahahaha.

It was pretty baller in there - super crowded though. I'm still holding out to the rumour that Apple is buying the 3 floor space left by McNally Robinson and building their flagship store on Stephan Ave.
