Warranty, whats that? AppleCare, who needs it?

This is the thread for everyone who gets tired of their plain white, black, or brushed aluminum Apple.

I have had 4 Apples now, and all 4 I have made modifications to. The latest is my mac mini. I have only started with the mods :-) Here is what I've done so far:

http://static.flickr.com/82/214667138_6d2b522ac2_m.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/99787587@N00/214667138/)

I plan on adding an LED under the apple so it will become iluminated! Then, once I can easily obtain a Core 2 chip, I will drop that in since the mini is only core solo (I intentionally bought the solo intending to upgrade. . . as soon as I found that people were able to do this)

Here are links to my other mods. . . I will have full details of my mac mini mod on my web site once I finish with the LED addition!

Very nice mods. I still think that MR should add a mods category, like macnn. Keep it up.

Would look mighty awesome on a MacBook..............

Oooh. I'm liking that iBook G3. I wouldn't mind voiding my applecare to mod my MBP, but not until after I get a stable unit that I don't have to send in multiple times :(

On second thought, maybe I'll wait till my 3 years are up... :D

I actually found out how to disasemble the 12" PB from this site (http://homepage.mac.com/jimyounkin/PhotoAlbum7.html) where the mod is a classic colored apple for the PB!

whats happened to the Mac Mods? Something must have happened recently!

I'll get the ball rolling again with my modded MacBook concept. I love the matte feel of the black MacBook, but I don't like the screen bezel and keyboard. I find they are difficult to work with. Easiest solution? Get the best of both worlds. Get a black MacBook, and either replace its screen bezel and keyboard with the white one, or gut both the computers, and rebuild them with new cases. The latter will probably be the one that happens, as the cheapest way to get a black MacBook is if it is damaged beyond repair. People will think it's just a standard black MacBook when they see it closed, but once I open it up... boom! (shameless Steve Jobs quote there)

With my über-noob Photoshop skills, I've created a mock-up of my idea. If anyones black MacBook kicks the bucket, or if anyone wants to do the inverse mod, please PM me! :)

I converted a Blue and White G3 tower to a 450 Mhz G4. Swapped out motherboards. I'm going to be making a MacQuarium. I don't know whether to use a non-working Mac Plus or an Apple Studio Display.

If it's non-working, the Plus, obviously.

Unless the studio display is non-working as well, in which case, make two. (Send one to me);)

I really think that would be a sweet idea. I don't necessarily have a problem with the black insides because they're "difficult" - but it would be nice to get rid of the fingerprints/smudges problem. The white insides were always nicer.. but the glossy outside ruins it. This could definitely be a neat mod.

You've probably seen my other mod before. I showed it off a few months ago.

I swapped around the clear handles and side panels on a G4 I had with a G3 I had, so it has the silver panels, clear handles, and the blueberry plastics and Apples.

I'll have to get pictures of it, as it looks ********** sweet. :D

^WOW Thanks!!!

i've been googling ibook g3 mods forever and love the part about alcohol to make the case clear... oh yeah :p

or i just might make the apple logo clear and put in an orange color film to make it glow? will that work?

From what I recall, there's a thin piece of white paper over the logo on the G3 iBooks once you get the top case off. You can replace this paper with colored film or whatever you'd like. I think it's just taped on.

Been a while since I've been in a G3 - the SkyBook died a horrible death after a failed backlit keyboard installation attempt, and that was the last time I dug into one.

Well, that's what I tried to do, and it killed my iBook - but I screwed it up. So if you do it right, it is possible. I had tried to make it so that each individual key would glow when the lights were off. We took two blue LED's and powered them using the LCD power, so whenever the LCD was on, they would come on - we then drilled little holes on top and ran fiber optic wire in the top and scratched it under each key so that the light would shine through there. We ended up soldering in the wrong resistor (this was a rushed, over-night project - involving lots of beer) and ended up frying the logic board.

But it would have been damn sweet had we pulled it off!

Sadly, the only digital pic I have of it is an "in progress" pic:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b236/livingfortoday2/progress.jpg

There are a lot of "during" pics, but they're at home in a photo album. And mostly they're just blurry close-ups of LED's and beer bottles. There were no "after" pics, as we were all very disappointed and tired.

Dig your power supply (the black one) and the Tektronix digital phosphor scope. (if that's what they are)

And if that is in YOUR basement - don't tell me, I'll be so jealous.

My basement is all 15+ year old or home built stuff. No digital scopes for me, just tubes of the analog type. And power supplies that I've built because I needed them, but was too cheap to ever buy one.

Drives me NUTS when I think of doing something, of course, picturing the equipment I use every day at work (80K + scopes and what not) - then I see my 20mhz Dual Channel POS scope. Oh yeah, I can't do it here. :D

the mod took about 3-4 hours for the bottom case, and about 1-2 for the display case. I started with a white 1.83GHz Core Duo MacBook, so I had to completely gut the computer and put the parts in the new cases. Probably the hardest thing was getting the magsafe out of the case; i had to be rougher than i would have liked to get it out.

In terms of service, MacBooks are a lot easier to take apart than MacBook Pros.

See, I plan to do the opposite, I plan on making a xMac, the mac people have been desperate for, built out of PC parts...

Here's a photoshop I did and a photo of all the insides, some parts are transparent so you can see where the other parts go :p

I plan to start building it on sundays and in my spare time at some point soon, dimensions are as follows:

Height: 20cm
Width: 27cm
Depth: 22cm

Ignore my poor photoshop skills, the big ass power button will also have the power light built in, hence is huge size :P

Acrylic with the inside sprayed white for the front and sides and brushed metal top.

It's pretty much half a computer case, and take away the space for the power supply.

I expect the full "OH THATS HORRIBLE, IT'S NOT A PROPPER MAC, BUY A MAC PRO, LOLZ!!!11" but I really don't care, I'm doing this as a hobby and a experiment...

Schtumple, that looks cool. Realizing this is just a shopped idea at this point, I don't see how you could fit the power supply in that configuration and also have a DVD drive. It also looks like it will have a lot of issues with cooling and cable routing. Not to mention a high end video card. The hard drive placement in the photo blocks virtually all of your pci slots.

Unless you go bigger, I can't imagine how you could build something that would even come close to the specs of a baseline G5 tower. No way you'll get more than once processor in there, and the heatsink would also interfere with the DVD drive/powersupply issue.

I have a few suggestions. I would make the case shape differently (bigger). You could still achieve a nice look by making it more like a shoebox, only with more height. That would allow you to mount your hard drives above your pci slots, with a cooling exhaust fan on the side in between the drives and pci slots. The DVD drive, you could get a slot loading drive, and flip it sideways and place it in the same space, only have the bezel coming out the right side. It's rectangular, and this would free up space for your power supply, and the added height would get it off your heatsink. Then place intake fans on the front of the case. You could get nice chrome or titanium grills for aesthetics, and maybe even fans with LED lights. It would put all your SATA cables in close distance from the motherboard inputs, and would allow nice cable management and airflow.

It would still be unique and aesthetically pleasing. Put some rubber grommets in, wrap your cables, and your clear panels will be showcasing something that looks nice, instead of crowded and overheated.

If you want to have comparable specs to the new G5, you'll need to get a server mobo, and that means an even bigger case. But if you're going for a run of the mill power level box, you could pull this off. Could you list some of the hardware you plan on installing? And the OS? Good luck, and keep us posted!

Actually, it isn't a shopped idea, that picture with the transparent hardware was actually put like that, there is actually plenty of room for pci slots, it looks like there isn't but trust me, there is, just, the psu is a small form factor psu (10 x 12 x 6cm, i think) not a regular one, no way would a regular fit in there.

Unless you go bigger, I can't imagine how you could build something that would even come close to the specs of a baseline G5 tower. No way you'll get more than once processor in there, and the heatsink would also interfere with the DVD drive/powersupply issue.

I'm not after anything spectacular, I just want this as a basic machine for my tv/1tb back up server.

I have a few suggestions. I would make the case shape differently (bigger). You could still achieve a nice look by making it more like a shoebox, only with more height. That would allow you to mount your hard drives above your pci slots, with a cooling exhaust fan on the side in between the drives and pci slots.

Again, the hard drives ARE mounted about the pci slots, there is just enough room to do this, I need to take a better photo, or some kind of 3d drawing to show this, that photoshopped picture may not show it, but this is actually all possible with the hardware I have.

The DVD drive, you could get a slot loading drive, and flip it sideways and place it in the same space, only have the bezel coming out the right side. It's rectangular, and this would free up space for your power supply, and the added height would get it off your heatsink. Then place intake fans on the front of the case. It would put all your SATA cables in close distance from the motherboard inputs, and would allow nice cable management and airflow.

I have been tempted to go with a slot loading drive, it would go so well with the acrylic front, but the price put me off. I am working on air flow at the moment, I'm thinking I might have to go with a mac pro front like design, I hate fans with LEDs, very tacky.

It would still be unique and aesthetically pleasing. Put some rubber grommets in, wrap your cables, and your clear panels will be showcasing something that looks nice, instead of crowded and overheated.

The more I think about it, it would be nice to have a cheese grater (:p) front, all the cables were going to be perfectly hidden, I hate cables, alot

If you want to have comparable specs to the new G5, you'll need to get a server mobo, and that means an even bigger case. But if you're going for a run of the mill power level box, you could pull this off. Could you list some of the hardware you plan on installing? And the OS? Good luck, and keep us posted!

Again, run of the mill is what I'm after.

I built this PC into my (old) desk, so I've pulled these kind of things off before :p

I have the following hardware

Pentium D 2.8(??)GHZ
Some small mobo, can't remember the make
2gb of DDR400 RAM
1 1tb drive or 2 500gb drives, haven't made my mind up yet, probably the 1tb will be best.
bog standard DVDRW
Can't remember the graphics card, it really isn't anything special, but it works in OSX86 so I'm happy with it
OSX86 is my operating system, the machine has run it before, so I'm sure it'll do it again :p

Ok, so, new design (Should i begin to post this into a new thread?)

For air flow needs, the front is now grilled(?) top and sides are white acrylic (white iMac style), the power button will be inside one of those holes, discrete as possible.

It is my day off tomorrow so I will start dismantling the old casing and cutting down the metal that I'll need, god this is going to be difficult...

oh, don't ask about the cd drive, I haven't thought of a proper colour for it, although I think black may have to do...

I have to draw this all out again, in detail, on autocad, so my dad can make the front at work...

Agreed the drive is an eyesore, but again, it's not like it's easy to hide...

I thought about this, but I think it would be too cheesy, I might have the apple logo light up though.

Nice job! You gonna pop the plastic off of the battery and make that clear too, though?

it's kinda hard to tell but the battery cover is already removed, it's gray and not white lol. it's not going back on till it's painted. i did clear another outer shell again last night and it turned out better then expected. i still can't figure out what happened to the one that's on it now. think i'll just sell them on ezbay:p

i know that you can change the color of a computers grille with LEDs. could i do this on the grille (hinge) of a aluminum macbook? if so, i may do that and color the logo after my warrenty runs out!!:D;)

Here's what i plan to do to my MacBook Pro when the warranties out. If anyone has fully dismantled a MacBook Pro, PM Me, would be a great help.

Anodize the outside case, then etch the top, the etch design are cards, its not a finished img.

Thanks, the front Card will be an Apple Ace, the other 4 the regular Ace.

yeah or another cool idea i think would be to have the cards fan out from both sides of the apple. still making the logo the center.

That was the original idea, but then 2 cards on the right would be blank, as the letter/suit symbol is on the top left of the card.

@OP: he links to your other mods dont work... This Mac Mini one is very cool, though! Was probably a lot cheaper than a Colorware job, too!

Have you had a lock at the date of this thread and the first post? That might be the reason why the links don't work.

Ohh... OK, I just saw the post on the "New Posts" section, I assumed it was a recent thread!

Revived an old thread huh :p

Anways, any ibook up to 700mhz(some of the latter 700mhz changed though) where the casing was painted on the inside of clear acrylic. so taking the case apart and soaking it in 90% alcohol and then wiping it off the white paint will make it clear. I've dyed quite a bit of the opaque iBooks and dying one of the clear ones once you removed the paint is really awesome. ;)
