Description:: Apple has debuted a new silhouette-style television commercial for iTunes and the iPod featuring a partially silhouetted BoB Dylan wearing an iPod while performing a song from his new album, Modern Times. This ad differs from any of Apple's previous silhouette ads in that the ad features mostly black and white coloring as opposed to the traditional pink, yellow, blue, and green. Previously, U2 starred in a silhouette iPod+iTunes television ad of their own...

That's right. Remember Eminem's Apple lawsuit? It was over the kid singing an Eminem song while listening to an iPod.

Here's a quote from Eminem's lawyer: He had never endorsed a product. They felt that using 'Lose Yourself' was in effect an endorsement of the product and it would be much more valuable than what they were talking about paying. (reference here (http://www.macobserver.com/article/2005/05/10.12.shtml))

Not long after that, Eminem himself was in one of the silhouette ads.

that was part of the settlement...probably got his money the exposure he was after when they first approached him.

The ad can be found via Apple's website (http://www.apple.com/ipod/ads/dylan/), and Modern Times is available for pre-order via the iTunes Music Store (link (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPreorder?id=175611761)).

 I thought he was dissing digital music just last week....

Well, I guess money talks, huh.

I got the impression from his comments last week that he hated the modern engineering techniques being used on music, perhaps making things too perfect. Not so the much the digital delivery of the music on CD or iTMS.

could be wrong.

And as far as money talks, well yes it does,, but really he is promoting himself and his new album, not so much the iTMS, at least that is the main reason he is there, i would think.

ZOMG no I can't see the trackwheel. Must be a new one! When's it coming out?

I mean I'm so excited, usually Apple don't put their new secrecy-shrouded models in ads by accident before they are released, but 1337 I'm so excited.

Anyone else notice the very similar lyrics of Dylan's

"Someday baby, you ain't gonna work for me any more" and McKinley Morganfield's

"Someday baby, you ain't gonna trouble, Poor me, anymore."

For a second I actually thought it was a cover of "Trouble No More".

that was part of the settlement...probably got his money the exposure he was after when they first approached him.

Then through action, he's a self-admitted hypocrite. I just gained a tiny margin of respect for eminem now. There aren't many people out there who will admit that they're hypocritical, let alone announce it to the world by appearing in an Apple ad after they'd recently denounced commercialism. :)

uhu. i'd like to see which ad they saw.

As would I.

dictionary.com says a silhouette is

"1. a two-dimensional representation of the outline of an object, as a cutout or configurational drawing, uniformly filled in with black, esp. a black-paper, miniature cutout of the outlines of a famous person's face.
2. the outline or general shape of something: the slim silhouette of a skyscraper.
3. a dark image outlined against a lighter background."

What this ad shows might be described as Bob Dylan in dimmed/poor light rather than a silhouette of Dylan. There is arguably a "silhouette" of the dancer in the commerical on the floor, but that's more a shadow than a silhouette.

In any case, I'm not overly impressed by the commerical. Dylan isn't cool because he's in an iPod commercial, and iPod isn't cool because Dylan is in an iPod commercial. Maybe if it had been a silhouette and then at then end we see it's Dylan, that might have been more interesting.

When has Bob Dylan ever been consistent in what he says, means, or does? :p

I'm sorry? He claims he doesn't like new recording techniques, which I can relate to. Records have quite a bit more depth to them than CDs (or even worse, music purchased on iTunes). It would be unwise to think Dylan would not want to promote his new album any way he can.

I didn't care for the U2 ad much, but I really liked the look of the ads with Wynton Marsalis and Eminem. Besides those, the most recent 'dancers' ad also had more textured and 3 dimensional environments. The Bob Dylan ad - eh, so so.

The colors and the light is just brilliant, almost like an old Ansel Adams photo. ok, perhaps not...lol... but it is very aesthetically appealing. I didn't like the hysterical colors in the previous commercials.

I think Dylan's diss of modern recording had more to do with making the music sound small. He said the music played live by his band sounded 10 times better than the reproduction--and why wouldn't it? To me it's like seeing a picture of Yosemite Falls and seeing Yosemite Falls. Whether it's music or a natural landscape it's much better to be there in person.

As for the ad, I liked his Victoria Secret ad better.

It's a lot more complicated than that. Modern music uses a great deal of processing. For example, compression, which is often used to make everything loud. In the end, there are no dynamics (loud vs. soft) left in the music. Everything is the same volume. I happen to agree with Dylan on this. Music is generally overprocessed.

Secondly, there's the old issue of lossless vs. lossy formats. MacRumors has been through that lots of times.

Apple needs to do another one, but completely different. Have two dancers side-by-side, one in black with a white ipod, the other in white with a black iPod.

Just a thought.

I think this new Bob Dylan mini-blues Music Video from his forthcoming album "Modern Times" Ad (http://www.apple.com/ipod/ads/dylan/) specifically shot for iPod + iTunes is by far the best Apple AD -except for 1984 - that has ever been made. Wow! I am blown away by the way it was shot and how fantasic it sounds. Definitely Clio (http://www.clioawards.com/home/) worthy.

Let's hope Apple submits it to the Clio (http://www.clioawards.com/home/) nomination committee. Congratulations to all who made this ad happen.

For those of you who don't know Clio (http://www.clioawards.com/home/), it's the advertising community's equvalent of the Oscar and Emmy.

Well, now we know what that one girl from the Wynton Marsalis ad looks like. I agree though, the Bob Dylan ad is refreshingly stark.

i really hope you aren't serious. the clickwheel cant be seen because the contrast is up too high (duh.. i mean, look at that shot), and in the beggining of the close up, you can see the clickwheel there faintly. what is more interesting is how the ipod is off. you would think they would want to show it on (especially because she is supposedly listening to it)

I don't think Dylan has any issues with mp3 or aac formats, hes commenting more on the fact that modern music is dull, uninteresting and uniform. He's probably got an iPod but its full of Byers and The Band of something.

Although he did recently say he doesn't see why people should'nt get music for free as it 'ain't worth anything anyway'.

Also, I know someone said money talks, its more use as an ad for his album, the guy has toured for so long i can't imagine money has any actual value to him, I wouldn't be surprised if he had more than McCartney(pre-divorce settlement).

We all know Jobs is a Dylanologist anyway.

He doesn't have more than McCartney. Unfortunately.

I think this ad is perfect, nobody wants to see a rainbow of colours coming out of Bob Dylans ass. And it sure beats the Eminem ad, not hard to do given he's an absolute c**k, but still.
