what is it with all these california stores? don't you guys have enough? we need one in austin, there is a massive population of mac users here. shoot, they have 2 in Dallas, and that place sucks compared to austin. apple needs to get on the ball with it's retail store strategy

It does seem like there are quite a few in California. Aren't there 3 within 30 minute driving distance? One in Pasadena, Glendale, Downtown... Are there more that I don't know about?
According to the map, it is not actually ON the 3rd Street Promenade, rather one block east. I wonder if it will get as much foot traffic.

Kinetics lesson: rate x time = distance.
Practical application: No matter how many Apple Stores there are in the Los Angeles area, it takes aleph 0 time to get to the closest one because L.A. traffic is moving at epsilon miles per hour, where epsilon approaches 0. In other words, the more Apple Stores the merrier. And since everyone in Los Angeles County is a rich movie star or record producer (or just about to be discovered by one), there are lots of people with disposable income, ripe targets for those pretty Apple Stores.
I think the map just has the dot in the wrong spot, since the address is on 3rd street.

you do realize that now Apple will have 20% of their stores in CA?
Why not put one downtown in like Westlake center. hmmm that would be nice:p

That place is already way to freaking crowded.(reminds me of driving in LA) Putting it in the TO janss mall is only slightly better, but at least it would be more appropriate. TO Janss mall is owned by the Macerich REIT whose ticker is 'MAC'!

Oh gosh. We were talkin' before to go see grand canyons, and now it looks like we should really get out to see them. A good reason to go to grand canyons ... to get from there then to go to Santa Monica to queue another day in an other Apple Store opening. I think i'll go to target to buy more memory to my camera. :D

You guys in austin have no right to complain -- you have Buster's BBQ (of course that is quite a ways away from downtown Austin), which is far tastier than the Apple Store :D

All I want is an Apple Store in Oregon. Like next door. That would be sweet. The closest to me right now is Seattle.
I don't care where the Apple Store is in Oregon--if it's in Ontario or Burns, I'm there. Portland would probably be a better fit though.

Apple needs a retail store in McAllen TX. It's right on the border, next to a town with a population of somewhere around 1 million. There are so many people here who drive Jaguars, H2's, Corvettes, and other nice cars.
The money is here. The demand is here. The local mall, which sucks IMHO, is one of the biggest money making malls in Texas, or America... I'm not sure which, but it gets so many people from across the border...
And these people carry cash, and lots of it...

I don't know how I can phrase this without being uber-offensive, but here goes.
I don't think that is Apple's main demographic.
To be honest neither is the Pacific Northwest :(

In fact I do! The Apple Store at Aspen Grove isn't doing much, Apen Grove is essentially a glorified strip mall. The Apple Store at Cherry Creek (the real mall) serves me just fine :D
Now, of course, there's just the little matter of combining our efforts to create the most magnificent force of telekenetic power ever imagined, and take Buster's Bar B Que out of the middle of nowhere in Texas and put it in an upscale strip mall (and vice versa, with the Apple store)
In any case, you obviously haven't been to Buster's Bar-B-Que (http://bustersbbq.citysearch.com/1.html), which is one of the only good things in Texas. It's out in the middle of nowhere, and they only make one big batch of BBQ a day, which is usually fully depleted by about noon. Truly the most life-affirming food ever created :D
The products of the Apple Store can be ordered online, Buster's BBQ cannot :p
also: Fell lucky that even though you reside in Texas, you at least live in Austin, the only city slighty worth seeing (as well as hometown to director Wes Anderson!)

Apple could make a killing... They have a multi-lingual OS, and tons of people with loads of cash... The local CompUSA can't keep a top of the line G4 on display, because they have so few, and people, artists, from Mexico come and buy them. The BestBuy is PACKED every weekend. So many people from across the border come to buy technology, and Apple is missing out...

i doubt they'd want to buy a computer from apple they don't have very good foreign tech support plus apple really wants a bigger market share in the US before moving to other countries

in L.A. you need more than thrity minutes to travel five miles in a car. and if your around a popular area, just going around the block can take you that long. L.A. sucks when your driving.

I was in Santa Monica today so I stopped by the store location. The map at Apple's Apple Store Third Street Promenade (http://www.apple.com/retail/thirdstreetpromenade/) page makes it look like the store is on Fourth Street or on the east side of Third Street, but it's actually on the west side of Third Street, halfway down the block south of Wilshire Blvd. Third Street, by the way, is 3 blocks from the Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica beach.
And now a Doctor Q exclusive: the first ever peek inside the store. The windows are covered but there is a slight crack between the doors, so I put my camera against the crack and got the photo below. I could see an Exit sign and what looks like a hallway in the back. The store doesn't seem to be set up yet.

well its a given....everyone wants an apple store close to them. Reality is it cant happen, apple doesnt have the resources and honestly doesnt sell the volume nation wide to support it.
as to the texas posters...you may like austin better than dallas, but dallas is ranked 3rd or 4th in the nation for the countries best shopping. it gets the high end stores that there may only be 4 of in the country. Thats why they got an apple store...that and the fact that half of austin is students and cant usually buy computers often. Plus its a smaller market in general. DFW has millions of people, and just in the actual city of houston we have 2 million. austin last i heard hadnt hit 500K.
and as for a store in McAllen...uh, the richs Mexicans come all over the state..the richest to dallas and houston for the high end shopping. i doubt McAllen has a Fendi, Versace, or Louis Vuitton stores for them :p so they will be in houston or dallas anyway

fine...assuming that there is NO TRAFFIC (only like at 3am lol) it would theoretically take me 30 minutes give or take another 10 to get to any of the apple stores in Los Angeles.
From where i live the grove (and now santa monica) are the closest and it takes me about 15-30 minutes depending on which way i go and what time of day it is and how hard it is to find a place to park.

Here's the view from the front of the Apple Store, looking directly across the street.
It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of Apple customers spend time "testing" the zoom lenses on the cameras Apple has on display.
I wonder if Apple and Victoria's Secret will do any kind of joint marketing, such as co-promoting Panther-print nighties?

It's good to live in LA. :)
Seriously, though, it may seem odd to have all these apple stores in the LA area, but you have to realize the sheer immensity of the population of the area. LA city itself has something like 4.5 million people, which is something like the 7th largest city in the world, 2nd only to NY in the US. And LA County is the largest metropolitan area in the US, possibly the world, with something like 10 million in the suburban sprawl.
Also, the ones up near silicon valley and Apple HQ should be self-explanatory.
So, maybe when you look at the numbers, it makes a bit more sense for all of you non Californians. ;)

In May Apple announced that it would be opening 20 new stores in the next year. If you look at Apple's job postings on its own site and at monster.com, it is clear where 18 of those 20 stores will be. The three already opened since May are the Chestnut Hill store, the Chicago store, and the Boca Raton store. Santa Monica and Walnut Creek will open on July 11th and 12th respectively. A November date was announced by the mall in Aventura, Florida for a store there. The others with no announced opening date are: Seattle, WA; Richmond, VA; Burlingame, CA; Tucson, AZ; Lyndhurst, OH; Portland, OR; Alpharetta, GA; Skokie, IL; Corte Madera, CA; Marlton, NJ; and the two Flagship stores in Tokyo and San Francisco. Apple is obviously committed to openings in large population centers.

No, there isn't one in downtown LA. And, there probably won't be for quite some time, as downtown, unfortunately, is one of the poorest areas in Los Angeles except for a very few skyscrapers-but horrible for retail.
There are some good restaurants, if you can find them, like the Original Pantry.

If you mean the Seattle store, I don't think it is meant to be a flagship store on the scale of Chicago, New York, or LA. It is supposed to be in the University Village, but I don't know Seattle well enough to know what kind of area that is.

Ick. People rave about the Pantry but I don't get it. Felipe's--across from Union Station--that's a great place. Anyway, you're right that downtown LA doesn't fit the "profile" of places Apple puts their stores. Although, have you seen the igloo things the homeless live in (hmm...then are they really homeless?) over by Staples Center? They look like great big AirPort Extreme base stations so maybe they'd dig the Apple style.

you must be talking about Dome Village. It's a place for homeless individuals looking for a job to live at. Even if they wanted to buy an Apple computer i'm sure they either don't have the money for it and if they do they're certainly not gonna spend it on a Mac.

Hope the store's a hit with the U of Washington crowd. Yeah, Seattle is on my list of cities to get back to. It has been far too many years since I made it up there. Two kids have a way of cutting your travel time short. San Francisco IS a great place! Probably too many great things to do with many far cooler people than me. I would love to see if the new store is different in its format. So if you go and can post some pictures it would be great. I'm trying to find some clues to what are the last two of the twenty new locations Apple has said it will open up in the new year, so if anyone has a solid rumor I'd love to hear it. I posted the first 18 earlier in this thread (from Apple's job listings on monster.com and its own site), if anyone is interested. I'm pretty sure they are all solid. Apple's retail strategy is pretty risky, but I think it can also be an important part of what takes them to a new level in sales. Anyway - whoever is going to Santa Monica or Walnut Creek - enjoy.

Oh, I see the promos for the Rising. At first, I thought some random lady (she didn't have an apple shirt on or anything) was just approaching people at random and took advantage of the fact that there was a huge line of mostly stationary people to get exposure for her band, The Rising, until I realized they were doing the thing with Less Than Jake. Somewhat disappointed, since I didn't get to see the concert, but then, with everyone else's indecision...

Many people think its odd that Apple opens so many stores in the Los Angeles area, within tens of miles of each other. Well, how 'bout one within 10 feet of another? Next door to the new Santa Monica store is a Hennessey and Ingalls art and architecture book store, which has been on the Third Street Promenade for 20 years. But they are moving to a new location in Santa Monica, leaving the Apple store next door to a vacant store about the same size.
As long as Apple has stores all over L.A., I think they should snap up this prime location and open another Apple Store there. We already know it is a good spot for both local and tourist shoppers. Having two Apple Stores, next door to each other, would increase competition. If you don't like Apple's $149 price for an iSight at the Promenade store, you can check if Promenade II has a lower price. And if one store is out of stock on an item you want, what could be more convenient than another potential supply 10 paces away!
(This all seemed like a good idea when I thought of it this morning. But maybe I stayed up too late at the store last night so my brain is still having processor glitches this morning. In any case, we'll see if Apple takes my advice.)

Hey man you should visit! SanFran is a great city, lots of stuff to do, cool people :)
The U-District is by no means "out of the way". It is significantly closer to downtown Seattle than the Bellevue store. The University Village shopping mall where the new store will be located is a very posh mall. It is accessible to both the academic crowd from the University, and to the well-to-do crowd that lives in that area; the perfect clientele for an Apple Store.
