Went to my local Apple Store(The Westchester,NY) today and luckily they had the silver 80GBs. I was considering the 160, but I was too anxious and wanted it then so I got the 80 :). Its really, really nice. I love the new interface. I would have loved the Touch, but 16Gb doesn't even cover my music, let alone my Videos. I really don't mind watching videos on the smaller screen and I like to have all my music with me all the time(I have an 8GB 2GB Nano for when I don't), so I went for this. I like it a lot. Now for pics, will some more later.

AWESOME!

i didn't even think about them updating the Sync screen too.

Seems like a from-the-ground-up interface update.

Are the menu's smooth and spunky even w/ the content on the right side?

Na that's the older Universal Dock, it does come with an adapter for use in the Universal Dock, though, as all iPods(Not Shuffle I think) do.

I'm not sure, but it does have the "look" that the iPhone and iMac screens have. But I'm sure Apple would have noted if it had a glass screen.

Do the old docks allow you to output video from the iPod Classic? I am only saying this because the new dock is going to take another 3 weeks and I really want the ability to output video now.

Sep 6, 2007, 07:36 PM
All my music has art, I can't stand the blank album cover in iTunes coverflow so if I buy a CD not on iTunes or whatever then I get the image from Amazon and add it in. But if it didn't it would display a blank album cover like it does in iTunes or on the iPhone. Coverflow is good, I'm putting some mroe movies on it right now so I can't play with it. When its done syncing I'll do more photos with my 2G nano and give more on the interface.

I can't believe Westchester got the 160GBs before the 5th Ave. store. WTF???

Got to play with the new nanos and the 80GB classic. Not too impressed with the coverflow; there's a 2-3 second lag if you scroll more than 20 or so albums. But the 80GB is beautifully thin, and the brushed aluminum isn't as off-putting as I expected (but not as pretty as the old shiny black).

Hopefully by this time tomorrow, I'll have my 160GB classic in hand. It'll be the first time since I started buying iPods that my whole media collection will fit on an iPod out of the box! Woot! :apple:

Did they yank Notes from the iPod Classic? There is no mention of Notes on the Apple site.

I read at Roughlydrafted.com they guy thinks notes and other synchronization will be enabled with Leopard, so if Notes was taken out then maybe it will come back after Leopard is released. (same goes for iPhone, finally synchronization to the desktop.)

I went to my local CT Apple store today and discovered that it was bustling with people who had come to check out the new iPods. They had TONS of new nanos and classics on display to listen to and drool over.

Firstly, the new Nanos are really, really great. Once you see the thing in person, you'll never say "phatty" again. It's absolutely tiny, and WAFER thin. It seriously feels like you're holding a saltine in your hand XD It feels great in operation, and you'll understand better why they designed it like they did once it's in your hands-- it's really kinda cute. If it held 16GB, I'd seriously consider getting it over the Classic.

Let me answer a few questions about the Classic. They had the 80 gigs on display, both silver and black. They do look slicker and thinner in person than they do in the photos. Personally I like the look of the silver over the matte black. I'm still not sure I prefer the look or feel of either to the clear, glossy plastic of the last generation, but the advantage is not having to worry about scratching the aluminum as much. It also looks as though changing the battery would be easier and less destructive, if you were so inclined to do it yourself. Unfortunately, the backs do appear to be exactly the same as the old models, and just as prone to scratching (Get an invisible shield!). I'm almost 100% sure that the screen is plastic-- not glass-- so you'll probably still want a screen protector for it.

As for the less sensitive click wheel issue that came up before-- I noticed exactly what you're talking about, and I'm pretty sure I know what's up. It's not that the click wheel is any less sensitive-- it's that the iPod is lagging from processing all of the images and animations in the new interface. Here's the catch: the nano does NOT have this problem, because it uses Flash memory. Because of the slower nature of the hard drive in the Classic, there is a bit of delay now and then, which you might find yourself interpreting as a click wheel issue. It's an unfortunate trade-off, but the new interface is nice. I looked for an option to disable the split screen animations, but there doesn't seem to be one.

Hope that helps!

Oh, and it only shows the thumbnails when scrolling by album-- not all the time. I don't think there's a way to turn that off, either.

Lovely photos - thanks!

It leaves me thinking that the silver classic is possibly the best looking iPod ever. (The Touch just looks a bit too plasticky IMHO, based on the pictures on the Apple website).

This new model has a kind of 'Porsche' style to it, compared with the fragile plastic look they've had in the past. Although I know that the older models aren't fragile - my iPod Photo is still in excellent shape.

With this new 'Classic' model, I'm curious about how secure the headphone socket is - it doesn't look like headphones fit in very snugly - is this the case?

These photos are making it much harder for me to decide which new iPods to get. I will limit my self to 2. Which combination would be better?

8GB nano & 16GB touch

I already have a shuffle, an old 8GB nano, and a 30GB 5(.0)G, and I will be keeping all of those.

How many ipods do you really need?

If it was me, I'd keep the shuffle for gym use, sell the nano and 30gb, and then buy the touch and 80gb classic. If you don't need the full 80gb, stick with the 30gb and only get the ipod touch.

PorpoiseMuffins
Sep 8, 2007, 09:31 AM
Why would you buy both the touch and the classic? It just doesn't sound practical to me. The touch is thinner, but it's otherwise the same size/larger than the classic. I can see getting a shuffle or a nano if you really needed something smaller to carry now and then, but even then I couldn't see myself spending the money on more than one iPod. Correct me if I'm reading you wrong, but here's an idea: consider saving the money, or, even better, give it to charity if you really have so much of it that you can't figure out what to do with it! Personally, I hate having little 'trophies' lying around if they're things that I don't use regularly.

Considering that you already have the older iPods, I would think the decision would come down to whether you want the space of the classic, or the novelty of the touch. The new nanos are really fun and a lot like their larger classic counterparts, so if you asked me I'd say get the touch and the nano.

Thanks for the replies, but after going in to my local Apple Store, and seeing the new nanos, I cannot resist. It is impossible to criticize the design when you have held one in your hand. I got the silver 80GB too, it's lovely! I went into the Apple store leaning slightly towards the silver but still unsure, but when i saw the silver next to the black, hands down silver won. The black is boring, I liked it with the glossy 5th gen finish more :)

So just wanted to say i have had 3 ipod before - a 1st gen 5gb, a 20gb 4th gen black and white screen and a shuffle which i donated to a friend.
As my music library is really gotten big recently, and i don't like choosing what to take with me i decided to get the iPod Classic 80gb - the apple store in regent street only had the black one in stock so i decided to go with that.

When i got it home it was awesome packaged up - lovely iphone style box and wonderfully packaged. I plugged it in, and os x wouldn't recognise it. So i did a restore and it worked - added some music. Everytime i try to get to the video section on the iPod the screen goes green and the ipod freezes and needs to be reset. The dock connector is very loose and the the clickwheel doesn't register the movements properly. I am not very impressed to be honest.

You got a dud--bring it back to the store, they should exchange it, I would think.

About the new GUI, i think it seems okay (havent touched one yet, though). But I don't really see the point of it, I mean if they're gonna split the screen, then I'd rather have "Now Playing" to the right. At least when something is playing, those pictures just seem pointless to me.

Yes, it plays games but those you bought for your 5.5 generation wouldn't sync on it the iPod classic... That's what i heard!

No, all iPods come with the standard Apple earphones:

wouldn't it be great if that metal face would work on the previous ipod videos?

This is a very sexy machine! I sold my 80gig white ipod the other day and am about to get a black 80gig classic. I'm proper gutted that I don't get a velvet-sock type thing with it though, that thing was amazingly handy. Looks like i will have to get the wifey to make me something soft and protective. Also, i'm dubious as to how front scratch protectors will look on these new metal fronts, they'll stand out more.

Thanks for the pics though, really appreciate seeing it. The photos on Apples website really do it no justice at all!

Having been incredibly indecisive since the new iPods were announced I finally decided to go for a 80GB Classic in Silver. I went for the classic over the touch simply because of capacity (I have about 30GB of music and videos which whilst not massive is too big to carry round at once on the touch) and chose the 80GB because I preferred the slightly thinner case.
I didn't really choose it for aesthetics but I have to say it is absolutely gorgeous - the silver with white wheel is an almost exact match for my new slimline keyboard and the slightly rounded edges and rock solid construction gives it a real air of quality (right down to the slight indentation in the middle of the touch wheel so you can operate it easier without looking). Even the box oozes quality and luxury. The screen is bright and clear and the new option to zoom vids into 4:3 ratio (at the expense of the side bits) is a great feature. The new interface is also fantastic (with the exception of the previously mentioned coverflow annoyance of splitting up compilation albums by artist!).
In short, the classic is just that - a true classic amongst iPods and if you're thinking of getting one, don't hesitate: you won't regret it :)

Excellent pics. I love digital photography!

Anyway, I purchased a black 160 classic yesterday to replace my OH, SO OLD 5G 60GB. :) I really like at least having the ability to now search through content, especially since I'll be filling up this new one with my whole music collection.
