View Full Version : Steve Wozniak asks to cut in line @ Apple Store

I just got my iPhone this morning at the Apple Store in Valley Fair (San Jose, CA) and Steve Wozniak was there.
I arrived at 3:50am and Mr. Woz was chopping it up with the manager at Apple. Then around 4:30am he politely asked everyone in line if he could be the 1st to get his iPhone at the store and everyone said yes.
(Pic taken on 1st gen edge iPhone)
http://djrayz.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/1.jpg
Then at 5:54am the store decided to start selling iPhones (1 hour and 6 mins ahead of schedule)...I wasn't complaining :)
I got a cool shot with him
(Pic taken on my new iPhone 3G S, but had a n00b person taking the pic)
http://djrayz.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/2.jpg
Then I got him to sign my box...I get the special Woz Edition
(Pic also taken on my new iPhone 3G S)

I was about the 15th person in line. I *heart* APPLE!

Woz paid for his iPhone. He said he didn't want to have one shipped to his house and be around a few people. He wanted to be around everyone and enjoy the energy.
The cool thing was that everyone started cheering him as he entered the store as to be the 1st at that store to purchase the iPhone 3G S.
I'm happy they started selling early.

That is really cool!!! Based on what I have read and seen, he seems like a very humble and all around good guy. It says a lot when a multi-billionaire takes time out of his day to go spend time with the customers that made the company he co-founded successful, and couldn't be happier to do it.

I wouldn't let hin cut either, I would have been mad if I walked up after waiting in line and was told the person in front of me bought the last one. And the woz had cut.

Am I the only one who can't see all these pictures?
Also, it's a little odd that Wozniak had to buy his new iPhone today. I thought top APPLE guys and development guys had them for months to 'test'. It's not like they don't test the final version.

Well Woz isn't working at Apple anymore so maybe that's why, but I'm sure he could have called Steve Jobs or anyone else at Apple and got one, but on page 2 you have the explanation from the OP.

Are you (and others of similar persuasion) serious?
He could have gotten one hand-delivered [probably a few weeks ago] for free. Perhaps he did this because he knew it would amuse a few dorks.

He cracks me up. He gets sheets of $2 bills perforated and padded just to mess with people, up to and including the Secret Service.
http://www.woz.org/letters/general/78.html
Then he calmly said that they don't make them like this. I sat for a long time silent and he repeated his statement. I said "you mean, on sheets?" These two $2 bills were attached to each other and perforated. You can purchase $1, $2, and now $5 bills from the Bureau of Printing and Engraving on sheets. The sheets come in sizes of 4, 16, and 32 bills each. I buy such sheets of $2 bills. I carry large sheets, folded in my pocket, and sometimes pull out scissors and cut a few off to pay for something in a store. It's just for comedy, as the $2 bills cost nearly $3 each when purchased on sheets. They cost even more at coin stores.

Another possible answer to the whole "Why didn't Woz just get one for free?" issue:
I seem to recall reading an interview around the time of the original iPhone release, that Woz was, indeed, offered a complimentary iPhone at that time. (He claims on his personal website (http://www.woz.org/letters/general/53.html) that he is still on the books as an Apple employee and still draws a nominal paycheck, although he has absolutely no day-to-day involvement with the company.) He turned the offer down because he wanted to experience buying his like everybody else.
I also think I remember reading somewhere (but I cannot locate it right now) that he usually buys (pays for) one of just about everything Apple makes.

Seriously! I can't believe no one asked him to dance. It seems like he's a good enough guy that he might have actually done it. Call it what you like, PR move, just plain fun, or mixing it up with the locals, this story is really cool. :)

I actually switched to white...but not for the autograph. LOL.
The next person that wanted to take a pic with him had a black iPhone and Wozniak went around the Apple store looking for a silver pen so he could sign their black iPhone box.
LOL....that was me! I have the black box with the black Sharpie signature. The silver Sharpie arrived 15 seconds later. :p

I agree, actually. Jobs is by all accounts an a-hole (Though perhaps he has mellowed in recent years, especially after his health issues), but Woz doesn't care and doesn't let those things bother him. Woz had the idea and designed the machine, and Jobs had the business sense to know how to market it. It is the combination of the two of them that allowed the Apple ][ to take off.
For those of you hating on Woz in this thread, shame on you. Without Woz, you probably wouldn't even be posting in this forum, because the Personal Computer as we know it would either not exist or be radically different.

Yes, I've read that he hacked one too but he didn't mention anything. I also heard he hacked Kathy Griffin's iPhone on her on her show in the back of a limo. (First gen, the one that could be jailbroken by visiting a site with a special image on it.)

Before we bought our first Apple, my husband came home from work one day raving about some guy who came to talk to them about Wi-Max and future technology... it was Woz! Very informal meeting with tons of information. He kept going back to talking about Apple and the "Apple Concept". My husband was really impressed. meh,
It would have been cool if he paid the Iphones for everybody there? he is a billionaire right?
I doubt he's a billionaire.
He didn't pick up Pixar from Lucas at a garage sale price and sell it to Disney, or get mega millions for NeXT when Apple bought it. He likes to have fun with his money too (ala the US festival) and fund new businesses, none of which are rich and famous, at least yet.
Hey, but he earned it.
If Wozniak wanted to experience the same 'thrill' as all the little people queuing up to buy, then he should have joined the queue. Pointless gesture if you play the 'do you know who I am' card to push in front.
So he queues up and all the people in front don't get to meet him. He's having fun with it, lighten the ef up.
I would pay to see Woz. Because you wouldn't doesn't make you better, just snarkier.

READ how apple treat his client: I have been ordering the Iphone 3GS and receive a message saying it will be delivered on the 24th, so I called Apple customer support, they have been very nice, cancelled my order and told me to reorder it online to pickit up at any apple store. than apple called me to have the confirmation that I will go and pickit up, than I receive a reminder email.
went at NorthStar mall apple store in San Antonio, TX at 07:00 AM this morning, hundreds of people were allready in line waiting, so I left.
i cam back at noon, and was the second in line.
arriving in the store, they told me they cannot do anything as I am a business ATT customer!!!
being a mac addict since 1987, I could not belive the apple "manager" could act the way he has been, he really did not care of anything.
and of course there is no way to complain by email on apple website
what a great experience, NEVER AGAIN

may be some apple store manager should go to ATT to learn how to treat clients

Woz is Apple famous.

In other words, what you were standing in line for today, would not have existed if Woz was not part of Apple in their early years.

I feel there are some things that need to be clarified, so here goes...
First off, the store manager approached us at the front of the line at 330am or so and informed us that Steve Wozniak had arrived. She asked us if it was ok if they let him enter the store first just to get pictures taken. Of course we all agreed. He wanted to wait in line with the rest of us, but security as well as Apple store management wanted him in/out as soon as possible. When she approached the rest of the crowd, she retold the announcement differently and it made it sound as if he had arrived and immediately wanted to be first.
Second, they formed two lines (preordered/preauthorized, and regular folks) ten minutes prior to opening. At 6am, Apple employees lined up in the center of the store and clapped as they welcomed Woz and the rest of us literally 30 seconds after him.
Third, although I was second in line, I was the fifth to enter the store because they accepted preordered/preauthorized customers first. My name was missing on the preauthorized list, and they accepted three additional people before letting me in. My purchase/activation total time was under 4 minutes, yet Steve's total time was longer due to his purchase of 3 iPhones and some accessories for friends that accompanied him. Technically, I received my phone before he did.
Fourth, I've met a lot of famous people in my life, yet I never viewed or treated them any different. Woz was the first person EVER that got me "teeny bopper" excited for and to see and meet him was a great experience. It might have been due to the fact that he was responsible for changing the world with a single invention. That might have something to do with it! Again, he was friendly and extremely approachable. I couldn't believe that he was walking all over the store with my iPhone box in hand asking every employee for a silver Sharpie.
I'll upload some pictures later. Let me sign up for a Flicker account.

So, according to Woz Beard's post @155, Woz DIDN'T ask to be the first in line--the store manager (as well as other store personnel, probably) wanted him to be first, so they could get pictures of him entering their store first, just ahead of the people entering just behind him (good PR for their store, and the kind of photo opp I've seen before, maybe even with Woz on another occasion at another store), and security wanted Woz first so they wouldn't have to worry about him for an undetermined period of time waiting outside the store. Woz saw their reasoning, said OK, and then the store manager screwed it up when she asked the people in line, by misrepresenting Woz as being the one to ask, maybe so he'd take any heat, not her.
So no more accusing Woz of being an elitist. He's about as far from being an elitist as a famous person can get, without being silly about it.

Excellent story. Woz is one of the few people of any level of celebrity I'd consider talking to.
Omg, it's great that he's so cool he just came along and pushed in front of people who'd been there for hours/days..!?
If Bill Gates did that at the launch of one of microsoft's products you'd all be laughing at him and saying how up himself and how much of a dick he is.. just pointing something else.
Excellent research. Since your post isn't based on facts, why are you here?

...
He built the Apple II virtually alone and created the personal computer as we know it today.
No, he did not build the Apple II "alone," and even with the Apple I he needed help from 6502 co-creator Chuck Peddle to get the machine running.
I like Woz; there is no denying his brilliance. But you folks need to realize he didn't invent the personal computer singlehandedly. That's Apple Revisionism. The ancestors of the machine you are now using were born from the genius and passion of many different men and women.

––––––––––––––––––––
People should read before posting comments-
From Wikipedia-
Stephen Gary "Woz" Wozniak (born August 11, 1950 in San Jose, California) is an American computer engineer who founded Apple Computer (now Apple Inc.) with Steve Jobs. His inventions and machines are credited with contributing significantly to the personal computer revolution of the 1970s. Wozniak created the Apple I and Apple II computers in the mid-1970s.
Maybe we would have had personal computers without the two Steves, but that is moot.
One ex-girlfriend was Kathy Griffin, so is it any wonder he would jailbreak her iPhone?
Wozniak founded a new venture called CL 9, which developed and brought the first programmable universal remote control to market in 1987. Wozniak also taught fifth-grade students.
While he may not have made Forbes' billionaire lists, he is wealthy compared to most of us. Jobs is listed at 5.7 billion. Personally, I'd rather have my good health.

What research? equalsabracket was offering an opinion. and to be honest, i think it's accurate. if steve balmer or bill gates showed up at the launch of any microsoft product and then proceeded to get in line in front of a bunch of customers, you would say that it was obnoxious. showing up is cool. budding in line is not, especially because it may have meant that some actual customer went home empty handed. he should have entered the back of the line like every other person on the planet. just because you've put him on a pedestal doesn't mean everybody else has.

That's a bit much. If not Jobs/Woz, someone else would have 'stolen' XEROX's PARC. :D
You're confusing the Apple I with the Mac. Woz didn't work on the Mac, which used ideas *given* to Apple by Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Research Center) [and to Microsoft, too].

First, post #155 (reiterated in #168, only 3 posts above equalsabracket) stated that Woz didn't ask to be fronted, the store management did. And people were asked if they minded. Doesn't sound like an ego trip to th efront of the line to me. Sure, equalsabracket is entitled to an opinion, but if it isn't based on readily available facts, then what good is it?
Secondly, Woz is not Gates, Balmer or even Jobs. Nobody expects those egos would fit through the front door of a store, nor would they have to.
Finally, we're talking launch day of a hyped product. People are there for their dose of Apple geekdom. To anybody familiar withthe history of Apple Computer Inc., Woz would be a very thick layer of icing on that cake.

Impossible. I got there at 5:00 and was about number 50 in line. From accounts I've read he was there at 3:30 (or earlier) which would have meant he would have been in the first 20 probably. As long as the person in line where he WOULD have been got a phone nobody beyond that point would have been affected. Even if they only had 49 phones and I did not get one cause I was #50 his movement in line would not have caused that.

Warms my heart. That's just who Woz is.
Get off of our website.
THE MAN INVENTED THE PERSONAL COMPUTER AS WE KNOW IT TODAY.
Because of his contribution, he gets to do virtually anything that he wants to do and lives the ultimate life of happiness; he gets to work with anything and anyone he wants.
I assume you'll retort with, "Oh, I could have done the same."
Great post. I agree 100%.
Woz shouldn't even have to ask to cut in line. There would be no Apple if it wasn't for him! Cut the man some slack. Be happy that he was there (instead of another Apple Store or just at home). He didn't have to be there if he didn't want to. I'm no fanboy (not even close), but I have the utmost respect for Woz. I've met him, and he is a gentleman and a true class act.

I would guess that he would love to do that, but he tends to be really busy. He lectures constantly and spends lots of time on other things that gets him out in the public. I bet a book on Steve Wozniak and Paul Allen focused on what they did for both leaders (SJ & BG) would be interesting and a good read.
Both the Woz and Paul are very talented individuals.
IAWTP
1983 wasn't a vintage year for computer company co-founders.
Paul Allen won a bout with cancer and decided not to continue with Microsoft.
And Woz returned from his 1981 airplane crash injuries to rejoin Apple, but by his choice only as a product development engineer, just to keep his hand in.

Lol @ all those people in here claiming that Woz is a billionaire. Cite your sources or gtfo with your ridiculous speculations.
And to those morons who have been too lazy to read the thread, and then jumped to ridiculous conclusions about Woz having to get to the back of the line:
1) He would have gotten there before most of the line anyway, and out of *politeness* stayed out of the line to talk with the store manager, for whom his presence would have been a very big deal. If you think it's reasonable to ask somebody who arrived at 3:30 to join a queue behind somebody who arrived at 5:30 simply because they were being courteous, then frankly you're either just a troll or a total douchebag. Either way, diagf.
2) The request for him to jump queue was made by the store manager for security and PR purposes, not by him.
3) We have yet to hear of a single solitary person in the crowd objecting to this. If it didn't bother them, then why in the hell is it bothering you?
If anybody in computing has earned the right to be treated with a little respect, it is Woz. If you're really the kind of jerk who would seriously tell a guy who has had an absolutely enormous impact on your life and that of everybody else in the world to go get to the back of a line for a product from a company that he started, then I'm honestly fairly appalled at what a ****** human being you must be.

If I were the shop manager and I see him arrive at a reasonable time I would put his box aside and let him talk to the folks in the line. It's kind of normal everybody in that line wants to talk to him and take pictures with him.

I think it's sad that someone uses their celebrity to get to the front of the line. He took advantage of all those star-struck people who had probably been waiting a while.
I understand that this guy co-founded Apple and he is a part of the computer history books, but it's not like he has anything to do with what they are working on now. He just uses he celebrity to get to the head of the line to purchase the same phone everyone else did. He is a person just like everyone else in line.

Truth is it's hard to say, Woz was responsible for the Danger Hiptop (he founded Danger Inc), better known as the T-Mobile Sidekick. When the iPhone rumors started to fire up he bailed from Danger, need I take a guess why?

First, and I can't believe all you experts didn't notice this, but those photos are clearly photoshop fakes... and not very convincing ones at that! My 83 year old Grandmother can even tell they're fakes and she's been dead going on TEN (count em) TEN years now!
Second, please don't tell me that with ten+ pages of replies not one single person has brought up the fact that (just like Paul McCartney) Steve 'The Woz' Wozniak died over 25 years ago... twenty nine to be exact... If you take the time to look it up, you will see reports of an 'Airplane Accident' that the Woz was involved in... It was widely reported and accepted that the Woz survived the accident... but insiders know the deep dark truth...
...Woz is Dead...
If you want to read about the 'reported' incident... Go ahead, its on wikis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Wozniak) in almost any language you like but what I'm about to tell you now... will never be found in a wiki not for very long anyway.
In the shock of the moment, Steve Jobs not knowing what would become of the company he and Woz founded... There were banks and stockholders to answer to not to mention the employees and the public at large!
Steve, with the help of the board of directors had to act and act quickly! The combed the campuses far and wide but couldn't find anyone who could even remotely pass for Woz... Then when all hope was lost, they found a guy camping out on the street waiting in line to buy some Grateful Dead tickets and ... well... the rest is history.
Steve, out of guilt has even planted little hints in various products both hardware and software about this entire dark and twisted episode in the history of Apple...
Some of the more famous and and easy to find hints include:
The startup sound used on the very first Mac sold just 3 short years after 'the incident' when played in reverse and slowed down by a factor of 4 will sound a bone chilling 'I buried woz' in what is unmistakably Steve Jobs own voice. When confronted with this years later... Steve said.. I didn't say 'I buried woz' I said 'I bettered woz'.... Since I knew then that my leadership over the creation of the Mac was head and shoulders better than the Apple computer woz kluged together and wanted to make it known!
Serial numbers on the 78 models of a special (very) limited edition run of the now famous Macintosh were 32IF00001-32IF00078... The 32IF of course a clear nod to The Woz, that had he not died he would have been 32 years old. What made them special was the fact that the cases were 24k gold and diamond studded.
All were gifted to the board of directors and others involved with this coverup. A nurse know now only as 'Nurse X' who was on staff at the hospital at the time Woz was rushed in to the emergency room fell on some hard times and tried to sell the Macintosh with the 'unique' serial number on ebay... Shortly after the listing was made it was sold on Buy Out and the ebay account of the seller was closed permanently... The whereabouts of Nurse X? One has to wonder...
The black apple letterhead and business cards... Jobs, being quite full of himself didn't actually like the fact that this Woz stand in actually came to the company and worked (or pretended to anyway). So, to show this stand in who's the top dog, Jobs had all the business cards, letterhead and other printed items with the Apple logo printed in all black. Instead of the vibrant and colorful logo everyone else got to use.
A few years later an enterprising reporter brought up this little tidbit a stockholders meeting.. Jobs attempted to dismiss it by saying, "the printer simply ran out of colored inks.... Next!". That reporter can also be found on the national missing persons list.
More... yea there's LOTS more... but I'll leave it an exercise for the reader to find the others.
Anyway... to think all those people in line getting duped by this 'Woz Wannabe' and all you forum defenders... Cracks me up... Had you only known then what you know now.
:apple:
Wait one sec... I think someone's at the doo$*($)^%^*G() %FH*()CN()$(*&%
