View Full Version : gmail "pay it forward"
einsteinium
Jun 18, 2004, 08:26 PM
Hey all - I think we should start a Pay It Forward system for members with gmail invites to spare. I am looking to an invite myself and would be more than happy to pass on any I recieve to any other needing members of Macrumors. I propose you just reply to this post to get your name on the list. If you have invites to spare, send them to the most recent names on the list and once you do receive an invite, edit your post noting so. That way we all can get access to the service.
Thanks
einsteinium

yahoo just upgraded their free account to 100MB. that's plenty as far as i'm concerned. i'm not sure i'm getting what the deal is with signing up with google. you can't just sign up you need an invite from someone? are they still testing it? i've been a yahoo user for a while, the spam blocker works great. and now you can recieve up to 10MB attachments and i think send out the same. sure the ads aren't all that slick, but i'm not spending enough time on webmail for that to really bother me.

Another thing you can try is to buy an invite on eBay. I just bought one for US$1.75. That is very cheap. There's about 3000 of them right now on eBay and they are all going very cheap ending every minute or so. So, if you got 2 bucks and a PayPal account, you are golden.

You only get granted invites on a random basis and when they increase capacity on the system. You (and me) might be lucky that when they set the next batch of invites we'll get a few of them to send to others. But it's not something that you are guaranteed to get. Simply having GMail does not mean that you will be able to invite others.

I know many people don't think its right to pay for accounts that will be free in the future, but they really are cheap since all these invites went out. I picked one up on ebay for £1 on buyitnow, and I'm sure you could get them cheaper if you're willing to wait on normal auctions. £1 for my name @gmail.com is fine by me.
If I get any invites I'll check back here, my girlfriend and best friend are first in line however.
Now does anyone know of a way to use it through pop or imap?
Wes
Jun 20, 2004, 09:52 AM
Don't think POP/IMAP is possible since they use their web-based targetted ads to generate revenue.

I'm dying for one as well, but paying for one on eBay just seems wrong... I'd rather do it the fair way than let people profit from google...
Now does anyone know of a way to use it through pop or imap?
I believe the official answer is that they're looking into it, I'm sure advertising plays a role in how feasible this is, server load probably does as well. I wouldn't expect to see it until gmail goes through it's first major round of public revisions.

Take a look at POP goes the GMail (http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=169789). For Windows only, though. I've read that they are planning to add POP/IMAP support at some point, but not necessarily for free. We just have to wait and see...

That's a request for an invitation, by the way. I've read that Blogger users have been getting invitations, so I started a blog, and I'm going to blog my ass off until I get one. If, however, someone has an invite that he or she would like to share, I'd be greatly appreciative and much obliged to send on any I receive. Thanks much!

I went to gmailswap.com and offered an origami boulder (aka a crumpled piece of paper) for a gmail account. I got one about 5 minutes later. So ya know... if you really want one you might wanna check that out.

This afternoon gmail's servers are still closed to new users... the tension is unbearable! :)
Now people, pay attention. If we're going to do this right, you need to edit your message once you've received an invite, so multiple people aren't inviting the same person. Basically a way of crossing your name off the list...

I just got a gmail account today. Is anybody else having trouble logging in? Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. I often get a javascript pop up telling me to try again later. I know it's in Beta so I'm not using it as my primary e-mail but is this a fluke of the day or is this how it's been since launch? Just curious.

Google and gmail have been flaky for me all morning today. I'm thinking that akamai is under attack again or something, but it could just be a google problem. Once I finally got into gmail, it seems to be working fine.
I've sent out 2 gmail invites so far to folks on this thread. I've offered it to 2 more but I'm waiting to hear from them. To any new gmail users: You may want to wait a day or so to sign up if google is still slow.
Anyone have an open-source Gmail-to-POP3 gateway for the Mac yet? I want to be able to check gmail from within OS X's Mail.app.

I havn't noticed any popups, but sometimes it can't connect.
Another problem is the 'back' button doesn't work always. Suppose your are in inbox, you goto 'sent' folder, and then hit 'back' , it can't load the page.
But I guess it would be fixed once its stable.

I agree. The idea is to look at the order in which people posted asking for an invite. You are supposed to send your invitations to the first people that posted. After you have received an invite, edit your original post to say so, that way people know who to send invitations to next. Just posting a link in the forum completely ruins the whole idea behind this thread.

Jun 22, 2004, 01:15 PM
I really don't want to post links either. The only reason I did is because it seems noone is updating their posts to say that they got invites.
If people were doing this, it wouldn't be a problem.
I've got a few more invites coming. So what do I do? Noone wants me to post links, so someone decide who's next on the list.
I've got 2 invites I think. Or at least one. Who gets it?

This thread is going to turn into one of those threads that start off with "Nude pics leaked from..." and then fill up with people begging to have invitations/photos sent to them by posting their emails. I'm thinking that unless this thread gets closed down or taken way off track, we'll see 200 posts easily with emails, and many of the upcoming posts will be by members with less than 500 posts. :D

I've been giving out some invites. If you're looking to give out invites, start looking for requests at post #32 onwards. Not everyone before #32 has an invite yet, but they've all been offered and either haven't replied yet or already have one and haven't updated their post.
I'm posting this to save others the work to figure out who still needs invites.

Count me in too, I'd like an account to replace my hotmail one which is just too small these days.
An invite from someone would be much appreciated :D
I'd really like a GMail account, too. Even though Hotmail is upping their storage to 250 MB, I think I'd like a different account. The spam I get is really annoying.
Speaking of "paying it forward," why don't people do that with .Mac subscriptions, too? When I finally signed up, I put down the address of a fellow MacRumors member so he could get the discount on his next renewal.

I honestly found gmail a bit underwhelming, Mail and pop/imap is just much more useful. It is far more impressive than any webmail I've used though.

I wouldn't do it out of principle. Besides, this thread seems to be doing the trick. I think most (all?) of the people who asked for invites on the first few pages have been accommodated.

I have 6 gmail accounts I want to give away, but I want something in return. I will give you a gmail account, but in return you have to send my friend an email asking him to never smoke again. (edit: he already wants to stop smoking and i'm just trying to give him extra encouagement)
First come, first serve, I'll reply to private messages with his email address.

Intervenes...Chain mail? Look, somehow he needs to develop some serious dedication to giving up smoking and trying real damned hard to stay off until the cravings etc. are gone. Ask BacktotheMac about how/why to quit smoking in case you think I'm lying....steps out again.
Just curious: How did you guys get the invites in the first place? Are you developers or something?
Well I got mine from demanding...
Actually, I got them through PMs since some people wanted to give them away. Originally, Gmail posts an invite link on the same page as your Gmail inbox that allows you to give out invites. Though I haven't seen it at my inbox page yet.

Take a look at POP goes the GMail (http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=169789). For Windows only, though. I've read that they are planning to add POP/IMAP support at some point, but not necessarily for free. We just have to wait and see...
I wish there was a POP goes the Gmail for mac. I know there will be in the future but I'm impatient now heheh. I love gmail but I hate webmail, I'd be happy for them to embed there ads in my mail or charge me and it does seem google want to implement POP.
In the mean time however I did find gCount (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/23745) which sits in your menu bar and tells you if you have new gmail. v handy.
I have a friend who is desperate for gmail and I have no invites (do you get any if you are invited yourself) yet so if anyone has one spare he would be very grateful.

Sorry you feel that way. Yes, I haven't posted very much, but I have been a member of MacRumors for a year and a half. I love the site, but just don't do too much posting on the message board. I'm not sure why you care very much about one message thread. It's not as if the newbies are tramping all over your message board trying to be annoying. If you've got a problem, why not spend your time reading one of the other few thousand threads on the forum and stop griping about a single thread where very nice MacRumors members are helping other people out. Cool off. Live and let live.

for every 10 people who sign up just to make this one post and then leave, there will be one who stays around and contributes to the community. The other 10 might have annoyed us with a single post, but that's temporary and no big deal. The one person who was drawn to this site by the opportunity to get one of these accounts and then stuck around to really add something will far outweigh the others.

It cuts both ways--if only regulars were to get invites, then only regulars would be giving out invites, and that would mean far fewer invites.
Check out my post status, and I gave out 8 gmail invites.
I would think a regular who wanted a gmail invite would have posted relatively early in this thread and so should have gotten a gmail invite by now.

I'm interested in a gmail account. I will proudly forward invites to other users as well! I've been reading these forums for ages and I decided to finally join.
EDIT: Well there has been some flaming about newbs asking for gmail account. Hopefully I can prove myself an asset to the community. My expertise is corporate networking, hopefully I can help anyone with home networking questions!!! :)

Hi guys, I'd love a gmail account. I'm soooo fed up with hotmail.
My name is Paul Flaherty, my email address is paulflaherty69@hotmail.com ... now you can see why I need a new email address!
Thanks in advance, I promise to pay it forward.

I guess I'm technically a "n00b" but I've had a gmail account for a while and I have one invite left (since they're apparently not refilling invites anymore) so, tpjunkie, if you haven't got one yet let me know and I'll send it along.
I gave my wife an invite but she hasn't sent along her invites to anyone, so I have access to more if anyone is interested.

they seem to have stopped giving out invites. In place of 'invite a friend' is 'new features' which tells me that it is now compatible with Safari! YAY!

They go through phases of giving out invites and then stopping. They give out more when they feel they want to expand the beta.

From what I hear they go through stages of issuing invites and then stopping for a while then issuing more when they want to expand the user base to test.

I'm still waiting guys (hehe, look at my avatar, fits perfectly right now :) ), all the way back in page 7 i requested one.
And now my email service, gawab.com, removed my email account when implementing a new service.
So if someone could email an invite to:
webmaster@EmoOnline.com
then that'd be awesome.
Thanks,

You can pay like 7 bucks a year to get whatever email account you want! I never get spam. What's the big deal? Someone explain it to me.
I got offered 3Dartist at GMail, and I turned it down period. I guess I just dont get it.

I don't mean to be a wet blanket on the thread, but if you've got an invite to give away, why not consider donating it to a member of the U.S. military stationed overseas via http://www.gmail4troops.com ?
