Wait a minute. AT&T didn't say MMS would be available late Summer. They said that Summer would be late, thus giving birth to MMS in the Fall.

Meh,

I've waited this long, what's another month. I really haven't missed MMS functionality too much on the iphone and I've adapted to it, so while it will be nice, its not a huge issue for me.

Ok, got one for you - I'll never use MMS, but the massive increase in traffic it will cause will further cripple my 3G speeds, which have already fallen to below 400 kbps in downtown Boston.

would it really have killed them to make it sept 21st so they actually make their own set deadline.

They're trying to Craiglist people.

"I see you're selling product X for $250."
"Yes sir"
"I'll give you $200"
Uhhhh, I dunno man. I'd really rather just wait for $250"
"Come on. $200 cash, in your hand. Today. Bam. Lets do this."
"Um, I guess so. $200 firm. Fine"
"K, great. See you in a bit"
-- the pair meet up, the seller going out of his way no less --
"Here it is."
"Cool, and here's your $150"
"Wait, what? FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU"

I find it AMAZING that they didn't meet the late summer deadline.

I am thankful to finally have MMS, but I just know there will STILL be network slowdown with MMS, whatever they did to their network probably still won't be enough.

Did anyone ever pick up on why the 2G can't do MMS? I never use to send any but I get a ton from friends and it sucks that I don't even get the option of going to the website to see them anymore. Hopefully they can crack the update and just enable MMS on a 2G without third party software.

http://www.macrumors.com/images/macrumorsthreadlogo.gif (http://www.macrumors.com/iphone/2009/09/03/atandt-announces-iphone-mms-launch-date-september-25/)

http://images.macrumors.com/article/2009/09/03/143458-att-mms-press_500.png

AT&T has issued a press release (http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=1574) today announcing that MMS will become active for iPhone users on September 25.We've been working for the past several months to prepare our systems and network to ensure the best possible experience with MMS when it launches - and that launch date is: September 25 for iPhone 3G and 3GS customers. MMS will be enabled through a software update on that day.AT&T points to the need for the company to build out its network infrastructure to handle the demands of heavy MMS messaging volumes as the primary reason for the delay in launching the service compared to carriers in other countries that have offered MMS since the launch of iPhone OS 3.0 in June.

As announced (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/06/15/apple-and-atandt-preparing-for-iphone-3-0-launch/) in June, MMS messaging will be included at no additional cost to users with an iPhone text messaging plan.

There has been much speculation on the availability of MMS from AT&T, some with dubious origins (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/09/03/rumors-of-iphone-os-3-1-appearing-next-week-alongside-mms-from-atandt-based-on-questionable-sources/). Next week's Apple media event (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/31/apple-issues-invitations-for-september-9th-media-event/) had been the subject of some speculation as a possible venue for AT&T to launch MMS, which was first promised at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in June, though today's news has put all such rumors to bed.

"MMS will be enabled through a software update on that day." --Does this imply that the OS 3.1 Update will be available on Sept.25? Maybe. We will probably learn about this during Apple's Media Event. MMS is "Media."

"AT&T points to the need for the company to build out its network infrastructure to handle the demands of heavy MMS messaging volumes"
Enjoy your fast internet connection while it lasts. It will soon grind down to dial-up speed.
Apple should be introducing a word of caution to iPhone users: "it's up to you. don't send 50 billion MMS every day, or your network is going to be super slow. be responsible."

MY BROWSING SPEED IN SAFARI IS NOW GOING TO GRIND TO A SNAILS PACE BECAUSE OF ALL THE PEOPLE SENDING THOUSANDS OF MMS PHOTOS OF THEIR CATS ALL DAY LONG !!!!

Probably the only best news I've heard from AT&T in a while. But I hope it works on the 25th. Better not wait another month to have the feature kick in that would just be pointless to show this to people and get their hopes up for another month.

I don't know how many times I nagged them on Facebook & Twitter about MMS as goes with everyone else who has an iPhone. I just don't get why they had to wait this long to just change a simple WAP setting. RETARDED:D

Not really, both the 3g and 2g have the same processor. I believe it has something to do with the differences in the radios between the 3g and the 2g. This was overcome when some hackers were able to enable mms on the 2g. You can find it through Cydia (You need to jailbreak in order to get this).

Sep 3, 2009, 03:07 PM
uuuh, because it's too fuggin slow.

That's actually not the reason. Remember, even the cheapest crappy phone was able to do MMS for years, long before 3G. It has to do with the fact that (1) sending messaging on iPhone is not a full background process, (2) earlier iPhone users get "free" 200 messages and AT&T probably doesn't want those 200 to be MMS, and (3) Apple wants earlier iPhone users to upgrade.

At the very least, earlier iPhones should be capable of receiving MMS, instead of stupid SMS that opens AT&T MMS viewer website.

They're all worthless really well I hear better things with verizon so maybe go with that but all cell phone carriers are working in the same boat, pretty corrupt if you ask me.

That won't work (GSM phone on a CDMA network). The only other national US carrier is T-Mobile. Do any of the smaller carriers use GSM?

I want MMs. FWIW, peanut.

...peanut?

And yes, I realize I'm in the minority here, but I've got a phone that's getting 1/9 of what AT&T's network is theoretically capable of and 1/18 of what the phone is capable of. So you'll excuse me if I'm not thrilled that AT&T is about to introduce a service that chokes that bandwidth even further (let's see if we can get back to EDGE speeds so I can just give up and turn off the 3G entirely! that'll be fun!)

I email photos all the time and they look great. MMS is just low quality images. Why does everyone have their panties in a bunch over this ancient functionality that is out of date by 4 years?

Because a majority of my friends do not have smartphones, and occasionally send me a picture of something interesting or funny, which never makes it to my phone, nor does a notification. ViewMyMessage.com hasn't worked since I got my 3Gs, so people are sending me messages that I'm not getting and wondering why I don't respond.

Yes, but MMS is not going to replace normal web usage, it's going to supplement it. It's just added strain on an already badly strained network. Moreover, while most people think of MMS as just sending a pic you took with your phone's camera, it could be used to send other image, audio, or video files, and those are not small amounts of data.

+1

Not that it would have helped me much out west in the US. I don't know about anyone else, but the 3G/Edge data service in Las Vegas, NV was absolutely atrocious! Though voice service seemed ok, and I always had indication of strong signals, I was lucky if I could send or receive data 1/4 of the time I spent there recently on vacation.

By the way, 2 different, 3G family iPhones both exhibited the exact same awful data services out there. The phones worked fine back home here in New England. :( It seems to me AT&T has a long way to go before they can be touted as a serious data network provider.

Didnt say I agreed with him. However, I can see there being many people with this mindset, and it is somewhat justified. If they say late summer, you paid for a phone to have that by late summer, and it is not summer when it gets released, that is false advertising.

Well, in my case, I have friends who like to MMS me (because their phones do not have Internet and that's all they can do to send an image), and it's very inconvenient on the receiving end not to have MMS.

I use MMS buddy from the app store, which helps, but it's still not that great-- no fault of the developer, who I thank for stepping into the breach and who did a really good job given the situation. It's just that AT&T set up a clumsy workaround for receiving MMS images.

Haha, good to see I'm not the only one who they blamed. Got my phone and it initially had 3 bars at my house. A year later when they rolled out their 3G network it dropped to 2 bars. A few months ago it then dropped to 1/0 bars. They blamed me, Apple and my trees. Apple gave me a new phone to prove it wasn't them. I wonder if after MMS is turned on I can go to negative bars?

Everyone who is moaning over the 25th not officially being in summer needs to get a life. MMS has to be THE most useless feature ever on a cell phone, regardless of type. What in the world could be so freaking important/funny/interesting that you have to share a picture of it with all your buds? I guess you folks are excited because you can send a picture of a stop sign to your GF or BF with a cute message " couldn't stop thinking about u" or some other earth shattering bit of pap. It will be one more stupid thing for people to do whilst driving, making the road ways even safer than they are now.
Oh yeah, for all the folks who think Verizon is the best thing since sliced bread, the reason there is no iPhone for you is Apple, like the rest of the world, passed on CDMA. Years ago. When Verizon moves into the 21st century technologically, maybe they will be able to offer an iPhone. And maybe they will fix final billing from 5 years ago where they still owe me a $47.98 refund. yeah, Verizon is freakin' fabulous - NOT.

Yes but does your contract say that you will have MMS by late summer? I haven't read mine that carefully, but I seriously doubt it. What AT&T says in an ad or a keynote presentation does not become part of your contract.

If anything, this is false advertising, not a breach of contract. And even if you could prove a claim for false advertising, you're faced with the problem of proving damages. What do you think you can prove for losses based on receiving the ability to send MMS 3 days late? Because I'm thinking approximately $0.

Ugh. Not only do I not want MMS, I'm actually dreading this because I fear what it will do to AT&T's already pathetic 3G speeds (getting under 400 kbps in downtown Boston). I know they get a ton of crap for not having MMS, but network speed is about 100x more important.
Agreed. And coverage. And reliability.

Not to say that I'm not happy for MMS ( $5 / 200 messages plan is more than enough for me ) but there are other issues I want AT&T to invest in improving / fixing.

Add to that you have to prove the fact that when AT&T first said that they knew that the deadline would of gotten pushed a few days. Both which can not be proven. It is very easy to for AT&T to find 3 days worth of delays.

c) Wanting to use MMS so much?

d) Finding something to complain about - get a life. You already have an excellent phone, a provider that's pretty decent in all honesty (And as anyone who works with IT etc will know that nothing always goes to plan, things get delayed and take longer than planned)

I've seen no mention in this thread of one VERY useful thing that MMS can do: send your current GPS location to another phone. (I'm not sure how many phones can receive it in a useful way, but iPhones apparently can map it so you can find each other.)

That means no more, "I'm by the fountain with the big trees. Yes. Yes. No, wait, an arch? I don't see an arch. Yes, it's raining here, too. I'm trying! Be quiet a minute. The trees are really tall, taller than the rest. What do you mean 'arch?' I said i'm trying, if you would just listen! Look, it's not my fault you can't have kids! Great, well I don't like your mother either! There, I just threw the car keys in the fountain, happy now? This is the worst anniversary ever! Maybe I won't even TELL you when I get my test results! Good bye! Forever!"

Lol - I guess if MMS helps with these kinds of problems then it can be a good idea - hadn't thought of that either :)

Well, for once my prediction was right. I've been saying for months that AT&T will buy as much time as possible to get their 850 mHz overlay rolled out, and judging from the user reports on howardforums.com, they were making progress in the big cities (NY, LA, and SF) but still had a ways to go. That is still true, but at least lately they have made some big steps forward.

Some individuals jumped on me for this prediction, saying I had no basis, but it just made sense. It was plainly obvious that the big cities didn't yet have enough capacity for the current load, let alone MMS, so why would AT&T flip the switch until that was fixed? That would just screw people more. I'd rather have mediocre service without MMS than have MMS but no data service. What would even be the point?

This will be delayed. Around the middle of the month AT&T will come out with some BS about how they want the best experience possible for their users so they want the server ready for the billions of MMS that will be sent every minute of the day by iPhone users only. 3+ months of work for something every other carrier on the planet was ready for 3 months ago. If AT&T wants the best experience for us, they should get their S*** together and catch up with the rest of the world.

To be fair, move all those iPhone users to any OTHER single US network, and it too would begin to fail--especially the data network, but maybe MMS too, if iPhone users find the features easier and thus send more MMS messages than other people. Plus it's just a lot of people, period.

I despise AT&T, to be sure, but "every other" carrier wouldn't have been trouble-free either. Something would be bound to go wrong (in the US anyway :o ).

"AT&T said the delay was to ensure that its network could handle the extra traffic it expects." Bull S+*T, just the fact that new users that came on board from the 3GS is or impacted the "system" more than MMS will ever impact. But then again, can't be any worse than what we have now...

And "ensure an excellent experience from Day One," Call quality sucks on AT&T. Anybody remember those bogus commercials about fewest dropped calls... Hmmmm, ever wonder why we don't see those any more? hahahaha

I will believe it when I see it happen. You cant take anything AT&T says as being legit. They need to fix the problems of calls dropping. I am having 4-5 calls a day dropped. Its getting old. We pay to much for these plans to have that crappy of service.

Thank god. People will finally be able to send/receive their precious stupid videos and pics, which they have done fine without for the past 2+ years, and further clog up the already overcrowded 3G network. Telcos system being overtaxed is why there is a need for a standard issue of service, hopefully 4G for everybody would do the trick and Apple opening up the iPhone to other carriers and it's popularity regarding the owner of actually USING the service they are paying for will hopefully dissipate as the demand spreads evenly over at the other carriers. Unless, everyone is piggybacking on everyone elses infrastructure and makes my whole post mute?!

I send emails and photos via email all the time with my 1st gen iPhone over the edge network without a problem. Sure it's slow, but it is works reliably.

So why, exactly, can't MMS happen over the EDGE network? Something tells me AT&T just wants me to upgrade to the latest model of the iPhone and get me to sign a more expensive contract.

I don't quite understand why everyone is getting quite so upset about:

a) It being the end of Summer or not.

b) MMS being late

c) Wanting to use MMS so much?

d) Finding something to complain about - get a life. You already have an excellent phone, a provider that's pretty decent in all honesty (And as anyone who works with IT etc will know that nothing always goes to plan, things get delayed and take longer than planned)

If you want to send pictures so desperately use E-Mail!

Anyone else want to have a good moan?

Look mate, you are over in the UK, and mobile phone provides are a lot better there than US crap. You have MMS already, so for you to come and post on this thread is worse than people who are actually complaining about not having a service that most other iPhone service providers already have.

As for IT problems YES I agree they never go to plan, but that is no excuse.

I email photos all the time and they look great. MMS is just low quality images. Why does everyone have their panties in a bunch over this ancient functionality that is out of date by 4 years?

I've had lots of cell phones over the years. My first was back in the 1990s (it is darn big).

I've never had a phone that could do MMS. None of mine did, and none of my parents' phones did.

Last month, I got a new phone for my wife. It was her first phone that did MMS. And now, my iPhone will be able to do MMS.

So not everyone feels MMS is old. It's all new to me and my wife. My parents' phones still can't do MMS. Maybe some day.

Sending MMS seems pretty convenient. Snap a picture, send it to a friend's phone. Done.
Email? Snap a picture, open my email, send, and then send a Text to a friend telling them to check their email? Are you kidding?

the 25th.. That's good but i'm not going to nut-hug ATT. Here in jersey i get dropped calls all the time. My contract ends in November for my 5 phones on my family plan. Once it ends, i'm NOT renewing. Instead i'm waiting to see what happens.

ATT has everyone wrapped around their finger because they are the ONLY company that can have iPhone legally. Charge what they want, and do what they want with MMS, tethering, customer service, etc...

Once, and IF apple goes with other carriers, the will lead to PRICE DROP, and options. ATT will then DROP PRICES, OFFER STARS to customers because most will leave their phone service.

I'm actually thinking about going to blackberry with Verizon due to att. If it wasn't for the iPhone i would have been LONG gone. ATT promised late summer, they literally made it fall. They are irresponsible company. I can't wait for something to happen.

If it doesn't, i'll just get another phone with Verizon next year. Dropped calls are ridiculous. And it's strange how it's always on a IMPORTANT call, and not when i'm just talking about nothing.

BTW, i'm just steaming because i hear it on a daily bases. Many people HATING att but stuck to it just because of the iphone.

All you need is to put a minor change into the carrier file on the phone, no change to the OS at all, and it will be enabled. Along with tethering. Takes all of 30 seconds to change the file and then you will have the ability to do this yourself. Google is your friend.
