I was just reviewing the new iPhone's innovations. I think a lot of these iPhone innovations definetly rub off on the Ipod Touch 4G. Such as:

Camera, definetly
Maybe facetime
Multi Tasking
Better Res, maybe not HD, but better
App Folders
Ability to change your springboard
Reintroduction of 16gb storage capacity

Just Maybe:cool:

Camera? Not unless the device gets thicker. Apple doesn't like thicker.
Multitasking-guaranteed it's in 4.0
Better res? Likely
Folders- guaranteed in 4.0
Change springboard- guaranteed in 4.0
16gb seems like a step backwards.

Camera = thicker? what planet are you on? they just released the 'thinnest smartphone on the market' and that includes two cameras!
all 4.0 features not pertaining to the phone. facetime no. 16 gb yes. better res, yeah probably. really hoping for the new iphone 4 form factor though. its jsut so sleek.

I personally dont see how 16gb is a step backward, just cause they got rid of it. last year they confirmed the 3rd gen was gonna have a camera but at the last minute they got rid of it because of some mechanical failure. just based off of the iphone (http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/), thats why i said maybe to facetime, they really should have the springboard change, i mean its not that big of a deal, but it makes your ipod touch.... more you. a better res would be nice, has anybody looked at the retina display? its absolutely amazing!!!! i think the touch should have the same glass of the iphone 4, sounds ridiculous, the touch's glass is already scratch resistant enough, well i guess more protection cant hurt, :p, using the same glass that trains and helicopter use, and then stiffening and hardening it like 30x!!! with a zagg invisible shield(made of the plastic that keeps car glass from shattering), the iphones screen would be invincible. i know this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQcv3ETEQdM) doesnt prove much, cause its not dropping, but its pretty cool

The current iPod Touch is thinner than the iPhone 4. So adding a camera would mean having to expand it. Adding a camera and making it as thinner than it already is is just absurd.

Apple didn't bevel this phone. This iPod touch is severely beveled. Without an extreme redesign it simply won't fit.

I don't think that is accurate. True, the camera that is in the iPhone won't fit, but as tear downs of the iPod Touch 3G shows there is a spot for a camera just a smaller one. It was removed at the last minute due to quality issues.

They have had a year to work on it and I would be stunned if there was not a camera on the 4G Touch. Maybe it will be video only but that is ok. We want a replacement for our Flips.

i doubt the ipod touch 4g will have a camera as great as the iphone 4g (5megapixels), they added a camera to the nano and it managed to stay as slim, or at least close. i guess we'll all see when it comes out around September. :D

When is iPod touch 4th generation come out??

4DThinker
Jun 17, 2010, 10:49 AM
Expect the Touch 4 to be a total redesign that matches the iPhone 4 in detail. Apple is moving the whole line to that new look. I expect the next Nano to go there too. For what it's worth, there is already a camera in the current Nano. That should be thin enough.

Here are my thoughts.

1. The touch will see a whole new design. We had the same look for the past two years. Seeing a new design that may mock the iPhone would be idea as the frame will be the structure, like unibody. We willow no longer see the mirror backing.
2. The touch will get iOS 4.0 of course.
3. The touch will get a camera. Photo apps will sale even more with the expansion of devices.
4. Facetime will come to the touch. Steve said they will sale tens of millions of face time devices. The touch will be one of them.
5. Volume control buttons may change to the iphone styling
6. Retna display. Same pixels and resolution as the iPhone 4.
7. Orention lock
8. Possisble iPad backing?
9. 32Gb and 64GB storage. $199 and $299 respectfully
10. Possisble 3G version but highly unlikely.

I will say this as I have before. A camera is a must if they want to sell a lot. I know a lot of my friends will be upgrading from our 2Gs because we know there will be cameras. Why would people want to upgrade for only a faster processor and bigger battery? There has to be a camera. The Touch is following the way the iPhone has been upgrading.

1G- a little shakey, but the first of it's kind.
2G- change in design, and faster
3G- twice as fast as 2G
4G- the biggest leap forward

And the biggest leap for the Touch would be a camera.

-i have already adressed the absence of the mirror backing, definetly a new design
-no idea what iOs4, would someone care to define this?
-camera is an obvious addition, sales would boost so much, vs. not having a camera, not having one would be just stupid.
-facetime doesnt seem needed, but i guess its a nice addition
-possible volume control change, maybe to the iphones styling
-i dont think retina, but a better res, again it would be stupid to not have that
-oriention lock?
-definite better backing
-that would be awesome, but i doubt it-16gb/32gb/64gb-199/299/399-maybe 128gb, but i dont think sales would be high for it, maybe 149 for a 8gb, maybe.... i guess we'll all find out around September :p
hopefully earlier

Apple is done with the low end 8GB and 16GB sizes. It's all going up.

And iOS 4 is the operating system that runs on the device.

liamkp
Jun 18, 2010, 07:38 PM
well i knew that much:D, but are there any special advantages?
i can understand 8gb, but getting rid of 16gb? i dont think theyll put 32gb up for $200, and they need a low end cost item.

guess we'll all see in September

I'm thinking it's gonna get a retina display. The iPhone and the iPod Touch have the same size screen, so it's not like the iPad where putting in a retina display would require more R&D. They already have a stack of retina displays perfectly suitable for the iPod Touch sitting somewhere within Apple because of the iPhone.

And you didn't say it, but I'm thinking the 8Gb and 16Gb are still popular, at least the 16Gb. I think the big draw about the iPod Touch is that it's basically iPhone Lite, and because of that the price is also lightened. Keeping those lower amounts keep lower prices, which are a big draw. I know I plan on upgrading even if I have to get the 32Gb, but I think I'm a little different from the target consumer because I don't upgrade every year, I have a 1G, so spending the extra money for something I'll be using for years (plural, not singular) is worth it to me.

liamkp
Jun 18, 2010, 07:47 PM
i guess that makes sense, i think a retina would increase demand too.

it makes sense to rid of 8gb, but i think the 16gb would be the most popular. i dont upgrade ever year either, ive never had an ipod touch, or ipod product so... yah, its just a mp3

again we'll see in September.

ChrisGonzales90

I never upgraded to the 3rd gen touch. I owned a first gen and a second gen. The third was not a worthwhile upgrade even if it was bumped to 64GB. My first iPod ever was the fifth gen iPod classic and that came in 60GB but it was hard drive base not flash

*sigh* That website doesn't know what they are talking about.

What you're seeing there was an in-development version of the third generation iPod touch. A two megapixel camera was planned for the latest iPod touch but was pulled at the last minute, for reasons unknown.

LOL, complete FAIL!!. How could he suspect it is a photo of the iPhone 1.0 when the camera on the 1.0 was situated in the top left corner not to mention color, material and shape differences oh and that wi-fi breather don't remember seeing one of those on the iPhone 1.0.

I agree it is not the 4G if anything it is yet another 3G prototype like the one found before last years release HERE (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/14/images-of-next-generation-ipod-touch-surface/) and another recently surfaced in Vietnam HERE (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/05/19/photos-and-video-of-ipod-touch-with-camera-surface-in-vietnam/) that had a June 2009 production date.

i didn't post it anywhere else

but yeah, that would be ideal. but for some reason apple has been afraid that the ipod touch is going to become more popular than the iphone. so it seems a bit unlikely. after a few months they'll just release an iphone without the rear camera & sim slot and call it the ipod touch. or they'll released an ipod touch w/ an ipadish design & a smaller 3 mp camera in the back, at best. either way, i hope they also release an ipad mini w/ a 5mp camera in it and a 5 in diagonal retina display. i would pay money for that

I predict Apple will hold their annual iPod event on either September 7th or 8th this year. After the event I think there will be a 16GB 3rd generation model for $199, a 32GB 4th generation model for $299 and 64GB 4th generation for $399.

I think the 4th gen model will include:

A4 Processor @ 1GHz
512MB RAM
3.2MP camera w/ video recording (same as 3GS)
Microphone
3.5" Retina Display (960x640)
iOS 4 (obviously)
802.11n WiFi
Gyroscope
30% chance it has a front-facing camera to be included in the 'millions of FaceTime devices sold in 2010' but I expect that to come in the 5th gen model
New aluminum backed design (iPad-like) to continue following the iPhone's updating structure (huge design overhall with 4th gen)

16gb will likely be the baseline model. which means there will be no changes to this model from the 3rd gen 32/64gb.

gyroscope is just another potential api for developers it helps the iphone understand it's orientation to gravity.

gyroscope is just another potential api for developers it helps the iphone understand it's orientation to gravity.

Thats what i was thinking.

I still dont get it. Can someone explain to me in more depth?

I think it'll have the same screen and specs, but maybe not the same design. I'm not sure why, I just think they'll keep the old design or put them in the old 3GS cases. I hope I"m wrong though...

At first I figured they would only put a back facing camera in it, but now I'm hoping they only put a front facing one in it!!! :)

Jun 23, 2010, 04:51 PM
Well, if they keep the old design just so the previous gen cases fit, then theyll have to have a camera on the front so that they dont have to have a hole in the back of the case. But i still think its more sensible to have it on the back so you can see what youre filming.

What would a gyroscope do for the ipod touch?

it is sort of like the accelerometer. the accelerometer only worked on one axis. the gyro works on 3 axes. the x,y,and the z axis. so, it just provides more options to the devs to implement cool stuff.

maybe, in light of the mac mini getting an sd slot.. for some crazy reason they put an sd slot in the next ipod touch. how insane would that be? with up to 32 gb upgradability they could sell tons of 4gb models, and still have really good sales for the 8-64 range. maybe steve should consider competing with recent products such as this AirStash SD wifi hotspot thing (http://www.airstash.com/), in addition to offering a model with both cameras that the iphone 4 has. that could even give current ipad/iphone owners a good reason to get an ipod touch. maybe apple is finally coming around to SD? it's already in some mbp's & the new mac mini. maybe they'll add it to the macbook & mba somehow too.

apple could make a ton of money if they made the ipod touch 4 built to order with a ton of features they could over charge you with.. the possible price range would be like 249-699 USD or something. if they let me, i'd order the 64GB ipod touch w/ SDXC slot, both cameras, 3G, and double (maybe triple) sized battery. This would probably cost about 599 to 699 if it were to be made available in september by my guess. & even though it would be about 3-5 millimeters thicker than your average ipod touch.. it'd be totally worth it

edit:

also, if they went with the same design as the iphone 4 they could build a really nice sd slot into one of the sides. where about an SD cards width of the whole metal casing can be popped & unlocked, and then opened to reveal the sd slot. or even a double sd slot on thicker models. pardon my french but i think apple needs to let sd penetrate more of its products. sd is obvioviously widely accepted & used. if apple and sd were best friends, i think the world would be a bit of a better place.

Although a sd card slot would be nice but it would cannabalize upper memory storage models. Apple cant satisfy everybody... can they?

Things like sd card slots are tangential to the focus of the device. The focuses of the ipod touch are music, video, and games. Apple will not include features that are so disconnected from the device's purpose.

In light of the focus of the ipod touch, we may be able to reason about some of the things it will or will not have in the next revision (just my guesses...):

- retina display? yes (games and video consumption. I think people would be outraged not to get this)
- 512MB ram? yes (games and multitasking for iOS4)
- A4? yes. probably set to the same speed as the iphone, whatever that is. with the retina display, it will need to be faster at decoding video and generating graphics for games.
- gyroscope? yes (games)
- maybe 720p tv output? i dunno (this could make sense from the video consumption perspective.)
- rear camera? maybe? probably? to create media in addition to consuming it? Seems they've been planning it for a while, and already have it in the nanos.
- front camera? i dunno, could be. I feel like Apple might try to keep out the communications functionality and reserve that for the iphone, but some comments i've read seem to say that jobs has implied that more devices should support facetime in the near future.
- 3G internet? definitely not, especially if there is a front facing camera. I think that would invite people to stop getting cellular plans, and just communicate with facetime.
- I think a dock connector to VGA capability would be pretty sweet. I wouldn't expect it, though.
- i dunno about capacity. if the 64GB chips coming out in Q4 are cheap enough, i don't see why apple wouldn't go to a 32/64/128 lineup, or maybe 32/64/96 or something like that.
- price might go up by $50 for each price point due to the retina display, A4, and 512MB RAM.

Of course, I'm completely speculating here.

As far as making it lighter or thinner or what the buttons are going to be and where, I don't really care. IMO, give me a huge battery rather than making it thinner and lighter and i'll be happier.

I certainly could be wrong. I've probably missed some things that an ipod touch owner would care about. I don't actually own one yet. I'm just researching it thinking about getting one after the next update.

first off, design seems to follow to trend. when iphone 3G was redesigned, ipod touch was changed, too. in this time, I think that new ipod touch 4G will have new design just like iphone 4. camera? yes. it should be fit into new design. retina display? yes. multi task? of course. facetime is only purposed when you have constant connectivity like cellphone. so ipod touch won't have forever. I don't mind if new one will be little thicker. why? it will be still thinner (more grabbing feeling). just like iphone 4, new one will have A4 processor with 512MB memory to run enough for multi tasking. better battery life? maybe. just wait for this Fall.

I doubt there will be a camera.
Apple wants there to be a significant difference between the Iphone and the Ipod Touch other than the phone part and 3g network. If the ipod touch has a camera the only difference between the two devices is the phone and 3g network. I personally would like to see a camera and be wrong because im not going to get an Iphone because I use Verizon (if the iphone came to verizon my life would be complete :)

For sure the next generation iPod touch will play music, video, and podcast...

What happened to the music? Haha the nano, and video should be retired within the next years and apple should make one single music, entertainment, PDA device ranging from like $99-$199

I honestly would like if they upgraded to iPhone 4-like specs with the ram, processor, display, etc, and made it a design either more like the iPhone or the first gen touch. The current touches are too thin for my liking, just feels awkward to hold, while I much prefer the feel of my first gen, plus the black aluminum bezel looks much cleaner. Plus if they did that, there would be more room for a bigger battery, which I would most certainly approve of. I could care less about the camera, since I wouldn't really use it. But I think they should reinstate the 16 gig model as the base, and keep the 32 and 64 where they are. I think a 128 gig would be prohibitively expensive at this point, but the 8 is just too darn small. I thought it would be enough for me, and was all i really had the budget for at the time, but I can only fit about 70% of my music, my apps, and 2 short movies or 1 long one and a couple tv shows.

Although a sd card slot would be nice but it would cannabalize upper memory storage models. Apple cant satisfy everybody... can they?

not necessarily. for instance apple could choose to limit this feature to the upper storage models. but even if they included the sd slot in the all the models, including the baseline 8gb for 299 or whatever.. there would still be people out there who would want the 64gb just so they can have over a total of 96 or 128 gb's after they pop in that memory card. they aren't going to buy the 8 gb model instead, because a 128gb SD either doesn't exist, wouldn't be fast enough, or too damn expensive.

also if this is going to have a high res screen, people are going to want to watch high res movies. which take up a lot of space. what's easier than getting out that usb cord to sync your ipod touch with your computer to watch a movie? sync via wifi. what's faster than that? dragging the movie to an sd card, and putting the card in your ipod touch. I think the ipod touch 4 should be able to do both. at a friends house and want to show them the movie? tell them to connect to the wifi hotspot you just turned on & stream the movie over wifi while your phone charges. or take the sd card out and stick it in their computer.

want to send out or upload some pictures you JUST took on your dslr or point and shoot camera? take out the sd card and put it in your ipod touch. find a wifi hotspot or hope apple makes a 3g version. apple needs to make various versions of the ipod touch at different price points. such as, all get sd slots & frontal face time camera. 8gb 299, 16gb 349, 32gb 399, 64gb 449
add the rear camera of the iphone 4 for $39.
add 3g for $39.

this would allow for many different price points that would please a wide range of customers while still adding a ton of competition to all the other personal media players on the market.

the ipad has 3g. why not? apple is already a huge company. is stock going to plumit if one of apples products starts selling better than one of apples other products? i dont think so. they sell tons of computers, iphones, and ipads as it is! god forbid the ipod touch see record sales!

Things like sd card slots are tangential to the focus of the device. The focuses of the ipod touch are music, video, and games. Apple will not include features that are so disconnected from the device's purpose.

what are sd cards for? do you know? i know it's not music, video, or games even.. maybe just pictures? uhhhhh

I was just at Best Buy this afternoon and a sales associate told me that Apple is not planning on an upgrade to the iPod Touch until a year from now, September 2011. He says it will have a camera and up to 90 GB of memory. Has anyone else heard this rumor? I was willing to wait until this September to buy an iPod Touch, but probably won't if the upgrade is, indeed not coming until next September.

Do you think this associate really knows for sure? Any confirmation or accurate info would be greatly appreciated.

it makes sense to rid of 8gb, but i think the 16gb would be the most popular. i dont upgrade ever year either, ive never had an ipod touch, or ipod product so... yah, its just a mp3

again we'll see in September.
Why get rid of the 8gb? People get the 8gd to save money for a heck of a awesome device. If they end up getting rid of the 8gb, then apple needs to make an itouch 4 that's the same price and the 8gb.

My two bits sent from a 2nd gen 8gb itouch.

Exactly. If they released it next year that means they would miss out on a Christmas which would devastate sales, because most parents that would buy 4G's if they came out, probably have kids that already have 3G's so they wouldn't buy them. Personally, I think they're gonna replace 8gb with 16gb for the same price, but if they have 32, 16 and 8gb models then what would become of the pricing?

Camera? Not unless the device gets thicker. Apple doesn't like thicker.
Multitasking-guaranteed it's in 4.0
Better res? Likely
Folders- guaranteed in 4.0
Change springboard- guaranteed in 4.0
16gb seems like a step backwards.

I don't see the iTouch getting thicker. They fit two cameras into the iPhone 4. They can fit one into a slimmer design.
I will scream if they don't give us multitasking, folders, and the springboard customization. Sometimes Apple makes stupid mistakes, and that might be one of them. But it is VERY likely.
Better res is guaranteed. They say its a gaming device - this makes it a better gaming device.

How is 16gbs a step backwards?

Camera = thicker? what planet are you on? they just released the 'thinnest smartphone on the market' and that includes two cameras!
all 4.0 features not pertaining to the phone. facetime no. 16 gb yes. better res, yeah probably. really hoping for the new iphone 4 form factor though. its jsut so sleek.

+1

Facetime might be likely though. On another thread someone pointed out that Mr. Jobs said (and I quote) "facetime devices". That might say that iMac, iTouch, and iPad just might be getting facetime. Possible, but maybe not possible. Not everyone has an iPhone 4. :)

+1
The current iPod Touch is thinner than the iPhone 4. So adding a camera would mean having to expand it. Adding a camera and making it as thinner than it already is is just absurd.
I personally want them to make the iTouch wider. It is just too thin for my taste. Plus the iPhone 4 has TWO cameras, and as stated is the thinnest phone on the market.

Remember that there was a camera on the iPod Touch but it was ditched just before release. So, it fit. The empty space for the camera is still there, in today's iPod Touches. Probably not the same 5 Mpx autofocus camera as the iPhone, but maybe a basic one like in the 3G or something.

I'm sure it will fully support iOS 4.0, this one is obvious, so multitasking, and everything else is obvious. Even the newest iPod Touch does that.

Better resolution... Maybe... It would make sense since most apps are now being converted for the retina display, it would be stupid to have to keep a lower resolution version just for the iPod Touch, though high-res could be backwards compatible and this might not be an issue.

Springboard: wtf is that?

16 GB? Why not? Doesn't the current iPod Touch come in 16 GB? And 8GB?

I know, the camera was confirmed, everybody says it wasnt, well, not everybody but alot.

It probably will come with it pre-installed.

Yah, alot of people are betting on a retina display which would be nice!

A springboard is your homescreens wallpaper, before iOS4, unless it was jailbroken your ipod touch's springboard had to be black.

No, the current one is 8/32/64. Just cause they were stupid enough to not include 16gb on the 3rd gen doesnt mean its a step backwards. I think they should include the 16gb model in their lineup for the same price as the 8gb now. Whether or not they still include the 8gb is unknown, even though everything is but still. Heres the lineup and pricing that i think is going to happen: 16/32/64/96-199/299/399/449. I think 128 is ridiculous.

Since the college back to school deal is to get rid of the stock of older gen ipod touch's to make room for new ones, and it ends on the first week of September, wouldnt that make it most likely to be the release date for the new ipod touch?

May be YOU dont need that much space, but with us with very large music collections and apps. Plus movies and TV shows it would come in handy. Most arnt like you. Most dont want to choose and decide what to put on there. They want everything on at all times and not have to worry about "oh I'm going on a road trip and I really want the series finale of LOST, but I also want this movie.... urh" no.

I have a very large music collection, about 2TB of ripped movies/tv shows, as well as another 5K photos. I bought the 64GB thinking why sacrifice? I want it all with me as much as possible....right?

Not really. The fact of the matter is that 64GB is still very small compared to what I would want to put on it in order to have a 'complete' library of my stuff. We're a long way off in terms of flash storage to handle what I have, and mine is probably very small compared to many others.

So let's start with music. I put my whole collection on, and really found myself not listening to music much on my iPad. Maybe in the background is nice from time to time, but I'm usually watching a movie/TV show on the couch while I surf, and rarely dawns on me to crank up some music on the less than stellar speakers. This is iPod Touch territory 100% in terms of portability..why pay for the extra storage on an iPad and just buy an iPod Touch??

Let's go to movies. Like I said, I have 2TB's of ripped movies, which I'm never going to get all on the iPad anyway, so I will have to make a choice whether my iPad is the largest or smallest. Aside from that, there is always the 'Air Sharing HD' app that allows me to stream all of my movies from my PC, wifi, or if on the road, 3G. So, the only time that I can think of aside from that where I might need lots of entertaining movies, is a long >5 hour plane ride. In that case, surely I can pick 5 movies that will keep me entertained.

Finally, if we are talking about apps, they are so conveniently small, that you can fit quite a few without taking up too much space. I currently have about 100 apps, 10-15 of which I might use on a regular basis.

The moral of the story is that I sold my 64GB 3G ipad (for a profit actually), saved a couple hundred, and went with the 16GB 3G iPad. My eyes were bigger than my plate to speak initially, but to each his/her own.

There is alot of reasoning and patterns to the iPod line. I will be posting a video on youtube in the end of July posting the final thoughts on the coming iPods on September 2010. But here's one thought to why my video will be the most accurate information. Some wonder if there's going to be a 16gb. From the data I collected, the answer is No..Why? If you Notice the iPhone and iPod touch have similar patterns, when the iPhone design changes; iPhone 3G, so does the iPod touch; iPod touch 2nd Gen, when all the iPhone get is bumped up specs; iPhone 3GS, so does the iPod touch; iPod touch 3rd gen.
So if you noticed that when Apple released the iPhone 3GS, 16gb for $199 on fathers day, the 8gb iPhone 3G dropped to $99, When the iPhone 4 was released the iPhone 3GS 8gb dropped to $99. If you noticed when the price was dropped on the older model these models were in stock, they did not create a new model with the new specs and a lower price point. So in the 2009 iPod touch line up the 8gb iPod touch model was actually a 2nd Generation.
Because in 2009 the lowest gb on a 3rd Gen model is 32gb, Apple has only has 2 options for the 2010 Lineup.

They could to keep the 3rd gen 32gb Model and also sell a 4th gen 64gb 128gb-Which I do no think will happen-Or Just have two 4th gen models; a 32gb and a 64gb iPod touch.

This is my reasoning, if you would like to see my video, visit my channel in the end of July, for the 2010 iPod line up

If they're going to have 32gb as their baseline at the same price then theyre gonna lose some serious business. I still think the 16gb is going to come.

Any hopes of a 6" iPod Touch? I want something bigger but something smaller than the iPad which is too conspicuous and pretentious to pull out when taking public transportation.

This is almost the perfect "fieldwork" computer, where you can do most of your research: take photos, shoot archival video, temporary notes till you get home; voice recorder for interviews. Just a bigger screen would make typing a little easier.

0% chance. The iPad isn't that big and is a perfect size upgrade from the iPhone/Touch. I agree a 6" would be cool but doesn't necessarily make sense business-wise for Apple to invest in. This is one of those rare times that I wish other manufacturers could use Apple's OSes so we could get some variety.

4. Facetime will come to the touch. Steve said they will sale tens of millions of face time devices. The touch will be one of them.

How is this going to work on the iPod Touch? Right now, Facetime is only available when making calls from the iPhone 4. The Touch has no ability to make or receive calls. The only way this will be possible is for Apple to broaden the use of Facetime by creating a mobile iChat app for iOS 4 and allowing Facetime to be used with that app.

Outrun1986
Jun 27, 2010, 07:03 PM
I have no idea how facetime would work on an iPod touch, but Steve did say they will ship tens of millions of facetime DEVICES this year (as other posters have mentioned), which I assume means that by the end of the year, other apple devices will get facetime. Unless Steve was lying or they plan on just shipping tens of millions of iPhone 4's by the end of the year which seems unlikely. I don't even think they could manufacture them that fast. My point is some other Apple device other than the iPhone will likely be getting facetime by the end of the year.

The only thing I really care about getting in the iPod touch is a still camera, I would prefer still over video, but if it had video then I would consider that a big bonus. Again, the requirement to get me to buy it is a camera. I do not have any sort of iPod yet, but I am very hesitant to buy it without a camera (regardless of what happens this september) because I just want a camera on the touch that badly.

The touch would sell like hotcakes if they did release one with a camera, I think pretty much everyone I know would upgrade, and probably hoards of other people, which would be tons of sales for Apple. Basically this would make every touch owner salivate with jealousy over it. Its pretty much a sure way to get touch owners to upgrade and to get more sales out of current touch owners that are satisfied with their devices.

I don't think this would even impact iPhone sales because I feel now like the iPhone is another whole segment of apple, as in if people want the iPhone they are gonna buy the iPhone and nothing else, they won't even look at the other products. People who want the iPhone 4 have already bought it or have plans to buy it very shortly, they do not care about waiting for September to see what is gonna happen with the touch.

I think the sales potential of a touch with a camera is absolutely huge, and way too huge for apple to ignore.

The stores here already seem to be emptying the iPod cases just like I saw last year around summertime, its clear that retail at least here will not be stocking any more of the current line other than current stock. The display units are gone from some stores already too with just empty holders in place now.

But why? The iPad comes in two versions, 3G and no 3G. The iPod should come the same way.. the iPhone being the 3G version. I don't get why Apple wants to offer a crippled device. Cameras - please please please. It will definitely get a back camera. I just hope it isn't some crap 2mp phone camera.

Because it is A-GPS (Assisted GPS). The GPS assists in finding your location based on nearby wifi signals and cellular towers. From what I have read... 1. this is method saves on power consumption and 2. speeds up the devices ability to locate you. Apple is not the only one using A-GPS, many smart phones do.. here is a brief list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_devices_with_Assisted_GPS)

So in shorter terms it's most likely not going to have GPS unless there's a 3G version.

I really think they should reintroduce the 16gb for the price of 8gb now, 8gb is kinda sad, this will almost definitely happen if they have a higher gb's model other than the 64gb, either that or 32gb for 199. Which would be awsome, they would get so many more customers.

Well let's look at the last 3 years of iPhone iPod touch they have never really shared the same specs hears my honest list of what I belive apple will do with the iPod touch:
no A4 to much space to much power
retina display in your dreams
rear facing camera are you guys still on about the camera you lot say it every year it ain't gonna happen
no new design the iPhone 4's design wood look awful if it was any thinner plus the volume controls will be to big to allow the iPod to be as thin as it is now
front facing camera is likely but that will be the only camera
cromatic backs likely
64gb max probably
no more ram
this is the year that the iPods and the iPhones are going to be diversified
so get over it the iPod touch will never be anyway near as good as the iPhone for one major reason apple wants you to buy the more expensive product. Either lump it or buy an iPhone 4

I think we can safely say death to the 8GB touch this time around, the line will either start at 16GB or 32GB, however they may keep the current 8GB and reduce the price to $149 or $99. I cannot see Apple making a new gen 8GB though.

Excuse me, but you're an idiot. There has to be two cameras. Everyones saying they confirmed it last year, and at the lat minute scratched the idea, so there's no way there is a camera tHis year. If anything, the fact that they didn't have it cast year makes it absolutely definite this year.

The iPod touch is for kids mostly, and no kids are buying it for a front facing camera genius. When his Jobs-ness announced FaceTime, he said 10 million FaceTime devices by the end of the year. That says the touch will have cameras, front and back. And to power all this new stuff, including all the new features of iOS 4, they need an A4 chip

ljwiphone
Jun 28, 2010, 01:43 PM
They Ditched it last year supposely because it wasn't capable of being produced so it ain't gonna happen it's to thin to have both and a front camera is the better option the iPod camera story last year was only about one camera. And if they were to put a camera on the back it would not be a 5 megapixle camera probably a 2 megapixle or maybe a 3 A4 why would apple put it in they have no reason to the iPhone must be ahead of the iPod and retina display that is the new major feature for the iPhone they only put one feature from the next gen iPhone into the next gen iPod , iPhone 3g -iPod 2g new design, iPhone 3gs - iPod 3rd gen faster proccesor, iPhone 4 - iPod 4th gen facetime
oh on the matter of ur comment about the iPod touch not having a camera last year meaining it will have one this year that's what they said before the 3rd gen was released and before the second gen was released yeh it's either facetime or apple A4 retina display no chance that's iPhone 4s and it will be for along time
on the design front I think it will look like the ipad not the iPhone because they are more of a similar product. The iPhone is fundamentaly a phone the iPod is a PDA and the ipad is a giant PDA and maybe that design would allow the iPod to be thicker but not make it look fat

oh finally if the iPhone 4 is packed how the heck are they gonna fit the same specs in the ipod touch

the best out come
2/3 megapixle camera back
video calling
ipad like design
64gb hardrive
same 600 MHz processor
but that's looking at the size ,past history ,clever marketing

As I said in my previous posting, he was giving me this information with such conviction, he, at least, is convinced this is the truth.

Thanks to all of you for helping me decide to wait until Sept to see what happens.

I'd be surprised if they don't release it in September or sooner. It's kinda a tradition, and, as mentioned before, that's when the college deal ends.

There's a 100% chance of a new iPod touch in Sept of 2010. Not even Apple employees would have that kind of inside information. Don't be fooled by his "conviction" and don't even take his advice with a grain of salt. Just don't listen to him at all. If you need some evidence, it's that the iPod touch (albeit the 8gb 2g) is being heavily promoted with the Back to School promo, meaning they're clearing stock. I assume the 3g iPod touch will continue to be sold alongside the 4g, much like the iPhone and the current iPod Touch offerings.

I'm pretty sure that new iPod touch will has retina display and integrated camera + A4 chip. As you may know, the iOS4 works great with A4, so Job has to integrate it into new iPod touch. I think the differentiate of technical spec between new gen iPod touch and iPhone 4 is RAM capacity (iPhone4 = 512 and iTouch = 256).

IMO, they should definitely make an iPod Touch with the A4 + 5mp/720p rear camera + front camera.

It doesn't need to be on every model. They can keep the 3rd gen iPod touch as the $199 model (maybe with a capacity cut to 16gb), then have the 4th gen iPod touch with the iPhone 4 goodies at the higher price points.

Not my intention of turning this into an iPhone discussion but...

I had a similar conversation with some kid at Verizon. He overheard me talking about the iPhone (about month or so ago) and was kind of obnoxiously saying, "You won't see the iPhone on Verizon until at least 2013. It's confirmed pal." To which I played it off and didn't wanna stir up any rough waters in there, but OBVIOUSLY even if there WOULD be a Verizon iPhone (in the near or not-so near future), they want to sell the Android and Blackberry since that's the product they have now and they want you to believe that they're not getting the iPhone for a while so you'll cave and get an Android and they'll make money.

Hence a similar situation with BB trying to sell you what they have now...2nd and 3rd gen iPod Touches.

Same thing happened with the iPhone...we all knew the new iPhone was coming out, so they lowered the prices and made you able to buy one with a contract for the massive price tag.......in regards to the phone, it's like my boss' "party in the stomach" routine. So I have an iPod touch 3G. Do you guys think the usual "sell right before the update" will apply? So many people seem to be uninformed about the September update, so I'm guessing I could get $220-$250 for my 32GB.

I must have the iPhone's display. At least to hold me over until a Verizon iPhone.

with the months/weeks/days getting hotter, I am trying to rely less and less on my laptop and more on my iPod Touch as my go to device for news, email, and entertainment.. using it more has got me feeling that the one thing that I would love most is the new screen.. I can deal without a camera, internal mic etc.. a new screen would be the way to go since the new apps for iOS4 are designed for it.. I say the screen has to be the one thing that is a definite and I bet we will see the same screen in the iPad as well.

I'd also like to see someone design a fan that could be attached to the doc connector.

I haven't followed the current trends but you might want to sell that ipod RIGHT NOW for maximum value, the only other good time to sell it presumably if you are using ebay or some other online selling website would be right before Christmas. Again I haven't followed pricing trends for Ipods, you could get more during Xmas than before the update possibly, if you absolutely have to keep your iPod until you get the next one then you might want to hold off till the holiday season to sell the old one. Just don't sell right after the new one comes out, that will be the worst time.

For electronics in general, I have found you can get more on ebay during the holiday season than any other time, lots of people will still buy the old version of whatever you are selling for whatever reason they have. I usually hold off on selling things until the holiday season especially if they are current things.

I think for pretty much every store and product they are gonna tell you a new one is not gonna come out or a release will be delayed if it is a confirmed release date just to make a sale right then and there. Its up to the consumer to be informed at this point, if you are gonna drop $200 or $300 on a product I would hope you are informed about what you are buying.

I agree, its a 100% chance that some sort of new iPod touch will be released in September with the yearly iPod announcement.

I was just reviewing the new iPhone's innovations. I think a lot of these iPhone innovations definetly rub off on the Ipod Touch 4G. Such as:

Camera, definetly
Maybe facetime
Multi Tasking
Better Res, maybe not HD, but better
App Folders
Ability to change your springboard
Reintroduction of 16gb storage capacity

Just Maybe:cool:

Definitely No camera and no facetime.
Seriously enough of "Is the ipod gonna get a camera" People have been asking that since before the release of the 2nd Gen Ipod touch, and guess what.. it never got one. And it wont this next release either.

Its a lot cheaper now to add a camera than it was in 2008. It would be very beneficial for apple to add a camera to the touch, even if it is just a rear facing one. It would make more apps work like barcode scanning, and it would increase sales by a ton since pretty much everyone who already owns a touch would go out and buy a new one (especially if people have been asking for a camera since 2008).

No one knows if it will get a camera or not, heck I do not know for sure and no one else does, so you definitely cannot count it out for sure until the official annoucement is made.

 No one corrected this? Facetime is not dependent on "making calls." It is a WiFi-based connection. I mean I have a 2G iPod Touch right now and make calls all the time via Skype through my WiFi network at home.

On

an

iPod

Touch. (Not an iPhone)

So, aside from the larger question regarding the inclusion of a front facing camera (I guess that remains to be seen), incorporating Facetime would otherwise be a no-brainer for the next gen. iPod Touch. Again, Facetime is WiFi, not 3G.

You have misinterpreted what he said. Right now, on an iPhone 4, to make a facetime call one goes to the phone app, makes a call, and taps the FaceTime button. There is no phone app on the ipod touch. How would apple add facetime then? they would have to broaden things up a bit, perhaps add in an iChat app, or else have a dedicated FaceTime app.

iPod nano has a camera and it is more purely an mp3 player than the touch. The touch really is not primarily an mp3 player. It has that function, but is much more a multifunctional device. It should be renamed the iTouch.

The problem is that without the camera, there isn't a compelling enough reason to upgrade to iPod touch 4th gen from previous generations. iPod is still one of the major product lines. It is one of the three legs of Apple (Mac, iPod, iPhone) and needs to be kept fresh and new. Without the camera, I would just stick with my current 2nd gen iTouch.

No it wasnt.

Of course that's not true, I make and receive calls all the time on my current, humble, 8 gigger IPT. But, I get the idea. Still, it would take relatively very, very little effort to bridge facetime via a "phone app" such as Skype, right? :o

ofcourse it will have A4 and the same amount of ram (every ipod touch is faster than the iphone made in the same year, so it will be the same this year). Camera is definitely going to be there. and maybe retina (i think they should do this because if they don't put a retina in the ipod, it will divide the community even more and that is not something apple wants).

My opinion...

The iPod Touch 4 will be exactly the same as the iPhone 4 except:

It won't be a phone
It won't have GPS
It will remain with a 64 GB top end
And it will likely not have a front camera (Facetime, while wi-fi only still requires that you to be in a call to initiate it)
It may be slightly thinner

There is no reason to differentiate anything else as it would only segment the App Store even further.

To me, it all comes down to the Facetime capability.......

I have never owned a Ipod Touch - I've been looking at (and drooling over) them for 2 months now and I was all set to get the 3rd Generation 64GB version. Then the Iphone 4 came out with the Facetime feature and I decided to hold off and wait for the Ipod Touch 4th Generation to come out this September.

My decision is pretty easy - if the new Ipod Touch version has the Facetime feature, I'm getting the 4th generation unit. If it does not, then I will be picking up the 3rd generation unit (probably at a reduced price once the 4th generation unit comes out).

I think the new unit will definitely have the newer/upgraded display that the Iphone 4 has as well as the gyroscope. Those two features were just made for video and gaming....... which is what the Ipod Touch is all about. If somebody wants a MP3 player, they could save a bit of money and just get a Nano, I think the Touch is becoming more of a mobile computer / multimedia device.

Please, or please, Mr. Jobs - please give me the Facetime feature in the new Ipod Touch!!!!!!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't this be accomplished with Skype?

The thing that I keep going back to on why the Touch will have Facetime is because of what Steve Jobs said at WWDC - that there will be tens of millions of Facetime devices by the end of the year.

There is no way that they can produce and sell "tens of millions" of iphones by the end of the year........ so the Facetime application/feature has to be coming out in other devices this year - so far, to me anyways, that means the Ipod Touch (cross-fingers)

Considering that historically the iPod Touch has trailed the iPhones functionality year to year, I would assume that the front facing camera will not be part of the package.

The iPod Touch is moving more toward a games machine than a communication device. Right now, the singular purpose for the front facing camera is FaceTime. If there are app developers out there that can turn it into something more (facial recognition secure login, MS Kinect-like entertainment) I, personally, do not see a need for this functionality.

Once Apple introduces FaceTime functionality into an iChat update on OS X (which I believe will happen once they figure out how to establish the connection between a phone and a PC), there will be "tens of millions of Facetime devices"

As for Skype, I am beginning to believe that Apple would rather push FaceTime over Skype, to strengthen their market position and to establish the FaceTime set of protocols as the "standard".

You can kinda tell that it's fake: you can just tell the ipod part on the black one is fake, there's a color difference where the speaker was and on the backing of the white one, the "camera" on the white one is not a circle, and it's on the wrong side, just fyi.

Now, i think it's going to get facetime; Jobs said that "millions of facetime devices would be shipped", so unless he was lying that most likely means the ipod touch, it would be a great addition especially because it operates through wi-fi.

Because the iPod and the iphone had the same SoC Pcb, without the gsm chip of course. Naturally it would require apple to do less work because they wouldnt have to build a new pcb from the ground up. Much easier to just modify the current one.

Apple will not add a camera to the touch.

That's what I thought as well, but John Gruber (of DaringFireball.net fame) said that you can initiate a FaceTime call over a data connection without ever initiating a voice call. If you go into your Contacts, each one has a button for FaceTime near the bottom, and if you press it, it will try to start a session without ever dialing a number.

Now, I have no idea what information the iPhone is using to find the person on the other end, so I can't speculate on how this would work with a new iPod Touch or iPad. My only guess is that Apple will introduce a mobile version of iChat if they do equip the iPod Touch with a front camera.

This is what I keep coming back to as well, I don't think its possible to manufacture tens of millions of iPhone 4's by the end of the year (and if they could do that, then they could probably sell them), but the thing is they said DEVICES, which means facetime will be coming to other apple devices. Heck it could come to iPod touch, MacBook and iPad in the future. They definitely didn't say facetime is exclusive to the iPhone.

I do think if they bring facetime to the touch, that they will have to have both cameras because facetime also uses the back camera to show your surroundings or to have others say hello. I would be satisfied with a rear only camera that can take pictures but facetime would be a huge bonus and would pretty much solidify my purchase of a touch.

If they have a solution for facetime on other devices I am sure they have been working on it since before they announced the iPhone 4 which means they probably already have something planned for the other devices, unless Jobs is lying. I would be willing to pay more for a great iPod touch that has facetime and a rear facing camera that can take pictures and shoot video as well, vs one that doesn't have those features. Those who want to pay less for an iPod touch could buy one of the current models that will no doubt get a price cut or be completely phased out in September. I can see them keeping at least one budget touch model for those that don't care about the extra features like they do now with the 8GB 2nd gen touch and then having a slightly higher priced line with more features.

I don't mind waiting because it gives me more time to save up money for this purchase (my birthday is in October).

Like it's been said, the iphone 4 16gb unsubsidized is $600, I doubt we will see a $400 64gb ipod touch with all the iphone 4 bells and whistles-

My guestimate:

Main Selling Features for new model
-1 vga camera at best
-A4 processor
-gyroscope.

What it won't have
-facetime
-HD camera w flash
-512mb ram (they'll give it 256mb like ipad)
-Retina display(perhaps it will have it on the most expensive model but not across the line)

If they change the design I could see it looking like a small ipad, not so much like the phone though, I wouldn't expect glass on the back.

Like it's been said, the iphone 4 16gb unsubsidized is $600, I doubt we will see a $400 64gb ipod touch with all the iphone 4 bells and whistles-

Ummm....how do you figure that????

iPhone 3gs prices ('09 Unsubsidized) - $599 / $699
Touch 3g prices - (32gb) $299 / (64gb) $399

???

As far as cameras, I am betting on rear-facing. It will at worst be the same as the iPhone 3GS. VGA camera no way - that is too crappy and would just mean another component to deal with without that much cost benefit. It would be nice if it were the same camera as iPhone 4, but probably won't be.

The low end $199 is almost guaranteed to be 16GB iPod touch 3rd gen. Just as iPhone 3GS still exists as the low end iPhone, the 3rd gen iPod touch will still exist as the low end option. Because 3GS and the 3MP camera still exists, that camera will likely go into the iPod touch 4.

That's my reasoning anyway.

RW: If they did that, I can guarantee at least two sales: Me (in Japan) and my father (PA). Love Skype, but that MacBook is getting heavy!

So, maybe Facetime will (or, does?) emulate the Skype contact list model: you and your contacts would establish FaceTime monikers. They'll automatically add to your contacts. Then, you'd initiate a FaceTime connection by touching a FaceTime user online.

BTW: I thought I understood (from a Skype chatroom) that Apple is opening up FaceTime architecture to Skype...

Big fear:
Now: iPad plus iPod Touch 2/3G: No FaceTime (obviously)
Next: iPod Touch 4G: No FaceTime
Next: iPad 2G: FaceTime added
Next: THEN iPod Touch 5G gets FaceTime...
See how that thinking works... Drives sales of next gen iPads and then sales of iPod Touch 5G.

Sez la vie. Hope I'm wrong and they introduce FaceTime to iPod Touch 4 G and next gen iPad... One can dream.

All the more reason why I think the iPod Touch needs to be put on the same upgrade schedule as either the iPhone or the iPad.. that way people can make better decisions as to what to buy. If the iPad and iPod both updated at the same time then I think sales overall would be better.. I have no evidence to back that up.

Of course, one of the bells and whistles we will never see on a Touch is a phone. I am still wondering if we are getting our hopes too high for an updated iPod Touch this September. Has the resources at Apple been been spread too thin to come up with a major upgrade, with the iPad and the new iPhone? I hope not, but throwing that out there for consideration.

It's actually better to have a front facing camera. I mean, it'd be nice to have a back facing for pictures you can actually see, but Apple is only putting one camera on this thing, and there's no way in Hell they're selling 10 million iPhone's by the end of this year unless that price drops like pants without a belt. But, it's either gonna be 2MP or 3.2MP, so don't get your hopes up for 5MP with flash. VGA would make me NOT buy it.

Apple is really pushing the Facetime thing, but nobody can use it, because at the moment both people must have an iPhone to Facetime. Apple must have a plan for making Facetime a real selling point, and the only way to do this is if there are actually enough people with Facetime devices.

This is why I think the next touch will have Facetime (i.e. front camera), because this would add many more opportunities to use Facetime, plus it would be a huge selling point. People who wouldn't buy the iPhone would be really tempted to get the touch just for Facetime. At least, I would be tempted...

Last, of the two cameras, the front lower resolution camera would be cheaper to add on. But i think it would be nice of them to put both :)

I just don't know why Apple would bother pushing Facetime for iPod touch. The iPhone is a communications device, such that such a feature would be a big selling point. The iPod touch is not a communications device. It is for fun & games. A rear camera for taking pictures videos falls right in line with that.

Front camera and Facetime starts to encroach more into iPhone's communications market segment.

Considering the iPod touch does everything an iPhone can do besides make calls with AT&T, it's foolish to say it isn't a communications device. Just because Apple markets it as a gaming device doesn't mean they want to make a gaming device. Apple doesn't make it a gaming device, the apps do. They market it that way because that's what studies have shown are popular on the device. The iPod Touch has apps to make phone calls without AT&T (skype, fring). The design and purpose behind the iPod Touch will remain in line with the iPhone. It won't veer off into a unique gaming device category just because it is marketed as one.

With that said, I would much rather have an HD camera than a Facetime front facing camera (if we can't have both). I would use a regular camera for taking pictures/videos far more than I would use it for video-chatting.

I'm pretty sure the phone and GPS and whatever else the iPhone has that iPod Touch doenst helps in the cost of the iPhone. It most definitely would be stupid not to release it in September because, as mention before, they would miss a Christmas which is a HUGE selling point.

I guess, but like everyone's saying, he promised 10's of million FaceTime devices. Also, giving it to touch would broaden the limited horizon of FT users. No one's gonna be thinking "OH HEY, leme go buy a 300/600 dollar iPhone and call one of my friends on FaceTime!" if they have a 200 dollar touch that could do the same, ultimately resulting in MORE money made. Or, Apple could just be Apple and leave us with a cheap back camera, no camera at all, or make a whole new device in the Apple line (iFace or some crap) and sell THAT accompanied with the iPhone.

It is able to communicate, but that is not its primary function. I am speaking of market segment, which Apple is pretty clear on. There are now four legs to Apple: Mac (PC), iPhone (smart phone), iPod (mp3 and fun) and iPad (tablet). iPod touch is in the iPod category, which is for fun. I argue that its purpose is in line the iPod fun category, although you are right its design is more like an iPhone. What I am saying is not the touch veering into a new category, but remaining in the category it is in.

I could be wrong - they might include Facetime, but I think product segmentation suggests a rear camera comes before the front camera. Steve Jobs comment about Facetime does suggest the latter. We'll just have to see.

I'm in the same camp as you - I'd rather have the HD rear camera from iPhone 4, but I expect it will be the iPhone 3GS camera. The HD rear camera would make a killer iPod touch, but Apple always cuts back on features seemingly purely for product differentiation.

Considering the iPod touch does everything an iPhone can do besides make calls with AT&T, it's foolish to say it isn't a communications device. I can't see this happening, because with Skype, Vonage, and Fring, plus 3G access, the iPod Touch becomes a telephone that makes Apple far less money each month than an iPhone. I don't think they care as much about the iPad having 3G access because no one's going to hold an iPad up to their head to make a call. But it would be unwise for Apple to allow the Touch to function as a phone when not on a Wi-Fi network.

Perhaps you're right, but I just have a hunch they'll add 3G capability. If you're able to make Skype/Vonage/Fring calls over wifi, is it that much of a difference adding 3G into the mix (and charging a data plan for all those new users)?

And don't you think most iPhone users want to keep their regular and reliable voice plans? I think it's a small crowd who would switch to VoiP calls only. Hmm, it would make for an interesting poll here on MacRumors.

The iPad isn't so bad for making calls. One way I do it is put on headphones and then speak into the top of the device (where the microphone is). It's not so awkward that way, but yes you wouldn't want to walk around all day making calls on it.

$199 - 16GB 3rd Generation
$299 - 32GB 4th Generation
$399 - 64GB 4th Generation

4th Generation will include (IMHO):

Either a new iPad-like aluminum-backed design or the same polished steel design
Retina Display (960x640)
A4 Processor
512MB RAM
802.11n WiFi
Gyroscope
3.2MP back-facing camera w/ video recording (same as 3GS)

meh, I won't lie, I would much rather have the extra memory than the new gadgetry. 8 gigs is a bit small, and I don't even have all my stuff on it, and I think the jump from 8 to 32 gigs is kinda ridiculous. I would use no where near that much, but i'm afraid that if i get the 8gb i'll surpass it somehow. Even though i'll probably only have like 2gbs of music ON THERE. Naaaa all of the new hardware (Retina Display, camera, etc.) would cost too much to put it in the $199 model. And 8GB is too low of a capacity when flash storage is so cheap now. I think they'll keep their current example by having a last-generation model in the $199 place w/ 16GBs. We'll see.

I don't know about that. But it's Apple. Anythings possible.

That would be hilarious seeing someone walking around a store or something with the iPad to their ear like a cell phone. :D Not to be mean or anything.

This thread has been going for over two weeks. There seem to be more recent threads that might be more deserving to be closed. A thread with this identical title was already closed earlier today.

Anyways, we need another poll: What is the name gonna be? A. Ipod Touch 4 B. Ipad Mini C. Itouch D. IpodHD

I vote B. Ipad Mini

We'll see.

Well, actually, technology companies everywhere have priced the whole iPhone 4 and its hardware at a little under $150, with the most expensive piece being the retina display for $28.50. It's just the typical "pay less, price more" mindset. So if they priced a 4th gen 8/16GB iPod touch at $229 like it used to be, they'd still make 70 dollars a pop, not to mention the 32 ($299) and 64GB ($399) models that people are more favorable of. Also, the only reason Apple put a 2nd gen at the baseline of 3rd gen is cause they look the same.

alright, some of u guys are being somewhat idiotic.

first of all (and yes we have this argument every year after the iphone is announced and the ipod is about to be refreshed) history and logic dictate;

The ipod will never have all of the features of the iphone without the phone bit. FULL STOP (not unless they charge £500 for it)

the design will become standardised across the line (ipods) the iphone will remain with a design of its own, this reaffirms that it is unique and an industry leader (as opposed to an ipod touch with a phone chip in it)

the camera will focus on entertainment instead of quality and functionality- expect the iphone 3gs camera chips. no forward facing camera, no 720p video.

RE; Retina display, for me, as the screens will already be there for apple to use, maybe. but this could go either way.

no GPS no Compass maybe Gyro.

as for the 16GB (r u crazy) how would that fit into a pricing lineup - would you pay the same for half the memory with slightly better features or create a new size range.
the memory capacities will stay the same this year, 32 and 64 the higher capacity chips are still too expensive.

remember guys, just because you want to have the iphone 4 without a chip really cheap. dont mean yer gonna get it.

ok thats me, apologies for spelling and grammar.

I would use no where near that much, but i'm afraid that if i get the 8gb i'll surpass it somehow. Even though i'll probably only have like 2gbs of music ON THERE. I'll probably have a gb of video AT MOST. And then im afraid that apps will take up the rest but i doubt they will. I dont think my apps will take up like 4gb worth of space.

I thought the same thing when I got an 8gb 2nd gen. 940 songs, and 116 apps later, I have 634mb left on it.

I recently bought a 32gb 3rd gen off Woot.com for $234, and couldn't be happier.

I will most likely by the 4th gen if it has a camera, but not until Feb (tax return season! LOL

Seriously, who would close this? It's the most popular thread on this subject and this is the first thread SPECIFICALLY about the ipod touch 4G. There's one about when its going to get a camera, but thats it.

I don't like negative comments.
16gb for $149. It's as simple as that.
