Why not just use Thunderbolt for everything now?
For the same reason apple dumped FireWire in favor of USB 2. Thunderbolt is still in its infancy USB 2/3 is more common among macs and pc's

As long as parts are being made in a factory that they don't have 100% control over, things can and will leak.
