I dont understand who can possible defend Apple in this scratch thing, if it really turns out to be true. Its not tolerable that a 750$ smartphone that Apple praises like its the best iPhone ever, who focus on the keynote the precise manufacter process and always enphantize the quality of its products is now releasing their top selling product with a problem like this. C´mon.....its 750$!!!!

Exactly. I agree. The overhead of profit that Apple take and then try and sell something as if it was handbuilt by one person is a joke.
It's like anything built in China now, mass produced by over-worked, under-paid employees.

Such meticulous attention given to design and form only for the device to be a scratch/scuff magnet.

Really expect from Apple given their unwavering attention to detail.

Add to this the half baked maps app and they're pretty under cooked (under Cook).

They've dropped the ball here some what. Disappointing!!!

What was a no brainer upgrade for me is now no longer so clear cut.

I agree. I'd also advise you to stay away from the black iPhone 5 for now if you're worried about the scuffs. Like I posted above.. I had read this thread and have been very, very careful (much more so than one could reasonably expect from a user I think) but still have some scuffs on the edges already.

I now always go with white for the iPhone and iPad. It show up far fewer fingerprints too. Got my iPhone 5 this morning, man this thing is light!

Bummer. I think I will stick with my perfect jailbroken un-locked white 4s until apple gets this fixed. I have a feeling this new iPhone 5 design is going to be a major fail.

It's the way the phone is manufactured. There is no way to fix this.
It's also something to think about if you sell your phone to subsidise your next iphone purchase.
You should seriously consider the white version if this will annoy you as the phone will just get worse.
This is Apples problem, they try to sell something as being so high-end with prices to match and their devices are no better than any other mass-produced item.

i'll stick with the black for a few weeks and see how the scuffs actually look. If they don't look horrible, I can deal with it...if not, white it may be.

+1 white 4S Jailbroken for me

I don't think I'll be tempted to get a 5 anytime soon until a jailbreak comes out for it. And Apple can't just simple fix this. They'll just let it be like this. Maybe in 5S Apple will use a different painting process

Yeah same here I think. I only have 14 days to return it though (laws in my country). I was planning on getting a case for it anyway so I may just let it slip but I'm not impressed with :apple: this time round.

and I have applecare+, so when I go to sell the phone I will just pay $50 and get a new one and leave it in the box.....so i'm not worried about the scuffs affecting my resell.

Are you sure it won't be an issue on the white one?

It will be an issue with the white one as well but it won't show as bad. That's why I ordered the white one for the first time since iPhone1, it actually looks great.

I tried my best to find out what type of anodizing the iphone5 has but found no info and apple has mentioned nothing except that its Anadized, Anadized means nothing to me unless they tell us what TYPE of anodizing it is.

One other bonus in buying the white one is I feel like I bought a new phone, previously it's been black black black

I still think the black iPhone looks better but don't regret getting a white one for the above reasons

we should have a separate thread where people post pics of their black iphones so we can see how the scuffs vary.

Post the scuffs on your black iPhone 5

Since this is getting quite serious I wanted to see some photos from people with a new black iPhone 5 to see how the scuffs vary and if this is mainstream or just a few of these.

Anyway, I (and many others) would appreciate if you could post some photos of you're phone.

Thanks

Can't do a pick at the moment but mine has a very small mark on the black outer band top right rear near camera.
