If you mean the line below the Safari window, it separates the windows that are minimized and those that aren't. The four windows below it are minimized at the time, and the Safari window isn't.

Here's my hackintosh desktop. The network volumes all point to my Windows Home Server box.
I keep a copy of my MP3s and Photos on my MacBook Pro so I can have those with me anywhere I go.
