You mean vendor lock-in. I like my iPhone 4, but there are other phones out there I like a lot more. But I can barely use them because I work on a Mac, my contacts are in Address Book, my appointments in iCal and my music in iTunes. The _only_ phone that syncs properly with all of them is the iPhone. If syncing was not an issue, I would have a WP7.5 phone any day of the week over my iPhone. And I still might, if SyncMate gets updated to support WP7.5.
Well, there're two sides of everything 🙂 "Lock-in" is a bit strong. As you suggested, 3rd party apps like syncmate and airsync are alternatives. Sure, they don't work "out of the box", but they do work to some degree.
It is true that I gave up on my SGS 2 after one month of trying to get those alternatives to work as well as what Apple gave us "out of the box". At the end, I chose to take the easy route and bought a 4s, and I can change my mind anytime in the future if I see something I like in ICS.
