Upgrade to Galaxy S2 Skyrocket from iPhone 4?

Well, there're two sides of everything 🙂 "Lock-in" is a bit strong. As you suggested, 3rd party apps like syncmate and airsync are alternatives. Sure, they don't work "out of the box", but they do work to some degree.

It is true that I gave up on my SGS 2 after one month of trying to get those alternatives to work as well as what Apple gave us "out of the box". At the end, I chose to take the easy route and bought a 4s, and I can change my mind anytime in the future if I see something I like in ICS.

That's actually one thing that apple does well, syncing. with a skyrocket for example you can easily sync music/contacts but if you had a full crash it would be more difficult to restore (with an iphone you just DFU then use itunes) - with android you need to jump through hoops and download 3rd party, find the software (unofficial), etc etc.

other things apple has down that android doesn't is their camera, MMS, and VPN.

Respectfully... the statement made here is from the voice of inexperience, and one who does not understand how Android works.

The above statement is FALSE. A very common problem among those who expect Android to be like iOS.

iOS is a very unique, and very good OS proprietary to Apple. Android is a very unique and very good OS from Google licensed to handset makers.

If you understand and agree that Apples desktop OS = OS X is different than Windows desktop OS = Windows 7, then you need to apply that same line of thinking to the iOS vs Android comparison. They are two completely different mobile operating systems.

A complete crash of Android (which is quite rare unless one is modifying the phone without the skill to do so) is very easy to recover from. I know, I have years of experience with Android. I been using iOS and Android phones since the very day each were introduced. I enjoy them _both_ and there is a lot to celebrate about each of these mobile smartphones.

Please try and refrain from spreading untruths about any platform, based on guesswork or a desire to bash that which you do not like.

ok..... lets try this...how do you backup your apps and app data/preferences? email accounts? text messages ? without titanium etc?

I use a Mac, and prior to my Nexus S 4G I used a BlackBerry. I've used Gmail, its contacts, and Google Calendar for years, even back in the dark BlackBerry days with Google Sync.

While I prefer the Google web interfaces to the Apple apps, you can use Apple Mail, iCal, and Address Book synced with Google. The Google apps are all better than iCloud as well, in my opinion.

In fact, for anyone who already uses Gmail, etc., I'd highly recommend Android. The Gmail app, calendars, and contacts are synced in real time and it's quite nice.

As you seem to be the biggest or at least the most vocal Android user on these forums, can you tell me how do I sync and backup all my music and metadata(covers, lyrics) from my computer? That seems to be the biggest the biggest weakness compared to android. I haven't found anything that works well including doubletwist and winamp.
 
I think 4g is only necessary to download apps and watch videos. Depending how reliable and rate, it can replace home internet as well. Right now, even if you are in the 4g area, I would not do android. Unless, you are not invested in apps already, you could try, but why? Next iPhone and iPad will definitely have LTE. I would just wait for iPad 3 and use it on the road. 🙂

Disagree. The only advantage the nitro will have other the skyrocket is higher res screen. Besides that, the nitro has an A8 processor, while it's no slouch it certainly isn't cutting edge, it has that terrible LG overlay, and worst of all.....IT'S AN LG phone (that alone is enough for me to not touch it with a flagpole). LG's track record on high end phones is subpar at best. I couldn't in good conscience ever recommend a LG phone to anybody.

Recommending a LG phone to him was very mean of you, you need to apologize to him j/k lol

I am a kid but i had to research all of the details on these two phones and found out that you can get the GS2 skyrocket for the same price as the iphone 4s and the skyrocket has better software inside. First you get a removeable battery and up to a 32gb sd card. There is gorrila glass which is clear and scratch resistant. In the iphone 4 and 4s you get 512mb of ram amd in the skyrocket you get 784mb of ram. There is a better 1.5GHz dual core processor in the skyrocket as in the iphone 4 and 4s there is a 1.2GHz dual core. You can have from 2g to 4g lte which is the fastest 4g although AT&T does not have lte coverage everywhere. There are more costomiseable features about the skyrocket as well

Hey kid, I had both phones and went back to my iphone 4. The reasons below:


1) Poor battery life. Barely made it 6 hours before it was dead using it the same as my iphone at work.
2) Bluetooth problems. Disconnected from devices and wouldn't reconnect till you reboot the phone.
3) Cheaply built. Plastic and it flexed.

Now I owned the RAZR Maxx for 3 months before I went back to AT&T and it was a MUCH better phone over the Skyrocket by a long shot.
